Kodi 14.0 Helix – Release candidate 3

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on Dec 09, 2014 in Pre-Release
Splash

Although we announced our first release candidate not long ago, we’re proud to release our third one in the 14.0 Helix range. Some might find it odd that we do so many releases in this short period of time. We can assure you that this is by intention. By doing more rapid releases we get better feedback if changes done by our developers are actually effective and thus create a better final release.

This 14.0 release brings many updates and changes, not the least of which is the change to the software’s name and logo. The release candidate cycle will also be the first to include the official logo of Kodi! The ins and outs about the logo can be read here in case you are interested. A detailed changelog can be found under milestones on our code repository, should you be interested. With that said, let’s take a look at some of the features that come with the 14.0 release candidate.

Changes

Below we will give a snapshot of the most important fixes done since the first release candidate.

  • * Bump FFmpeg to 2.4.4
  • * Fix problem with setting content on new and existing video sources
  • * Fix spinner in video settings for choosing hardware or software decoding
  • * Fix recording history in PVR
  • * Separate sort order in PVR window for each directory
  • * Fix PVR preview video scaling for AMLCodec on Android
  • * Fix restart option on Win 8.1
  • * Fix crashes on certain Intel GPU when playing video
  • * Fix crashes on certain videos on Android 5.0 devices (Nexus Player and ADT-1)
  • * Fix LPCM (audio/L16) streaming via UPnP
  • * Use correct art type when appending art to item lists
  • * Fix python PIL package on Windows that caused crash on weather add-on
  • * Updated GUI translation files

To not sum up every other changes we have done in this release, here’s a list of the past relevant news items:

A Few Warnings and Notices

This release marks the switch to the new name Kodi. When you install this release candidate, your library and add-ons will be moved to Kodi, making reverting back to 13.2 fairly difficult. As such, it is recommended that you back up your library as well as your settings before installing Kodi.

Also, as Kodi is an unsigned application on OSX, you may need to go through a slightly different process to start it the first time. After you have copied Kodi to the Applications folder, you will need to “right click” or “two finger click” Kodi from within the Applications folder and select “Open” and then accept the warning. You should only need to do this the first time you run Kodi.

Download

The release can be found on our official download page as mentioned below. This page contains our release candidate builds and our nightly builds for the Helix release.

The first ever Kodi T-Shirt

Because of your generosity in t-shirt sales, straight-up donations, and word-of-mouth evangelizing, this project has lasted for 12 years and through four different names, and with your help, we all believe it can last twice that long again. This is the very first t-shirt sale we’re doing with the new Kodi logo design. We’re mostly doing this sale because our developers wanted a cool new shirt, but we figured we probably weren’t the only ones. So if you’d like the very first official Kodi shirt, have at it. Just follow the link to get it.

How to Contribute

If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after if asked submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support in our Forums where you can, or donate to the XBMC Foundation if you like. For a current FAQ on Kodi 14, visit our Helix FAQ. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks.

    Sounds Great!
    Will test it this afternoon.

    Thanks for the great work!

  • lin Dec 09, 2014

Fast forward the process needs a voice

    • edward Dec 12, 2014

      i have no sound

  • Hassan Moharram Dec 09, 2014

    Dear Sir,

Many thanks for you for this great job,
I have two things for you :
1- arabic languge key Board ( please add it )
2- when we play a vidio or tv on Kodi , some times it take more than 5 mintes to start and it give us (( working )) please wait- so if you fix an option to cansill working insted to wait several minites and after that it may work or not work ..

    with best regards,

    Hassan Moharram

    • rykios Dec 09, 2014

Old problem that NEEDS to be fixed!
“Working Please wait” more than (user-selectable-time) should cancel the non-responding procedure whatever it may be and return to previous / idle state

(I have this a lot with live TV when network overloaded)

    • Simon Dec 09, 2014

      Hi Hassan,

regarding 2): this is too unspecific and no one of the devs is reading this here. Please post a detailed description of your issue with logs in the Kodi forums!

      • Stefan Dec 09, 2014

I think Hassan mean that when live online TV start it connects for a long time at times and that he would like to have a right click option to cancel the connection…but yes requesting issues are better in the forum as the devs are there. :)

    • Rocker Dec 09, 2014

Regarding arabic keyboard I think you will find that the answer will be “patch welcomed” or “patch wanted”.

      http://kodi.wiki/view/HOW-TO:Modify_keyboard.xml

That is saying that you can create a such keyboard layout file yourself and submit it as a contribution to this open source project.

      Example: https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/5685

      More info here http://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=90

      • Dr.Romantic Dec 15, 2014

thanks to your links I had a go at it and submitted my first contribution for Arabic keyboardlayout
        https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/pull/5945

lets see if it will be merged

    • Humbs Dec 09, 2014

      Ohhh… how i wish that….
      Waiting is terrible.
Is the only issue i see at this moment…..

  • Simon Dec 09, 2014

GREAT work guys! More frequent release candidates is a good strategy. The final release will be awesome.

Keep up the great work! :-)

  • Stefan Dec 09, 2014

I have now moved on from beta to Nightly Builds to get the newest updates and I must say it work great minus some smaller things from time to time but it is worth it as now I’m keeping up with the latest updates……Oh and last update before today fixed an SVT addon Issue with A-Ö programs not showing up so that is great and as of now what I can see everything seam to work great……There was a earlier issue when Kodi gave error while shutting down….seams fixed now aswell :) …….So great work guys and keep up the good work……Thank You*

  • Stevie Dec 09, 2014

SMB Shares broken in RC3 with Amazon Fire TV, RC2 works fine, go to settings addons go smb nothing shows , previously setup smb shared folders work for media but addons do not work.

    • Martijn Dec 09, 2014

This is not the place to report problems as devs won’t read it.

    • Stevie Dec 09, 2014

      Ignore this, problem resolved.

      So far nice release :)

  • T Dec 09, 2014

i’m not an early adopter (i moved from frodo to gotham only after 13.1 came out), but kodi’s looking fantastic! amazing job, y’all.

  • Wildcopper Dec 09, 2014

    Hello,

this release candidate is much better already, but I still get freezes when I switch channels between different IPTV UPD multicast streams.

  • HTPCmaniak Dec 09, 2014

    When KODIbuntu?

  • zeca Dec 09, 2014

    GREAT work.
Are you planning to Bump FFmpeg to 2.5 before the final version?

    • fritsch Dec 11, 2014

No. Not before Helix. We will do right away after Helix is released.

  • Filipe Dec 09, 2014

    This program is perfect, GOOD

  • julien Dec 09, 2014

    Hi,
Thank you very much for your work!
Could you give us more information about Android compatibility (bitstream HD audio formats, framerate,…) especially with rk3288?
I bougth an Open Hour Chameleon and i’m a little confused because this is notre usable as a HD media player for now..

Sorry for my english ans thanks again!!

  • Woerd88 Dec 09, 2014

    Nice! Thanks

  • johncord Dec 09, 2014

I submitted a Bugreport to the Forum but no answer… ???

  • Marshall Dec 09, 2014

No dialog on Ouya with Dolby Digital just music and sound effects. 13.1 plays everything fine.

  • Eric Mesa Dec 09, 2014

A while back it was mentioned that the new codec h.265 (I think) was taxing on the CPU. Is that because it’s new to FFMPEG or because no one has yet built special chips for it and/or built it into graphics chips?

    • eema Dec 09, 2014

It’s because almost noone has hardware decoding for hevc yet. Actually in media codec and some android box I think it’s supported

    • fritsch Dec 11, 2014

There is no hwaccel yet in ffmpeg that decodes h265 in hardware. Intel is working on their skylake drivers to get that done with vaapi and nvidia is also doing work in that regard, but it will need at least ffmpeg 2.6 (which is not yet out) to have support concerning that.

There are some amlogic devices that have h265 support though.

  • Thorsten M. Dec 09, 2014

Nice work, thx… i love it.
    I got a problem in Helix RC3.
I go to “Set Content” and after i choose on, there is the question for sync. I apply and nothing happens.
I use a Synology-NAS and with Gotham everything works fine.
Without this feature – ich can’t test Helix – Sry.

  • questions Dec 10, 2014

how do i update to the new release if i have a previous KODI version?

  • Daloukas Dec 10, 2014

  • bayern Dec 10, 2014

Sorry but no info means no help. Problem reports on blog posts will not be read or handled. Report it on the forum.

  • Spock Dec 10, 2014

First off love the product, and superior effort by all.

But, (and take this with love) if Kodi is striving for professional respect, and credibility – please ensure your media releases are proof read for spelling and grammatically correct. Third media update (that I have seen) that has errors. Are the devs “affective” or effective. I know this seems nitpicking, and let the flames soar – but products advance in popularity if the media write-ups look ignorant. Again, with love and keep up the awesome-sauce work.

    • Hedge Druid Dec 22, 2014

      Hi, Spock
How about volunteering as a proof reader!!!!?
For many developers and other Kodi contributors English is not their primary language. Whilst most do use spell checkers, syntax , grammar and correct sounding but incorrect words are often missed!!!

  • Kevinnorte Dec 11, 2014

Kodi Rc 3 doesn’t work for me, no video just a green screen

and a special Thanks, for all Kodi Developer

  • Robi Dec 11, 2014

Martijn, still the same problem, version 13 and 14 Alpha works fine, but no Beta version and Helix rc version (1,2,3) does not work – writes only: “waiting for external storage”. What could happen?

    • Simon Dec 11, 2014

Post a DETAILED description (ideally with logs, precise system info, etc.) in the Forums!

Nobody of the developers are reading your problems here…

    * Bump FFmpeg to 2.4.4

FFmpeg 2.5 has been released a couple of days ago :)

    • Martijn Dec 11, 2014

Sorry but that’s not going to be included

      • Simon Dec 11, 2014

Yes, that probably too late for 14.0 … maybe for a future release … 14.1. or so.

        • fritsch Dec 11, 2014

Which feature do you miss that 2.5 brought?

          • Martijn Dec 11, 2014

            because it’s newer i think :)

  • nick Dec 12, 2014

Nexus player crashing issue still not fixed. Do you recommend a fresh install instead of installing on top of RC2?

    • Martijn Dec 13, 2014

Crashing on Nexus Player is still being investigated. No ETA on a fix.

  • J876 Dec 12, 2014

Thanks for fixing the PVR addons in this Release Candidate!

I have now installed Kodi on my Ubuntu HTPC.

    Great Work!

  • nopa Dec 14, 2014

I’m trying to install Kodi Helix RC3 on my galaxy tab 3 and its taking forever to download the ARM version. I tried the x86 but its not compatible. The download fails after a few mins.

    Help please!!

    Thank you

  • Hans Dec 14, 2014

    Random freezes

  • Merwenus Dec 14, 2014

The previous dark background kodi logo was way better, the white one is pretty lame.

  • Mir0 Dec 14, 2014

Maybe when Helix gets to final, next thing to do is completly diffrent default skin. Confulence is so basic and awful skin, kodi deserves way better skin than confluence.
Thats the weakest part of kodi/xbmc. Yes there are other skins but 90 % of them are WIP and mostly buggy.

Kodi needs default skin that is up to reputation of fantastic software that Kodi is.

    • Simon Dec 14, 2014

What is wrong with the Confluence skin? I actually like it the best from most skins.

Which one do you think should become the new default skin??

      • BigJRM Dec 22, 2014

My vote for a new default skin is TRANSPARENCY! I just love this skin for all its eye-candy fanart. But then, i have a big storage system.

    • julestop Dec 14, 2014

It would be good to vote on a new default skin for Kodi… Something elegant and easy to use for beginners so that it’s not so intimidating.

      • Martijn Dec 15, 2014

A vote wouldn’t do anything as it would still require some one to create a new skin. Picking a skin from current available ones is also not done.

  • DC Dec 14, 2014

I also see the ‘green screen’ problem with helix rc3 (win 7/64, amd 4550 card). If I turn off DXVA2 under System->Settings->Video->Acceleration the video will display. I’ve logged a problem report on the Kodi Community Forum (General / Windows Support) and included a debug log.

  • Juan Falgueras Dec 14, 2014

Great media player (the best) but used to Plex (that is exactly the opposite, a crap media player) the Metadata, any kind of fanart, imdb info, anything except the filenames, would be welcome here. MacMini OS X Yosemite user.

  • Brian Dec 15, 2014

Just updated my pivos to 14.0 rc3 and playbacks are all in zoom can’t find a fix anywhere?

  • Bioxxx Dec 15, 2014

Hi, in the KODI version, will be supported H.265?

    • kib Dec 15, 2014

If you look at the previous post about the release candidates, you’ll see that Kodi indeed supports decoding H.265.
At the moment however, this can only be done in software because there is no hardware which can do it yet.
Other codecs will of course still be decoded with hardware acceleration when you have the correct hardware available.

      http://kodi.tv/kodi-14-0-helix-release-candidate-arives/

      • 0s&1s Dec 15, 2014

        Hi,

I think, for the previous release at least, ALL decoding is done in software, not only H.265. I installed it, and it didn’t work trough va-api. Also, it was stated that: “The caveat to this update is that it is entirely software based.” Does this release work with hardware decoding?

        • six Dec 15, 2014

There is no hardware currently capable of h.265 decoding – thus all h.265 decoding is necessarily software based. (Future updates to current high-end desktop GPUs may allow hardware decoding, but AFAIK it is not yet supported)

        • kib Dec 15, 2014

Yes, both the last version and this version can do hardware accelerated video playback.
You might have been experiencing an issue on your setup, but it was not related to missing capabilities.

I have modified the line in the blog article to be more accurate: “The caveat to this update is that the decoding of h.265 is entirely software based.” as I could see how it was possible to read past the fact that it only referred to the added h.265 decoding capability

          • wlfman Dec 15, 2014

well at least it decodes it through CPU, better that than nothing… some people run HTPC setup with decent CPU able to cope up with it so they will appreciate it, until GPU manufacturers come up with drivers to enable GPU decode :-) thanks Kodi team!

          • kib Dec 16, 2014

Drivers will not help you here: the manufacturers need to come up with new hardware that can do it.

  • Deniz Dec 15, 2014

Both on Windows 8 and Android device.

  • IPTVxtra Dec 16, 2014

hls/https Streams still does not work on Android
is planned for the near future?

  • Ano Nymous Dec 16, 2014

  • BrenteR Dec 17, 2014

RC2 as well as RC3 crashing all the time during video playback.
Cant reproduce clearly but happens multiple times a day.

upgraded from gotham so maybe thats an issue?

  • Craig Dec 18, 2014

I get “kodi has stopped” on android when I try to skip 10 minutes ahead with a rockchip rk3288

  • Shane Dec 18, 2014

    Hi all,

I’m using the new Kodi RC3 release and it’s working great however for the life of me I can’t add enable the live TV tab. I’ve tried everything even reverted to using the fresh start to erase everything and still no luck.

I was wondering if anyone might be able to provide some guidance?

    Would be much appreciated
    Thanks
    Shane

    • kib Dec 19, 2014

We explicitly tell people not to use the ‘fresh start’ add-on that someone made, because it installs illegal and unreliable unsupported add-ons. It is not made by us, and not supported on this site (or any of the official channels of the XBMC Foundation).
Take note, by installing these add-ons you might very well be held accountable for criminal charges depending on your countries’ laws.

  • Nugpot Dec 21, 2014

    Great work guys!

Just one request: Update the default confluence vertical skin to work with kodi, iow the movie and music scraper plugins don’t show up when trying to change content type. And changing the “xbmc” logo on the skin to “kodi” will be great. I do believe it is still the best and most beautiful skin around.

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to all!

    • kib Dec 21, 2014

The default Kodi skin is Confluence, which has a horizontal menu. There is no default Confluence with a vertical menu.

I believe that the skin you are talking about is a mod of Confluence made by a forum member, so you might have some luck by asking him in the forum thread if he can update the skin.

      • Nugpot Dec 22, 2014

My mistake, I assumed that confluence vertical was default since it was the skin I first saw on XBMC 6 or 7 years ago. Anyway I see its is the same author that did the confluence horizontal skin which is currently the official skin (Jezz_X). I’ll try to get my message to him, thanks.

  • Ben Toy Dec 21, 2014

Please fix karaoke player stil crashing when plating. could not move to kodi. Thank you.

  • Bill Bailey Dec 21, 2014

I am still using windows XP.
Is there a download that will work on XP

    • kib Dec 21, 2014

Support was dropped in version 13. You would need to run version 12, or look at installing a more modern OS on your media centre.
If costs are a problem, take a look at kodibuntu or OpenElec instead.

  • Michael Dec 21, 2014

The new Kodi logo for rc3 is hard to recognized among other apps with that light blue color. After I installed the new Kodi rc3. When I went back and look for it I thought I missed the installation, until I had to look for it alphabetically. Just my 50 cents.

  • James Dec 22, 2014

The final is on the git shouldnt be too long now :)

  • zebraitis Dec 22, 2014

Just did a weekend upgrade to KODI RC 3 and Win 8.1

    Two items of interest:

    1) Fresh installs of Win 8.1 require MS DirectX 11. KODI requires DirectX 9. Load 11, then KODI install works (although it’s not recommended).

    More info: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=196787

    2) Where did my DTS-HD MA go !??! Oh, there it is…

    More info: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=212026

Still, XBMC/KODI is the best !

  • Rachel Dec 22, 2014

Just a little note in service of those of us who don’t pay full attention:

If you click the Download link in this post, and then download the link (for your platform) in front of you, you will of course get the XBMC 13. build. How about adding an anchor to the link so it scrolls down to the Kodi builds. :-)

  • BTR Dec 22, 2014

I had noted now around a week ago or so that Kodi 14 (Helix) RC3 nightly builds had been mixed with Kodi 15 alpha 1 (called now “master”); why? this was not communicated in advance; now there is a problem, as I had used to install the last nightly builds keeping up to date Kody to the latest, but I can not install now Kodi 14 (Helix) RC3 over a nightly build of Kodi 15 alpha 1; can you do something on the app signature to let install RC3 nightly builds over kodi 15 alpha 1?. Thanks.

    • Martijn Dec 22, 2014

No we will not change that

      • BTR Dec 22, 2014

But that is the situation now, all of them Kodi RC3 (Helix) & Kodi 15 Alpha 1 are mixed on the same list under Android tab, and you can go from Helix nightly built to “Master” Kodi 15 alpha 1 but from this v15 you can not go back to Kodi 14 RC3 at least a new clean installation had been done & restoring back up; please take a look of the list, so somebody did and not inform to you the devs responsible for them.

Again we will not change this. This is how android works. We do not provide any download utility and just point to a download list. Up to you what you download. You want to install nightlies so then you are responsible. Don’t want to run into this issue, use stable downloads.

i just installed stable Kodi Helix 14.0 on my Android gbox today. Every thing I stream to watch is zoomed. I’ve checked all the settings and they are fine. As someone mentioned previously, everything else fits normally on tv screen except all videos when they stream. Has anything been done or is someone working to fix this?

    • Laurie P Dec 30, 2014

Is anybody looking into this? Going into day 3 since install and still cannot watch anything!

      • Martijn Dec 30, 2014

For those questions regarding support for XP.. Don’t. Anything XP could do, Linux Mint can do better. I’ve been swapping all my old laptops and desktops to the current Linux Mint 17.1 and use cinnamon for PC’s and XFCE for a lighter setup. Working great. Now moviong onto friends and family for the same. Honestly, for performance sake I like LM17 better than win7

I have the latest version of Kodi 14.0 helix. It has all been set up correctly i believe. When i launch the program everything fits my screen fine. Im am watching on a 32 inch tv. Everything looks normal. My problem however is when i watch any tv program or movie from any source or repository. It seems as though the picture is zoomed in and doesnt fit the screen. Please help.

  • John Jan 01, 2015

Same problem here… When streaming a video from add-ons the video is zoomed in and chopped off. Running 14.0 Helix on Amiko A3 box.

    • AM Jan 02, 2015

Same problem here. Running a GBox Matricom MX2. Had to revert back to XBMC Gotham 13.2. Video playback was off-center and zoomed in. EVERYTHING else displayed ok with the exception of video playback.

      • Kevin Jan 03, 2015

Change 1080 to 720p in mboxsettings the problem is gone

  • Carl Jan 02, 2015

I know ive got the same box and now I can’t even found Gotham 13.2 to download. Any help please??

  • John Jan 05, 2015

Reinstalled Gotham 13.2 on the Amiko A3 and video streaming works OK, looks like the issue is with KODI 14.0 with chopping and off center.

  • John Jan 05, 2015

Just installed Helix 14.1 and video issue is fixed :) Great work guys!

  • Steve Jan 15, 2015

I have had the zoomed video playback issue as well on matricom mx2. I changed it from 1080p to 720 in mboxsettings and it works fine now.

As a side note, will they be fixing this so that we can start using it in 1080p again. I have an awsome tv and would hate to have to use it now in 720
