XBMC 12 Frodo – Beta 2 Now with Android!

Posted By: Nathan Betzen on Dec 02, 2012 in Site News

We are excited to announce Beta 2 of XBMC 12 today, as it brings with it many fixes and one long awaited major update. As you know, XBMC currently supports OSX, Linux, Windows, iOS, and the ARM-based Raspberry Pi. That’s a great list, but anyone paying attention could tell you that a massive, critical platform is still missing. Well, Scott Davilla and Cory Fields (theuni) have been working tirelessly to bring one more platform to the fold. And we’re all excited to say that we are finally ready to release the very first beta of XBMC for Android.

To run this beta, you will need a fairly modern Android phone, tablet, or other device. We have determined that any Android device that doesn’t include the NEON extension is simply going to run too slowly to be useable. If you are uncertain whether your device is supported, feel free to visit the XBMC for Android compatibility list.

Alternatively, you can simply install the XBMC for Android apk. If your device is not supported, XBMC will post a warning when you try to launch the app and exit out. If it is, and it isn’t included on the compatibility list, feel free to add it.

One Android issue worth mentioning: at present XBMC is likely to load fairly slowly on the first run as it unpacks itself. This is expected behavior. After first run, it should load quite a bit faster.

Update 2: Users should be aware that an update to Android 4.2 appears to have temporarily broken XBMC support for all you Nexus and Cyanogenmod users (and anyone else running 4.2). Beta3 should be right around the corner, and we hope to have a fix in place by the time that rolls out.

Controller Support

Without a doubt, one of the most popular controllers for PC at present is the Xbox 360 Controller. It is invariably the most supported controller for all AAA title Windows games (along with numerous games being ported for Steam for Linux), so it was undoubtedly time for the controller to become fully plug and play compatible with XBMC. Thanks to the work of Shiretoko212, rowan.border, and all those who contributed in this thread, the previously outdated 360 keymap has been updated and dramatically improved so that now almost any 360 controller, regardless of version, should be immediately recognized by XBMC assuming a driver is in place. For those interested in using their 360 controller to control XBMC, check out this 360 button map to show what all the buttons do in XBMC.

Audio Fixes

Easily the number one reported issue with Beta1 was a lack of sound in Windows. This issue was relatively simply resolved by switching from WASAPI to DirectSound as the default output. Users who prefer WASAPI can still easily switch back in System->Audio Output.

Other Fixes

Needless to say, there were numerous other fixes, including fixes to nodes and smartplaylists, the volume range of Airtunes in Windows, a speedup of EPG data importing, solving a minor files issue, and others. To see all the changes, feel free to refer to the Beta2 Git Changelog. Additionally, there are several other issues still being worked on, and more will likely crop up during Beta testing. If you would like to report an issue, please search for the issue in our forums first and report any verified bugs in Trac.

Conclusion

But enough of all that. Now is the time to get to downloading.

Let us know what you think of the changes in the comments below, or, if you like, via the donation button at the top of the page.

And if you have any problems, don’t hesitate to post about them in our forums and report verified bugs in Trac.

Great job, team! Can’t wait to test Android.

  • David Dec 02, 2012

Can anyone comment on whether the Nexus Q will run XBMC? I see that the Galaxy Nexus appears to be fully compatible, and since they share hardware components, I would assume the same to be true for the Q.

  • Cal Dec 02, 2012

Where do I find the .apk for Android? I checked the download page, but see no mention of it.

    Thanks,
    Cal.

  • Cal Dec 02, 2012

Oh, and you guys are *%%$’n awesome!!

    Thanks,

  • Cal Dec 02, 2012

I must have just hit the page as you were posting it. I see it’s up now.

    Thanks so much,
    Cal.

  • ICDeadPpl Dec 02, 2012

I can’t seem to find a download link for the Android version. Browsing to “http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/android” and clicking the .apk file gives the following error:
    “Forbidden
You don’t have permission to access /releases/android/xbmc-12.–Frodo_beta2-armeabi-v7a.apk on this server.”

  • tomaszg Dec 02, 2012

It would be nice to have a source tarball this time :)

  • ken Dec 02, 2012

Does this version of xbmc android include hardware decoding support for various chipsets? if so, is this achieved by addressing an external player with hardware support or is it done natively in xbmc?

Thx for the great work! I have been a long time fan of xbmc.

  • ken Dec 02, 2012

    @ken
oh nevermind :) took a look at the list.

  • DejaVu Dec 02, 2012

Waited very patiently for, what feels like years for this.

Awesome work once again to the entire XBMC Dev team. Incredible work as always.

  • Android interest Dec 02, 2012

Is there an official location for the Android APK?

  • Dan Dec 02, 2012

Download page only has beta 1 stuff…

  • tomaszg Dec 02, 2012

I’m getting a Forbidden You don’t have permission to access /releases/android/xbmc-12.–Frodo_beta2-armeabi-v7a.apk on this server error with the .apk

Thanks again for everything you guys do.

    Cal.

  • necrosis Dec 02, 2012

Um… why is the OSX version defaulting to AirPlay as the Audio Output now?

  • shaw Dec 02, 2012

You don’t have permission to access /releases/android/xbmc-12.–Frodo_beta2-armeabi-v7a.apk on this server.

  • umOuch[XBMCHUB] Dec 02, 2012

this is fantastic news!!! I am so excited to play with this… alas, like a few others, I am forbidden from getting the XBMC.APK. Is this the same APK available over at the picosforums? Also, @ken did you find the answer for hardware acceleration? I am assuming it is not included but…

P.S. Thanks Team XBMC for all the hard work. It is not fair that my living room is so awesome @ no charge… time to donate!

  • Hao Dec 02, 2012

Right now, the apk download link in download page has a typo, should be http://mirrors.xbmc.org/releases/android/xbmc-12.0-Frodo_beta2-armeabi-v7a.apk

    “12.0″, not “12.-” .

  • XBMC ANDROID Dec 02, 2012

Great job, about to get testing on several devices in a few minutes, will let you know my remarks. Keep up the great work!

  • Thurbs Dec 02, 2012

    Thanks,
Love the Android version other than my fingers are too big.

  • HwyXingFrog Dec 02, 2012

Umm, is there still an issue on running XBMC on Android 4.2? Just tried it on my Nexus 7, and it force closes.

  • Mikey Dec 02, 2012

Well this is annoying. The xbmcbuntu folks always have to wait. I’m not sure why everything can’t be released all at once.

  • EVILTHE_TURTLE Dec 02, 2012

It would be great if I could run it.

Stuck with Eden on a PowerMac G5.

  • John Dec 03, 2012

Any idea when Xbmcbuntu beta 2 will be released?

  • Xan Dec 03, 2012

Great job, one question about 360 controller, I was using it with older XBMC on W7 but there was one major bug.
Moment the controller would go to sleep mode , XBMC was crashing. I hope it is fixed now ?

  • Ectholian Dec 03, 2012

I am currently running from the wsnipex repro. But I am wondering, since XBMC is supporting XVBA also (?), what are the advantages of the wsnipex repro?

  • Martin Dec 03, 2012

Tegra 2 unsupported :( Looks like I have to buy new tablet..

  • Memphiz Dec 03, 2012

    @necrosis
Just redo the audio settings. They were screwed in beta1 and were not saved in the right way.

  • Fredrik Dec 03, 2012

Great to see Android supported :)

Now, start working on a WINDOWS 8 APP, for both x86 and ARM! 40 million copies sold as of last week…

  • Alex Dec 03, 2012

Awesome! I have Android 4.2 and still doesn’t work, but I’m sure it will be fixed soon. Can’t wait to have it working on my OUYA (when they begin selling it to “normal” users).

    Good work!

    aLeX

  • Axachi Dec 03, 2012

Hmm tride the betas on my galaxy note. No sound at all, there is only one option in the system audio. Android audio…

Please fix. It worked with the xda ver…
But lags, is there hardware acl. In this build for sammys?

  • zag Dec 03, 2012

    Download should be fixed now.

    Works fine On windows 8

People who still have problems with audio in windows, make sure your amp is switched onto the correct input when XBMC loads. DDamian is looking for solutions to this in the future but I doubt it will make it into the final release.

  • Martin Dec 03, 2012

Any chance that H.264 videos will get hardware acceleration on non-NEON devices? Alternatively, that their URLs could be passed along to a player on Android that does support hardware acceleration on these platforms? Then I would be super happy :)
XBMC on the Nexus 7 looks gorgeous, but as you say, video playback is not really usable in the current state with no NEON…

  • NineT9 Dec 03, 2012

    yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • AstroHawk Dec 03, 2012

    Fantastic.

Even in beta this release has more functionality than anything else on android

if you release through the play store I will Buy it, for now accept my donation. Its time we all put a few days dollars towards contributing towards arguably the best open source software on the market.

I have installed and can confirm on

    Asus Transformer Prime 4.1.1
Galaxy Nexus on 4.1 but not on 4.21 (as the devs have already said)

  • JMax Dec 03, 2012

    To fix XBMC on 4.2,
“A temporary solution to get XBMC working on Android 4.2 is to compile it with the gcc 4.4.3 toolchain, rather than the default 4.6″

Great news! works good on my Galaxy SIII. but is there any good skin to use? confluence is a little small touch areas and the touched skin seems to have the wrong AR.

  • wsnipex Dec 03, 2012

    @Mikey
    you just need to:
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

  • wsnipex Dec 03, 2012

    @Ectholian
Mainline XBMC does not support Xvba

  • Deco Dec 03, 2012

@martin AFAIK nexus 7 IS a neon device

  • Andrew Dec 03, 2012

I had an alpha build of XBMC running JUST FINE on my TF101. So, to be clear, when I try to install this, it’s going to refuse to run on it now? Seriously?

  • calev Dec 03, 2012

Love the xbox 360 controller feature. Its amazing how much fast it is to navigate than with a harmony remote. Now if i could only get the chatpad driver to work.

  • tienlequoc Dec 03, 2012

I’ve tried running XBMC beta 2 on the platform Rockchip 3066(MiniX neo G4), XBMC still can not run 720p video smoothly.

  • Dan Dec 03, 2012

@arvid Try Joggler it’s in the WIP skins sub forum.

  • vali Dec 03, 2012

Windows 7 with Frodo beta 1……… frame rate is 17 – 22 and even on xvid movies and audio has a little lag when is set to full screen on second monitor at 1080p :(
    anyway…….i love XBMC :)

  • Andrew McMillan Dec 03, 2012

Confirmed working on my Onda vi10 Elite :D

Works great, although is struggling with some HD video.Still great to have as an app :D :D :D

  • Cybertimber2009 Dec 03, 2012

Huzzah! XBMC runs on the Nook Color with CM10!

  • Xaviorffviii Dec 03, 2012

    Works Verizon Galaxy Note 2.
Chokes the fps badly on 1080p video playback streaming over wifi from my xbmcbuntu htpc hdd though. Beautiful with streaming 480 resolution. Will try 1080p from sd card later. Going to check streaming 720p now. The note 2 is only 720 resolution anyway so not a big I problem if 1080 isn’t smooth.

    I WANT IT ON NEXUS 7 v 4.2.1

  • WeezulDK Dec 03, 2012

I’m happy to see this, it works on my Samsung Note, but my A500 is Tegra2 so it refuses to run… I’m disappointed that there isn’t support for Tegra2 as this pretty much wipes out any hope on the first generation of the *really nice* tablets… I’m kind of torqued that it works on a cheap ass 71 dollar android rockchip stick but not my 300+ dollar tablet.

XVBA support hasn’t been merged into the master branch of XBMC’s code, so you’ll still want to use the Wsnipex repo. Also, Wsnipex is our new official repo manager, so you can trust his XVBA repo to be as good as official, more or less.

UI is pretty quick on my Galaxy Tab 2 7″ but video is playing at about 4fps from both network and local storage. Audio plays fine. Turning on ‘sync playback to screen’ makes it a little better but still not watchable.

Where do I find the debug log on the android device? Will post it on the forums once I can find it. Hopefully it may help.

    Great work as always devs

  • Olivier Dec 04, 2012

Hi, I’ve just install the package on a Acer Iconia Tab A510.
Everything seems to be ok, except for hw decoding (no HD yet …)
The bug I seen is with the official XBMC remote app : it works a few minutes, and after a while become crazy and freeze the whole app.

  • Blaxxor Dec 04, 2012

Is there anything that needs to be done if you upgrade from Eden to Frodo using SQL server?

I read some time ago that in Frodo the cachefiles would be saved into SQL aswell. Was that a rumor or does that work today?

Works on HTC Desire S. A bit choppy when watching a “real” movie (“Pirates”). Not choppy when watching a cartoon (“Winnie The Pooh”). I’m using 802.11g and wondering if 802.11n would remove the choppiness..

  • Paco Dec 04, 2012

    @thy91
Same here in my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3110 device). No configuration can make any video watchable. 480p x264 or XviD is slow, like 4fps. 720p x264 is more like a (slow!) slide show, totally unusable and UI lags a lot too. But the UI in menus and such is very usable and responsive, although the animations play a little slow. It is very stable, never hung on me even when trying some unplayable files, but without hardware aceleration has no practical use.

  • Jack Black Dec 04, 2012

Can you guys please fix/add stylus support for final release? Stylus support seems to work right of the bat on most apps even apps much older than the Galaxy Note 1, so I guess there’s something in the way you guys implemented touch support that’s different.
Thanks anyways though, I’m so happy to be able to use xmbc on the go with my phone :]

To install on my apple tv I had to first remove the package (apt-get remove org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2) and then install it again (apt-get install org.xbmc.xbmc-atv2), of course doing apt-get update before. Simply doing update and then install did not upgrade the package. Come to think of it, I probably should have done apt-get upgrade. Oh well.

  • Anonymous Dec 05, 2012

I updated and now I cant play my 1080p HD movies smoothly, so i have reverted back to eden, its a pitty cause there are some really good additions to frodo. Is it known to not play movies smoothly? I have my own HTPC built by myself. It has a quadcore processor and Nvidia GT630 video card and 8gb ram. I played these movies of an external HDD.

I have installed on Transformer Prime T201 (4.1.1) and have found the GUI to be very smooth. Local 420p movies will play at 24fps. CPU averages during playback as follows:- CPU0 70%, CPU1 25%, CPU2 0% & CPU3 0%, dcpu, acpu and vcpu all 0%. I will test more later today streaming from my NAS. All looks and works great though. Well done Dev Team.

  • sharkcohen Dec 05, 2012

no workie on galaxy tab 10.1 damn :(

  • doogdeb Dec 06, 2012

I’m still having issues with audio when it first starts up. When I try and play a TV episode I have no audio, until I do a reboot and then its fine. This is happening with Beta 1 & 2.

  • joe Dec 06, 2012

Works well but video streaming is really slow.

  • Zeke Dec 06, 2012

The Windows version seems a LOT better than Beta 1, which on my machine (Acer Revo) was practically unusable. I’m a big fan of the way XBMC is going, faster with improvements to almost all features and some interesting new ones.

  • Jesse Dec 07, 2012

When, if ever, can we expect to see a port that is compatible with the Vizio Co-Star? I have a few of them and would love to start using XBMC instead of Plex or GTVBox.

  • pk Dec 07, 2012

crashes on start on my sony google tv NSZ-GS7

  • Luka Korivica Dec 12, 2012

Nice that we have it finaly, thanks!
But… Weather is only in fahrenheits? Why? And side meny is impossible to access on touchscreen, so big screen tablets are crippled… I expected some problems with library, access to network files and so, but basic functionality…well, hope for better.

  • ben101 Dec 12, 2012

    Please fix KARAOKE always crushing…thanks

  • Zeus Dec 13, 2012

Can I use this on my xios pixos as opposed to flashing it to Linux?

  • Jonny Carlberg Dec 13, 2012

XBMC is developing fast, sad that they are not put so much effort in making skins, the community are not doing anything and it has been the same skins for couple of years now, one big reason i am not using XBMC

  • Quash Dec 14, 2012

Ok. Yesterday I checked work XBMC on Android 4.0 on this device from DealExtreme – http://dx.com/p/ak802-mini-android-4-0-network-media-player-w-wi-fi-hdmi-tf-usb-black-4gb-1gb-ddr-iii-143431
It is great, but I see render bugs – lines on the screen, and all screen updating after different actions.
Second is a crashing somtimes – i see only one frame and can’t do anything – don’t know why, maybe this is hardware…
All great, hope final version will good work on my device too! ;)

  • Zeus Dec 14, 2012

Hey Jonny; What else are you using instead of XBMC?

  • Anonymous Dec 15, 2012

    @Last Boy Scout
I`ve gotten it to work, you need about 100mb free space in DATA for the install, then another 50mb+ for the setup. Also I installed the chainfire 3D driver since the last time I tried. Not sure if it`s making the difference.

  • ChinookPiroh Dec 15, 2012

Just letting everybody know I have it working on the Xperia Play, latest OS release from sony. Chainfire 3D driver also installed, not sure if it makes the difference or not.
I had to free up a ton of space in data to make it work, about 100mb for the install, another 50mb+ for the initial cache.

Point is it works, but it’d be great if we could install to the sd card.
Speaking of. Xperia Play + XBMC + 64GB microsd = WIN!
