Kodi 14.0 “Helix” alpha 4

Posted By: Martijn on Oct 03, 2014 in Pre-Release

Kodi 14, which we gave the codename “Helix“, is slowly heading towards beta status. In this possibly last alpha release, we continue to focus on stability and user friendliness. Around 117 pull-request (code changes) have been added past month in a variety of areas. There aren’t many additions that could be picked out as a real “features’. However we will highlight some of the main visual changes so far.

Replace Touch skin with re-Touched

This change only really affects iOS and Android enabled devices. re-Touched isn’t really a brand new skin as it has been available in Gotham repo as well. re-Touched is actually a slightly redesigned Touch skin with a different home screen layout and various tweaks in some areas. However we felt like we had to replace it with a more fresh and easier skin. PVR is still not included, as such you will need a different skin should you wish to use it.

Moving userdata for Windows users

As a result of the name change, we are also forced to make some code changes. This has resulted in the fact that you personal userdata folder will be moved to a new location. This will either be done at install time or initial run. This just means the location of the files that hold your library and settings will be moved. No data will be lost during this transition. After you have installed Kodi and run it, you shouldn’t even notice a thing and you can continue using it as always. For now only the Windows platforms has this incorporated with the following steps

If User installs into a dir were kodi is already installed ask if he wants to overwrite it.
a. if user says “yes” – un-install former installation and install new
b. if user says “no” – he stays at the folder selection page and can re-decide

If user installs into a different directory
a. He said no on 1.b – kodi will just be installed in the different directory
b. He selected the new directory initally without hitting the question in 1. – check if there is a kodi installation in another directory – if so – ask user if he wants us to un-install it. If no – kodi will be installed side by side

At the end of installation check for an old XBMC installation
a. if found – ask if the user wants us to un-install it
a1 if user said “yes” – un-install old XBMC installation and move the userdata – inform the user about the moved data
a2 if user said “no” – keep the old XBMC installation and DON’T move the userdata – inform the user about the fact that kodi will use the default profile data.

portable data is not touched at all

Other platforms still need further testing to make this transition as smooth as possible. We will of course keep you up to date when this happens.

Other changes in this release

  • * support for sub-channels in PVR
  • * update sqlite which brings some improved library speed
  • * add support for DSD audio
  • * add mouse support in Bluray menus
  • * add support for EGL/GLESv2 when using X11
  • * 4K playback on Android using AMLcodec
  • * support for the Freescale i.MX6 SystemOnChip
  • * improvements for DXVA video playback on Windows platform

As for this Helix release, so far there have only been small things changed in regards to add-ons. So we are happy to say that almost all add-ons that worked in Gotham, will also work in Helix. There are of course some exceptions, however this should be only be a minimal amount.

Creating a skins for Kodi takes many months of designing, coding, testing, tweaking and a lot of patience to get it just right. However with every major Kodi (past XBMC) release there is the problem of skins becoming incompatible due to various code changes. So for every release people who put a lot of effort creating these skins, need to adapt it for the next Kodi version. This could mean that your favourite skin doesn’t work in the next Kodi version. We are very glad to say, that thanks to a group of skin developers, there are already 2 Helix compatible skins available in our repository. From memory this has never happened before, that within the alpha stage there are already skins available for you to enjoy using. On our forum there are several more skins being worked on, to get these into shape for people to use. So hopefully by the time of final release, there will be several more available. So let’s all thank the developers for their hard work they do for the community.

Helix compatible skins in our repository at the moment are: Aeon Nox 5, Transparency!, Conq, Nebula, Black Glass Nova.
As of this release all other skins that have not been updated, will become incompatible.

Should want to download and install this alpha (monthly) build please visit our download page. You will notice that you can still see “XBMC” in certain areas as we are still in transition to the new name, which takes time.

Get involved

Getting involved is quite easy. Simply take the plunge and start using these 14.0 Helix builds. If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after if asked submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support in our Forums where you can, or donate to the XBMC Foundation if you like. For a current FAQ on Kodi 14, visit our Helix FAQ. You can of course also foll0w or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.

http://xbmc.org or http://kodi.tv is the only official place anything XBMC/Kodi related. This includes news, announcements, information or XBMC/Kodi downloads. There are of course manufacturers who also provide support with customized XBMC/Kodi versions, tailored for their devices. Should you have purchased from them it would be wise to first check, if it’s a known issue with that specific version. Any other third-party websites, offering you XBMC/Kodi installations, or people offering you pre-installed devices, are not officially supported by Team XBMC and may contain unwanted and unsupported additions, changes and add-ons. Installing these versions is at your own risk. XBMC/Kodi does not provide any media content on it’s own and comes with no add-ons installed regarding this. Should you have problems please contact the correct add-on developer or website should you experience any issues.

I am pretty a pretty new xmbc/kodi user, i sideloaded kodi alpha 3 on my brand new firetv, what can i say its perfect. i have already installed the aeon q5 theme, which is working pretty good (one big problem the virtual keyboard isnt working, seeing now keys?)

but my question concerning the alpha 4 , you marked all the other skins now as incompatibel, what will happen if i install the alpha 4 and still using aeon q5?

    • Martijn Oct 03, 2014

then you keyboard doesn’t work for example and a lot more doesn’t work

    • Jim Oct 06, 2014

I would recommend that new users stick with stable final releases. Alpha builds will likely break at least one feature that you use and are for early adopters and experimenters. You’ve already seen that your skin of choice will break if you update to the latest alpha build.

Stick with Gotham until Helix is officially released.

Wher can i found the download for the cubox i4 pro (freescale imx6)

  • Artur Oct 03, 2014

installation did not ask me to move data?? whats wrong?

  • Artur Oct 03, 2014

it uninstalled xbmc but it didn’t even try to move data, where can I found manual instructions how to move it?

  • Artur Oct 03, 2014

total crap… it totally killed my Kodi Alpha 3, libraries are gone, half plugins don’t work, won’t network drives can’t add shared back, will just restore Alpha 3 from different PC and continue using Alpha 3 until this move user data gets sorted out.

    • Yeah, That Guy. Oct 04, 2014

Alpha is never production. Beta is more stable… But even then, breaks are expected.

Maybe you should wait for final releases?

  • tish solomon Oct 04, 2014

I’m planning on getting rid of cable soon. It’s not a 100% clear to me exactly what XBMC does or replaces. Can you give me a little more information in non-techie lingo? If I decide that XBMC Is for me, should I wait until the beta version comes out before I download? Cutting cable presents a though learning curb putting all of the information together and watching tv without cable! Thanks so much! Tish

    • poki Oct 04, 2014

Go with Gotham until it reaches a final release

    • Jim Oct 06, 2014

This isn’t exactly the best place to be asking about the basics of XBMC/Kodi. This is an announcement of a new alpha build, which is unstable and should only be used by advanced users.

Check out the forums, where there are stickies and tons of threads all about xbmc/kodi: http://forum.xbmc.org/

  • ferry Oct 04, 2014

    plugins don’t work any more
    istream,mash up ext.

    • Artur Oct 04, 2014

best to skip Alpha 4, I went back to Alpha 3 at least everything works.

      • Martijn Oct 04, 2014

nothing is broken in alpha4 and nothing will be changed either

        • Artur Oct 05, 2014

          even move userdata doesnt work….

        • dj Oct 10, 2014

That’s rubbish – I lost all my content sources, had to re-link them. Also, there is no option to select content – at the folder contains bit it says “?0?” or “?-1?”…..

          • Martijn Oct 10, 2014

you need to change to Confluence

  • ferry Oct 04, 2014

    ps. sacd works fine

  • WPN Oct 04, 2014

Had kodi alpha3 installed and XBMC 13.2. Removed Kodi before installation, left X in place.

Ran installation but user data is not moved from XBMC to Kodi

  • zebraitis Oct 04, 2014

Just finished loading this on a Win7-64 Intel based MC, that uses MySQL for shared DB.

Everything seems to have worked great, except that profiles (I have eight defined) did not retain their icons in the profiles menu, nor did the various profiles (when individually launched) retain their custom wallpaper.

This is, of course, a very minor inconvenience, as the actual icons and wallpaper were migrated with all the local data. I just need to remind Kodi where they are and to use them.

    (… good Kodi. sit.)

One quick note for others… While there is discussions about skins that work, the default skin (Confluence) was not in the list above. It does work.

    • zebraitis Oct 04, 2014

Oh… and PseudoTV works… but 1Channel does not.

(reminder: these are not the responsibility of the Kodi team, but stated here only as an FYI.)

  • Nils Oct 04, 2014

Thank you very much for DSD audio support!

    • John Jan 02, 2015

      +1 for that! :D

  • XKBoMdCi Oct 04, 2014

Getting script errors on Universal Add Ons Toolkit and TV Tunes stopped functioning

  • zebraitis Oct 05, 2014

    fyi… MySQL failure notice…

I also upgraded my iPadGen 1 to Alpha 4. As I am using MySQL, it’s important that all the DB versions are the same.

Right now, in MySQL, I have a music DB of rev 46 and 48. And in the XBMC.log, I can see that the iPad is trying to open music DB 47.

There is no 47. (so it tries to up the ver 46 and fails)

MY REQUEST: Pleas bump the IOS Kodi 14 Alpha 4 Music DB version to 48 and re-upload.

Works like a charm both on win7 and android.

But, seems like the audio normalization on android makes audio really low and the advancedsettings option for gain does nothing?

    • fritsch Oct 06, 2014

Set the “Normalize Audio” to false. We will change that setting’s name and the default for the final release and invert its meaning.

  • Stefan Grossmann Oct 05, 2014

Video works good, but Live TV Channel switching with DVBViewer PVR Addon is still Broken and Application will Crash. Also no DXVA2 Support for Playback with AMD A6 5600K APU while live TV.
I switched Back to Gotham 13.2 until this is fixed. I like the fast start of Kodi, so keep on working on it :)

  • tammy Oct 05, 2014

3d playback not working with kodi on android m8 amlogic box. Once 3d playback is
started it just freezes and causes kodi to crash. I’ve went back to 13.2 as it plays 3d OK fie me.

  • Scope Oct 06, 2014

I am using the nightly builds (and update on a near daily basis) and I must say that even the nightly builds are pretty stable (for the normal usages) and I have yet to spot any issues.. So well done to the dev team!

  • TK Oct 06, 2014

How do I rebrand this wrongly named version back to XBMC?

    • Edrikk Oct 07, 2014

      How clever.

  • Mike Oct 07, 2014

Has anyone had trouble upgrading from Alpha 3 to Alpha 4? My install seemed to work fine, it prompted me to move the data directories and finished. I had clicked the box for it to start Kodi after installation, but then got an XBMC: Error window which reads: ERROR: Unable to create application. Exciting.

I then uninstalled Alpha 4 and reinstalled Alpha 3, which works, but doesn’t know where to find any of the data that was moved to the new Kodi folders. I hoping to find a solution easier than renaming/moving all the kodi folders back to XBMC folders…

I’ running a Lenovo micro PC with Windows 7, 4 gigs of RAM.

    Any insight would be appreciated.

  • Adam Oct 07, 2014

Just upgraded to Alpha 4. Not a single issue. Thanks again for all the hard work that has gone into this. Looking forward to Helix stable and beyond.

  • Steve Atwal Oct 07, 2014

    Hi Guys. A quick question:

    - will Kodi support CEC-HDMI? i.e. this allows you to use your TV remote control to navigate around inside XBMC.

    • Nathan Betzen Oct 08, 2014

CEC is a device by device isse, Steve. Right now your options are to get a Pulse-Eight USB-CEC Adapter, which Kodi supports, or to get a Raspberry Pi, which supports CEC natively.

  • Ro6 Oct 07, 2014

Kodi 14.0 Alpha 4 for Android startup only writes: “Waiting for external storage” and does not start. Kodi 14.0 Alpha 3 worked.

  • darthwayner Oct 09, 2014

Just wanted to say I love KODI and I think the new product will be an improvement. I said yes to un-installing XBMC so my scripts and user data were supposed to be added to the new KODI install. That didn’t work for me (Win 7 – 64). 1channel and Mashup are the most notable non-working addons. Mtce tool doesn’t work either. Addon installer works well. Genesis (works perfectly) will likely become the new 1Channel. I tried some youtube fixes for 1channel and mashup, but to no avail. Cheers all

  • PeterG Oct 09, 2014

Having a lot of crashes on Alpha4, Sometimes i’ll stop playback & the skin (Default confluence) will just be white & I have to force-quit kodi.exe via task manager.
Alpha3 worked fine, just been an issue since moving to Alpha4.

  • dinmamma Oct 09, 2014

When i try to change chapter or fastforward in a mkv movie, xbmc crashes. I cant fastforward beacuse it jumps back to the beginning of the movie, same with chapters. It dont work. The movie is a x264 1080p RAR.

  • metin Oct 12, 2014

“Rikomagic MK902 Android 4.4 media player” devices I have. This device has an optical audio output. Over at the “Gotham XBMC 13.0″ installed.

I play the movie, even though the DTS support, optical audio output, film can not get DTS or AC3 audio output. Sound coming from the stereo.

“Gotham XBMC 13.2″ tried to install. But can not be loaded. Does not give any warning.

    Please help me.

  • Ozgur Oct 14, 2014

Alpha 3 was great but after alpha 4 nearly all Third party repositories showing no add-ons on list… and they can only manually installed… I don’t think this is a 3rd party incompability but I think it’s a Kodi issue…

    • Martijn Oct 14, 2014

      install nightly versions

      • Ozgur Oct 14, 2014

It’s still the issue on latest nightly…

    VERSION – Kodi Alpha 4

PROBLEMS- Script error with most of the addons, very disappointed with new version, back to Gotham 13.2

    • Martijn Nov 29, 2014

      Use alpha 5

  • Gary Dec 19, 2014

Gotham 13.2 is still way ahead of Kodi. Have both on my TV Box and am wondering why you just didn’t rename Xbmc to Kodi and save yourself a bunch of work?

Kodi does seem a little faster but, not enough to warrant a change. Do yourself a favor and slap the name Kodi on XBMC and work for improvement from there.

    • kib Dec 21, 2014

That is exactly what we did. Kodi is simply XBMC 14. We were required to change the name because of a deal made to avoid a lawsuit.

  • mumbles Jan 07, 2015

I installed this on my Ouya and it will often say it’s preparing for its first run and install it every time I run it. This morning I tried running it again and it wiped all my settings
