Kodi 15.0 alpha 1 – The road to Isengard

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on Feb 28, 2015 in Pre-Release
Kodi 15.0 Isengard

Last year we shocked the community and the world with the announcement of our name change. Now some months later we are happy to see that a lot of people have adopted this change and embraced what is now know as Kodi. The best media center in the world… We promised that we would stick true to our goal of improving it as media center and we will.

With this first public alpha release we will look back at the changes we have been doing for the past two months since the 14.0 release. We would certainly like to thank users who were already using our nightly builds to reach this stage.

As most will already know, with a new big version comes a new release code name following the alphabet. After a team vote and da-anda (our artwork guru) actually visited Middle Earth we chose to go for Isengard. At times you will find this as reference for the actual version number which will be 15.x

On the road to Isengard our developers will continue to focus on removing old legacy code, as well as improving both usability and user friendliness.

We’ve had about 400 pull-request for code merges, 1322 commits and thousands of code lines changed. Almost all sums up into the promised clean-up and stability. However because of the vast amount of changes it’s kinda hard to filter out specific problems that have been fixed. You can browse through the full change log: 15.0 alpha1 Otherwise we will sum up the most notable changes in the list below.

Important changes:

  • * Added adaptive seeking through audio and video playback, also know as “skip steps”
  • * Android HEVC H.265 support for some chipsets
  • * Improve webserver caching control
  • * External subtitles over UPnP
  • * Allow scanning of new sources and marking as watched during other library operations such as “update library”
  • * Allow different sort orders for different sort methods
  • * Start of integration binary add-ons and changing the build system around it
  • * Improved CC (Closed Captions) support for Live TV
  • * ffmpeg 2.5.4 update
  • * Remove remaining SDL code
  • * Minimal Mac OSX 10.7 Lion required
  • * Only OSX 64-bit builds provided by us, so no more 32bit builds
  • * Minimal iOS 5.1 required
  • * iOS 8.1 SDK & MacOSX 10.10 SDK
  • * Minimum Android 4.2 Jelly Bean MR1 required
  • * Android API 17 as minimum with SDK 14 and NDK 10e
  • * Removed the need for root/SU on Android
  • * Android PIL packaging fixed
  • * Changed code to  C++11
  • * Variety of memleaks, segfaults, crashes and minor issues fixed
  • * General improvements regarding code stability and performance in all areas
  • * General code clean-up in all areas to simplify adding future features

Skip steps (Step Forward & Back improvement)

Adaptive seek in actionThe Step Forward, Step Back and Small Step Back actions are now forwarded to a new seeking function that is configurable in the GUI via the Skip steps and Skip delay settings. It allows single skip steps backwards and forwards with the left and right cursor keys as before, however a new feature is that by pressing the left and right keys multiple times you can skip with increasingly larger steps. Another feature of this new seeking function is that music files can also now can make use of skip steps. For more on this see http://kodi.wiki/view/Skip_Steps

Apple devices

ATV2: As we announced in January, we have stopped the support and building for the ATV2 device. As our main iOS/OSX developer had stated, to keep supporting this device would cost a lot of effort, trial and error and it was getting outdated for what we demanded of the device. You can read the announcement on saying goodbye here: link

iOS: With the demise of the ATV2 and the push to change our code to be C++11 compliant (which solved various problems), our developer had to bump the used SDK for iOS to 8.1  With that, the minimum version Kodi can run on will now be iOS 5.1 (and higher).

OSX: In addition to the SDK bump on iOS, we also had to bump the used SDK for Mac OSX operating system to version SDK10.10 This means that you Mac needs at least Mac OSX10.7 “Lion” running to operate Kodi 15.0 Since all devices that run OSX 10.7 “Lion” also have 64bit compliant hardware, we will also stopped building the 32bit version from now on.

note: These changes do not apply to Kodi 14.x so you can keep enjoying that version without problems.

Android_jelly_beanSadly at some point we have to say goodbye to certain things to not hold us back. The release of 15.0 will mean that your Android device will need at least have Android 4.2 “Jelly Bean MR1″. Since the Android platform wasn’t as mature at the time we added it to our platform list, we had to incorporate certain workarounds to keep functioning.  With the introduction of Android 5.0 platform and Android TV it was felt this was the time to release us from these workarounds of older Android versions.

So what does this mean for 15.0 and up?

  • * We now use Android SDK API level 17 as minimum and NDK 10d
  • * Android 4.2 “Jelly Bean MR1″ is required to be able to install and run
  • * You will get the message “there was a problem parsing the package” if your Android version is not sufficient.
  • * Android TV platform should now be fully supported. As of this time you will still have to “side load” it onto your device.
  • * Various devices will simply not be able to install Kodi any more. We will not provide a list because there are simply to many out there. Check the Android version you have installed on your device.
  • * Removed superuser/root access requests which can cause problems on certain devices that relied on this.
  • * Devices that don’t have their firmware in order will cause various problems: not starting or crashing at start-up, black screen and perhaps more. Please contact your device reseller for further support regarding firmware problems.
  • * These changes do not apply to Kodi 14.x so you can keep enjoying that release without problems (except in some cases).

General: So far 15.0 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham and in Helix then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: As of this moment, all skins that worked in Helix should still work in Isengard. Though in PVR there are certain changes that might be noticeable and need specific skin changes. These changes are minimal and shouldn’t cause any major problems in usability. Overall you should be able to enjoy this alpha build without any problems in this area.

Sum up

As you have read, we’ve had to drop quite some legacy devices for this release. We feel your pain however this is the only way we could keep evolving towards stability, code clean-up and future features. The good news is that so far there will be no significant changes on the horizon that could have serious effect on the add-ons and skin(s) you are using. All the code changes have happened “under the hood” and you should notice little to nothing of the hard work that has been done., apart from better stability and performance.

Wow!! Fantastic news! You guys rock, keep up the great work. Sounds like Isengard will be a super release.

  • Franklin Feb 28, 2015

Sad to hear of no 32 bit OS X build. I still run Kodi daily on an old Core Duo MacBook Pro. Guess I won’t be upgrading from Helix.

    • Martijn Mar 01, 2015

You can still build it yourself as the code is still there. We just don’t provide binaries.

  • Fernando Mar 01, 2015

I missed the great new feature that is External subtitles over UPnP in here. PR 6184

    • Martijn Mar 01, 2015

guess i forgot adding it. done now.

  • abrasion Mar 01, 2015

Wow the adaptive seeking and skip steps, I proposed this idea several years ago, I don’t know if my thread spurred it but good to see it being looked at, very cool.

  • gdd2010 Mar 01, 2015

Nice. Only question… Will you allow the main menu to have the “TV Shows” link activated for iOS devices. I have many a series that I port to my device and would like to use Kodi to watch these TV Episodes.

  • Marcelo Gonçalves Mar 01, 2015

I don’t know whether this would be possible to be added or not, but when you do, for example, a movie search by typing the name of a movie when you’re on a particular addon, there could be a “search history”, I mean, if I decide to change addons, and try to look for the same movie on a different addon, then I wouldn’t have to type the movie name again ’cause the movie name would be in the “search history”.This would be pretty helpful for people who use tv boxes like me.

  • artur Mar 01, 2015

any chance of 64bit windows build? practically all new windows machines are 64bit.

    • KIb Mar 01, 2015

Work is being done on it, but the main difficulty is getting all our WIndows dependencies to build on 64bit. As far as I understood, for some libraries there are only 32bit sources, which means the devs now have to look in and understand what these libraries do internally, then rewrite them for 64bit support – where we previously just build them.

    • Laz Mar 02, 2015

      ^^ This.
And fix the windows bug where it wont update the libraries properly after scanning folders and scanning for new content. Ive lost 80% of my files without changing anything at all in the folders by rebuilding my libraries. Iit wasnt updating the libraries with new shows that were added with the exact same name taxonomy as the previous files that were added. And after doing a Clean Library shows were removed from the library and never added back in like previous versions would.

      • Martijn Mar 02, 2015

        what, where, how, what version?
Not mention this and just commenting on a blog posts isn’t helping.

Go the forum and provide proper information. Also start by installing 14.2beta. That’s the only way to get it solved for your case.

    • kib Mar 02, 2015

Just an added note: there is almost no use to having a 64bit Windows version, I believe people are only working on it because they think it is a nice challenge.

      • Shipwreck Mar 22, 2015

64 bit Windows allows for the use of more memory. 32 bit is limited to 3.5 gigs of memory and 64 bit can use 4 gig and up. More memory allows for better video, especially HD, and can be very beneficial if using a PVR addon to record one show while watching another, recording more than one show while watching another, allow for picture in picture, and other features that would require more memory to run more smoothly and efficiently. It could also allow for 3D movie/TV viewing should that be available.

  • jpadames Mar 01, 2015

    Chromecast support???

    • kib Mar 01, 2015

Feel free to submit a chromecast implementation to our github !

  • Groty Mar 01, 2015

Any news on libretro? Is it in the plans at some point? It’s popped up on the Wiki pages under future enhancements for as long as I can remember, but never a mention anywhere else. It’s inclusion would be awesome.

    • Martijn Mar 01, 2015

It’s still being worked on. The biggest problem was proper input control which nearing completion.

    • Kib Mar 02, 2015

If you are interested than keep an eye on posts done by garbear in the RetroPlayer forum (http://forum.kodi.tv/forumdisplay.php?fid=194)

  • Jazz Mar 01, 2015

I would like to know the steps to removing and reinstalling the new version. I have a Mac Pro

  • Lauren Leigh Sprayberry Mar 01, 2015

What about Windows 7? Helix kept crashing on Windows 7. I finally went back to Gotham, which doesn’t crash.

    • Anthony Mar 01, 2015

Check out the forums – the Helix crashing on Windows issue has been fixed in the latest Helix 14.1 betas which will be released as Helix 14.2

  • marcos Mar 01, 2015

Fantastic… the only thing i think many waiting is the 3d iso reading… but i read that ffmpeg is the cause of that… hope yet anyway :)

    • FLaSH Mar 01, 2015

  • Joe Mar 01, 2015

I am really looking forward to more UPNP Library support. It would be great if UPNP sources could be loaded into the local library. The workarounds are okay but it would be so much better with full library support.
A custom power saving script option would go a long way also I think for a lot of users. Just a simple “Custom” option and a select custom script field. It would be great for so many things like turning equipment off, turning lights off, spinning down hard drives, turning down thermostats, etc.

As always you guys are great and I can not wait to get my hands dirty with the new alpha.

  • Pat thomas Mar 01, 2015

as a grandmother who tries to keep current I want to send many thanks to kodi team. I am a relative newbie, started with Gotham, and I love it! Find no reason for cable and try to spread the word to everyone I meet. I prefer to support kodi financially than to support my sad cable company. You rock! I am taking all my old friends into the kodi realm. Thanks again!

    • Hedge Druid Mar 14, 2015

      Hi Pat
I’m with you all the way… as a pensioned granddad… Kodi and it’s wonderful team brings joy into my living room. I also promote and where possible install it for friends. Helps keep my mind active and me out and about.

  • lamm Mar 01, 2015

Headless version? Upnp improvements(server library on clients etc)?

    • Morpheus65535 Mar 01, 2015

      +1 for headless version!

      • kib Mar 02, 2015

It’s a goal to get this working, but it requires changes in many different areas.
Many of these changes have been made already, some are still being worked on. I guess the correct term would be ‘not ready yet’.

    • Kurosh May 07, 2015

      +1 headless!!

  • Andreas Mar 01, 2015

Skip steps! That’s brilliant! The only thing I thought was missing. Fantastic news indeed!

  • zebraitis Mar 01, 2015

Glad to see that ios 5.1 is still supported. That will allow the Gen1 iPad to keep working as a kodi media client.

    My wife thanks you!

  • Peter Mar 01, 2015

“Android HVEC H.265 support for some chipsets”

    Which chipsets?

  • Stefan Mar 01, 2015

I’m on Development Builds as of now as I love all this new stuff :) , getting better and better ;) and nice to see add-ons working (one important thing) wish that the add-ons never got old and that there could be compability mode for older ones so they could work still if not suported by new version but within a containment field….Like Windows compability mode kind of a thing for older versions….but maybe to much code work I would not know that as I’m not a programer….but anyhow thank you my favorite team behind this the greatest media player ever :)

  • IDSG Mar 01, 2015

Hi, i have an Ainol Aurora 2 with CM10.2 (Android 4.3.1) when i tried to install KODI 15 shows me the “there was a problem parsing the package” message, what could it be?

  • flhthemi Mar 01, 2015

14.2 alpha still crashes on my 32 bit win7 and on my 64 bit Win 8.1 when you close Kodi. Might be fixed for some, but not for me. :)

  • Cristian Conti Mar 01, 2015

I still hope to find a complete better support for anime scraping.

  • magy Mar 01, 2015

    What about Audio DSP?

    • kib Mar 02, 2015

Being worked on hard, but not ready (at this point) to be merged into the code.
Depending on when it is finished it will be merged. If you want to keep an eye on it, their is a development thread on the forum here: http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=186857

  • Chris Mar 01, 2015

I’m still looking forward for the promised native joypad support for GBA emulation :)

  • Fabiano G. Souza Mar 01, 2015

Skip steps is amazing. Well done!

  • dirk Mar 01, 2015

Since I upgraded from version 14.2 to 15 alpha 1 i have so many problems. Almost everytime i want to see a movie kodi close s .. very I want to go back to 14.2 but that is not possible because whrn i try i cannot install version 14.2 . Please some advice or help..

    • d'oh Mar 01, 2015

With Alphas, problems are expected. There’s warnings before you install that they are not stable builds. You’ll need to restore from the backup you made before upgrading to 15. If you didn’t make a backup you’ll be starting from scratch.

  • Anthony Mar 01, 2015

Was thinking of upgrading from Gotham to Helix, but it almost sounds like I might be better off waiting for Isengard (windows 8.1 htpc)

    • KIb Mar 04, 2015

For many people v14.1 works very well on Windows. There are tens of thousands of users on it already. The minor percentage that had issues with crashing seems to be almost completely covered by the 14.2alpha1 version which tries to fix that specific WIndows-only bug.

For now you could definitely try to go to 14.
From 14 to 15 would be less intrusive (skins and add-ons which would not work anymore) than between 13 and 14, because we aimed for more backwards compatibility – especially in the skin department.

      • Anthony Mar 10, 2015

Thanks for the reply–always nice to get a more informed perspective. At the moment, it seems like the skins I’d be most interested in (Aeon Nox skins, especially those more geared to a powerful HTPC) are still in various states of development/updates for Helix, so I may wait just a little longer–I’m a big-time procrastinator. :)

I’ve seen a few references in the forums about the move to more RERO development–it might be worth a blog post, explaining the reasons for the change, and what we can expect in terms or skin compatibility, etc going forward.

In any case, many, many, many thanks for this amazing software!

  • sayed Mar 01, 2015

    its very nice ver.
    i have xtreamer (Android )
    everything nice & good

    only sound problem 5.1
    play all on 2.1

  • Okuturn Mar 02, 2015

The only thing I have on my wish list is to have two different settings for “play next video automatically”. I know I can queue a list but I like my TV episode still play in succession but not my movies. If I could say play next episode automatically and not have it affect the movies would be great.

    • Martijn Mar 02, 2015

Context menu -> play from here
Plays all videos in the list

    • BAM Mar 08, 2015

Check out the LazyTV addon. Should do what you want. You can have it play the next episode of a series, and it can also notify you if there is an earlier episode unwatched in the library. Its configurable to how you like it.

  • wonka vision Mar 02, 2015

Will there be a new skin to replace the confluence skin? Confluence is looking a bit dated/tired!

    • kib Mar 02, 2015

This has been considered and might happen.

      • zaqzyp Mar 10, 2015

Meh, I hope not. I’ve tested practically all custom skins and none of them come close to Confluence. I always go back to it. They look bad, have worse UI and remove/change stuff that works and looks great in Confluence.

Sure, recently I’ve started modding it lighly. But the basic skin is great. Good work Team XBMC. :)

  • Mark Mar 02, 2015

If 32b OSX is cancelled, how will i then be able to connect to my Mac mini server with AFP share?

  • TJ Mar 02, 2015

Great Work, as long as we’re taking the hobbits!

  • JWood Mar 02, 2015

ummmmmmmmmm “On the road to Isengard our developers will continue to focus on removing old legacy code, usability and user friendliness.”

    • kib Mar 02, 2015

Nice find, that one slipped trough the cracks. I’ve modified the sentence to properly reflect what we were trying to say.

  • JNRW Mar 02, 2015

In the whole scheme of things this request is very minor, but is it possible that the Kodi icons relating to Isengard on both Android and Windows can be the same as on the main home page, ie brown?

    • Martijn Mar 02, 2015

The splash screen won’t stay like this. Final version will have the normal one again.
Too much work to change it all

      • JNRW Mar 02, 2015

        Thank you for your reply.

I think it would be a shame because I really like the Isengard logo design.

I personally take this opportunity to thank you all at Kodi for all your work for the benefit of so many around the whole world.

  • Yousty Mar 02, 2015

Will Dolby Atmos support be added in Isengard?

  • Woerd88 Mar 02, 2015

Damn, my android tablet has Android 4.1 ……
Do you think it will be easy for me to compile Kodi for a previous API level?
(And take the risk that some stuff won’t work?)

Or would you suggest to keep Kodi v14 on it?

    • Kib Mar 02, 2015

      Keep Kodi 14.

    • da-anda Mar 08, 2015

  • Piotr Mar 03, 2015

I’m having one peculiar issue since “Helix”: On one of my 3 PCs I cannot start any add-on.
I can install addons, get updates, change settings, but when I try to launch them, “Working” appears and that’s it. Have tried a fresh install, then an update to today’s nightly build 15.0 Alpha-2, but the problem persists.
Has anyone experienced this / what’s the “trick” to get the add-ons running again?

“Last year we shocked the community and the world with the announcement of our name change. Now some months later we are happy to see that a lot of people have adopted this change and embraced what is now know as Kodi.”

LOL and lmao : did we have any other choice? Yeah right “Kodi” is more “friendly” then “XBMC”, but still for my taste that logo looks more like some health insurance company. Whatever…

    • KIb Mar 07, 2015

      Yep, whatever.

  • Speedy Mar 05, 2015

Love the new Kodi! I was just wondering is at some point you will be updating the LIBRTMP file. It is easy to update on my computer, but I have not had any luck on my unrootable FireTv. A lot of links that will play on my computer will not on the firetv with the outdated Librtmp file. Thanks in advance.

  • Darren Mar 05, 2015

Why not API 16 for Android? Is there compatibility issues or is that just the API version that one of the devs thought would be a good cut off point? Android 4.1.x is a still Jelly Bean and it’s still on a lot of devices. It shouldn’t even increase the size of the APK by much to support API 16 as the minimum.

  • Memphiz Mar 06, 2015

I can assure you that all SDK and runtime bumps where carefully chosen for multiple reasons (this includes osx, ios and android).

  • Derel Mar 06, 2015

Awesome, love the name change anyway as i first used this on an xbox orig. so XBMC wasnt really relevant anymore :) Been using it ever since, many years.

Have donated in the past and will do again when funds allow, have huge respect for the time you put into this i only wish i contribute but im no coder.

    Thanks d.

  • daniko Mar 07, 2015

are very satisfied with this program, is super, but I still want some thing about it ,namely a longer power to customize the original skin and flicker problem when playing back on a second screen ( AMD Radeon 5450 video card , for example ),perhaps I may not make correct settings !?
the rest is excellent and I have only praise for those who did and still doing this program for us.
    Thanks and all the best

well they should be fixed as well :P
      improved sentence though.

Love the alpha, especially the new skip step system. However, I can’t play WMV files on my Fire TV Stick. Kodi immediately crashes and exits whenever I try to open one up. No such issues with Helix.

love kodi, its getting better and better. one request though – please update librtmp with latest patch for unrooted android users.

I tried this and had a major issue with this on Android TV Box. Very often the screen would get masked by a grey box with the actual picture visible a couple of inches on both sides. The audio was fine. I would have to restart XBMC to resolve and it would recur after sometime.

I unistalled and went back to 14.1 and is running fine.

Were you able to find a solution for Airplay mirroring using iOS 8?

As you know, it is not working with v14 Helix.

Please fix that, we need that :)

    • Rock Hammer Mar 19, 2015

Airplay is working in Helix RC1 Android, except Youtube app. Blame Google for that. HTH

  • Jeffers Mar 19, 2015

Does version 15.0 alpha1 include all the updates applied to 14.2RC?
How are v15 and v14 releases kept in synch?

  • Blurayx Mar 21, 2015

    system: os x 10.10.3

build date 21-2-2015 works ok, but crashes when trying to add kodi repository.

  • Tom Mar 22, 2015

Is the skin ace available for 15? I don’t seem to see it?

  • Shane Mar 23, 2015

Kodi is absolutely superb, and I’d also like to add my voice to those asking for ordered chapters and segment linking for mkv files in the future. Be icing on a very fine cake. :)

  • Tom Mar 24, 2015

On kodi 15 alpha & tried adding metal kettle, when I see the folder in install from zip and open it, there is nothing inside? Not sure if this is a kodi 15 issue or metal kettle issue?
Also does 15 alpha receive any updates?

  • Michael Mar 25, 2015

Will you add support for external audio tracks for video? Really miss this feature.

  • Mark Mar 26, 2015

  • vel2000 Mar 27, 2015

The ability of caching/buffering and pausing HLS Live-Streams would be nice.

  • Little Johnny Hooper Apr 01, 2015

Must be time for a new release. Let’s have it then.

  • Little Johnny Hooper Apr 01, 2015

Yep, just as I thought, alpha 2 has been posted.

When it comes to programming and codes..I don’t mess with that. What I do is buy amazon tv boxes already programmed and resell them. About 60 a month on my spare time.

So the question I get a lot is regarding PPV issues. UFC and Boxing. What is the best stream to enjoy these live events?

Beside that everyone loves Kodi base on how many more boxes they request for friends and family

I missed the great new feature that is External subtitles over UPnP in here. PR 6184
