Kodi 15.0 Isengard – Beta 1

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on May 01, 2015 in Pre-Release

Here it is, the first beta build for Kodi 15.0; freshly baked and ready to be served! We could call Kodi 15.0 a “clean-up” edition due to the lack of any prominent features and due to the massive spring cleaning we have been doing during the past months. Although some nice new features have been added, the majority of work was done cleaning up the vast complexity of code that was built up over the years. We still have a long way to go.

Some of you might feel that we are releasing the new beta quite soon after the 14.x stable releases, however this is part of our plan. We intend to release more often with smaller features. This way the changes are more manageable and we can quicker squash any bugs that get left behind into next release.

Let’s talk about what we’ve done.

Improvements so far

There were about 780 requests that contained multiple fixes, features, and improvements that went into the current 15.0 beta release. All these changes should sum up in an even better user experience while using Kodi. We could start summing up all the changes but there’s really no point in doing so. Instead we will make a quick selection of the most important changes done during past months.

  • * Reworked add-on manger that should give a better overview
  • * Chapter selection window that shows thumbs on where to skip to in the video
  • * Easier to navigate audio and subtitle selection list
  • * Addition of language add-ons which allow us to update the User-Interface text outside of regular releases
  • * Expansion of international options like time and date format, temperature and speed units.
  • * Skip steps (step forward & backwards) improvements.
  • * Tuxbox removal. Users of Enigma2 boxes can use the VUPlus PVR add-on
  • * Split PVR add-ons into separate projects which should allow updates through repo in the future
  • * Fix season art scraping on newly added seasons
  • * Immediately fetch updates from repository after Kodi version upgrade
  • * Improvement of installing new skins selection
  • * Remove legacy code pre-Frodo 11.0
  • * Add jump to first unwatched in TV section
  • * Remove certain codecs from our core code and made add-ons out of them. Audio encoders/decoders
  • * Removal of AFP filesystem support
  • * Windows DXVA HEVC hardware decoding support if driver and hardware support exist
  • * Added adaptive seeking through audio and video playback, also know as “skip steps”
  • * Android HEVC H.265 support for some chipsets
  • * Improve webserver caching control
  • * External subtitles over UPnP can be enabled through the settings section
  • * Allow scanning of new sources and marking as watched during other library operations such as “update library”
  • * Allow different sort orders for different sort methods
  • * Start of integration binary add-ons and changing the build system around it
  • * Improved CC (Closed Captions) support for Live TV
  • * ffmpeg 2.6.2 update
  • * Removal remaining SDL code which was used in some areas.
  • * Changed code to  C++11
  • * Variety of memleaks, segfaults, crashes and minor issues fixed
  • * Rescrape season art for newly added seasons
  • * Upgrade included webserver which should fix issues with remotes loosing connections
  • * On Android the system now handles the volume
  • * General improvements regarding code stability and performance in all areas
  • * General code clean-up in all areas to simplify adding future features
  • * Mac OSX
    • - Minimal 10.7 Lion required
    • - Only OSX 64-bit builds provided by us, so no more 32bit builds
    • - Minimal MacOSX 10.10 SDK
  • * iOS
    • - Minimal iOS 5.1 required
    • - Minimal iOS 8.1 SDK
    • - No more ATV2 builds
  • * Android
    • - Minimum Android 4.2 Jelly Bean MR1 required
    • - Android API 17 as minimum with SDK 14 and NDK 10e
    • - Removed the need for root/SU on Android. Some hardware/firmware might not like that. Please contact your hardware supplier
    • - Android PIL packaging fixed

and much more…

For some more in depth views on some of the features you can read the following blogs we wrote concerning the Alpha releases:

General: So far in 15.0 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham and in Helix then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work. It could be that not all PVR add-ons are fully adjusted and updated, though the developers will do their best to be ready for final release.

Skins: As of this moment, all skins that worked in Helix should still work in 15.0 Isengard. In the PVR sections there are certain changes that might be noticeable and need specific skin changes. These changes are minimal and shouldn’t cause any major problems in usability. We’re sure that most skin creators will be updating the skins in due time. Before that happens you should be able to enjoy this beta build without any problems.

We need your help

With every release there comes a point where we as a team think we’re ready enough to call it “beta” and work our way to make it a final release. From this point on we need you, the users to help test the builds we publish and report any problems you may encounter. As we are only a limited group of people who also use Kodi in their spare time, we are limited in the ways we can use and test Kodi to the full extent. We are grateful to the devoted users who have already helped us testing the alpha builds on day to day basis. Having many thousands more running and testing this beta we can hopefully work out some of the remaining issues that lie within our power.

Should you want to download and install this beta build please visit our download page.

After the beta release you can also install the nightly versions we build each day.

Other Software

In addition to creating Kodi, the members of Team Kodi have created official remotes to be installed on your tablet or phone.

Kore™ (Android) Official Kodi Remote (iOS)
org.xbmc.kore Official Kodi Remote (iOS)

Like Kodi™ itself, both official remotes are free and open source software.

Get involved

Getting involved is quite easy. Simply take the plunge and start using these 15.0 Isengard builds. If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after that, if asked, submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support to other users in our Forums where you can, or donate to the XBMC Foundation if you like. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.

    Great job guys!

So does the removal of Android root requirement set us on the path towards availability in Google Play? That would be so great

    • not important May 07, 2015

you can already get kodi on google play its called apk files check them out

  • ianjo May 01, 2015

Thanks to all the kodi devs! Happy user since the xbox1 days :)

P.s: You seem to have forgotten to add the play store and app store links :)

    • Martijn May 01, 2015

      Thx. Fixed the links

  • sparklyballs May 01, 2015

is mysql support for shared libraries still in isengard or has it been phased out ?

    • Martijn May 01, 2015

Still supported. Do note database version are changed

    • c May 01, 2015

Will mysql support be phased out eventually???

      • Anthony May 02, 2015

Certainly hope not! I depend on MySQL support!

      • Kib May 04, 2015

The idea has always been to at one point in the future drop support for MySQL, but – as we have stated multiple times – this will not happen until we have an alternative which is better in every way.

No need to worry yet, it’s not happening any time soon.

        • C May 04, 2015

          Thanks. That is reassuring!

        • artur May 14, 2015

I hope mySQL will stay as long as possible, since i just started using it, and its great!!

  • Khalid May 01, 2015

Wow! Great job and awesome news …

What a start in the new month :)

  • Danny3 May 01, 2015

It would be nice if you could fix my bug report before the final release
It should take less than 5 minutes

    Thank you

  • Zecure May 01, 2015

Is the OpenSSL version updated too for the Windows version so SSL handshaking could start to work with hostnames instead of ip?

  • MarkCwee May 01, 2015

    Awesome work ppl.

Please, add Official Remote for Kodi (Windos Phone)

    • Kib May 05, 2015

We are waiting for a Windows PhoneOS developer to write a remote, make the code open source and work with us. This is how Kore became the official Android remote recently.

At this moment we have no Windows Phone developers on our team.

      • FutureCow May 09, 2015

I think this is one of the best open source remotes for kodi:

      • Anon May 11, 2015

With windows 10 and the new SDKs for Android and iOS developer you should compile the android and iOS version with minimal modifications as a Windows Universal App.

        • Martijn May 12, 2015

          Yeah right.

  • Mike L May 02, 2015

Great work guys!! I just updated my Windows 7 PC to beta1 and it is so much faster and smoother than previous versions.

  • JCole May 02, 2015

Tried this on my Nexus Players. This seems to be the snappiest release so far on this platform. (Android x86)

  • theguardian May 02, 2015

Looks like the linux builds have been failing: https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive/ubuntu/unstable

    • Kib May 05, 2015

Thanks for the heads-up, this has since been fixed.

  • zeroryouko May 02, 2015

Hmmm…can’t seem to upgrade successfully in Linux, looks like the package build is failing according to launchpad.net.

  • zeroryouko May 02, 2015

Can’t upgrade – Launchpad reports amd64 build failure due to missing libplatform-dev…?

  • chris joyson May 02, 2015

th videos/files section has changed for the worst it is now the same as the library section, in the past the files actually showed the file structure similar to explorer.

Is there an option to change this back?

Otherwise keep up the good work.

    • da-anda May 02, 2015

files section is unchanged to my knowledge

  • Radar May 02, 2015

Or this bug also before final release.

  • bossanov808 May 02, 2015

Please create a beta release thread so we can add issue reports to it, like this MySQL upgrade one:

  • Anthony May 02, 2015

Would love to see a Windows 10 Universal app that could run across Windows Phone and tablets.

    • ThoR May 11, 2015

  • Noam Gal May 02, 2015

I can’t seem to upgrade on ubuntu. I get

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kodi : Depends: libgnutls26 but it is not installable or
libgnutls28 but it is not installable
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

Seems like something is broken in there.
I have already upgraded my windows machine, and I use a shared MySQL library, so I need both instances to run the same version.

  • Agarus May 02, 2015

Looking good, but with the comment about the MySQL upgrade issue, I will have to wait for Beta 2. I would love to help and test for you guys after that.

  • Bart Otten May 02, 2015

The addon manager is now looking muchhhh better than in the Alpha’s. However, the option to Force Refresh is still unavalailable….

    • da-anda May 02, 2015

In Confluence it’s in the sideblade – other skins need to adopt this change first.

  • Nezza May 02, 2015

Great news on the update, Any news on game emulators yet?

    • da-anda May 02, 2015

Retroplayer is shaping up, but still some work to do. Chances are not too bad that it’ll be added in v16

  • Mikael Konradsson May 02, 2015

I can’t get TVHeadend to work with this version (OS X nor in Ubuntu)?
    How do I enable TV-pvr?

    • Yoshi May 03, 2015

I have the same problem on OSX. Dependencies not met is the message…

  • Schindler May 02, 2015

Will the final version be released at the end of this year?

  • Mamia May 02, 2015

Hallo nothing work now with me please I need he’ll to aces se in my tv thanks

  • cowboykuya May 03, 2015

Will Kodi work on an Samsung Chromebook? If yes what OS do I use to define? I tried Android and Windows both didnot work!pls help…I have XBMC running very well on my Dell Latitude E43xx but it doesnt have a HDMI out port.

  • Mati May 03, 2015

When you will add a function of double frame rate ? When you watch a 30fps movie processor make double frame and on the screen you see 60fps with smooth motions. With this funcion kodi will hawe ewerythink.

  • KMUS May 03, 2015

    Thank you!

I am using Kodi with the TVHeadend git-version on Ubuntu 14.04.2 LTS with kernel 3.18.x and it works like a charm.

Time to donate for this project some Euros.

  • SL May 03, 2015

Long term fan and donater to the cause

Go back to the old dev cycle. 14 was a bloody mess and it’s only just usable in the last month or two, now you’re rushing to 15?
    Stop it.

    • Martijn May 03, 2015

If you don’t like it you can always keep running 13.x until you want to upgrade.
      We don’t rush anything.

      • SL May 25, 2015

The state that 14 launched in, says otherwise.
Also, I know not all the staff are onboard with this rushed release thing.

    • Kib May 04, 2015

I’m guessing you are talking about unofficial add-ons that aren’t working. I can assure you that the Kodi versions not only been working fine, many features were added as well.

If you don’t like upgrades, then do not upgrade.

    • Yeadon Smith May 06, 2015

I totally agree. Fix the bugs in one version before moving to the next!

  • mysecond May 03, 2015

Excelent work, also since Xbox 1 days, without missing any version :-)

    - please add an internal function to clean unused (actor, cover, and so on) pictures from the library (eg: when I delete a movie, and database is updated, the unused pictures should be deleted)
    - covers/actor pictures database/library: there are hundreds/thousands of pictures, and most devices become slow. Is it possible to change the “single file” system to one dynamic big file (like truecrypt did) where all that files are put there? (4GB limit, then would be a second file created)

I think one MAJOR issue with Kodi are those library/cover/actor pictures, that in a matter of months are too many, excessive weight on every HDD/SSD.

Also Add-Ons are “custom” and some of them have hundreds of files, non-optimized pictures/videos. If possible create a “Kodi Add-Ons Guidelines Certificate” where only the Add-ons with limit amount of pictures (jpg, png) and videos (<1MB, h264) could receive such stamp.

Kodi runs not only on "standard high-performance" devices, but also on small android dual-core sticks, with limited flash speed and amount, which is fantastic, but these TWO issues (database and add-ons) dramatically reduce the devices/Kodi speed in a matter of months.

    • bvn May 03, 2015

I would not want my experience on a 55″ 1080p HTPC setup limited by a cheaper rpi/android stick limitation. I would want them to “certify” add-ons are using high quality, high resolution images. You see, you cannot satisfy everyone.

      • lte001 May 03, 2015

Alternatively you could just delete the textures.db and thumbnails folder like everyone else does in that situation. Which takes all of 30 seconds, doesn’t require any coding and gives you utterly nothing to bitch about.

  • ark May 03, 2015

Thanks for work ! But after upgrade to v15, submenus have no more text, and lot of menus like in system menu are also invisible. (with aeon)
anyone else has this bug ?

    • Kib May 04, 2015

Revert back to confluence during the upgrade.
Check if there is an updated version of the skin you are using, because that is a ‘I didn’t update my skin’ issue.

  • Mike May 03, 2015

Only Thing to Say: Thank you very much! Great Job!!!!

  • Arinoth May 04, 2015

Upgrading from Helix 14.0 and it seems to hang whenever I launch it. Checking Task Manager shows it using 50% cpu usage.

Downgraded to a working Helix 14.2 until this gets resolved. I hope its an isolate issue for just me.

  • Rocker May 04, 2015

Do you know if QR codes exist for the Kodi official remote apps?

Some QR code generators even offer single universal QR code.

Nice to have a QR code for both Android and iOS remote apps.

    • Kib May 06, 2015

      Nice idea, added both.

  • weak May 04, 2015
  • Gerard May 04, 2015

Do you know if it works well in a 1st gen ouya?

    • Martijn May 04, 2015

Nope, the android version is too low to install.

      • VIDEOgameDROME May 12, 2015

yeah, I couldn’t get it to install. I get a ‘error parsing’ message when I tried. :(

  • willem May 04, 2015

I love that this new version is coming along so soon. I guess a code clean up might really be necessary after all these years. The changes / new features are also appreciated. And just having new ffmpeg, new pvr plugin versions etc. is really welcome.

However, the small changes there are also cause some skins to stop functioning (I’m using Aeon MQ5) which stops me from trying out the beta. And people not switching may not motivate the skin makers to adapt their skin. I guess that’s a chicken-or-the-egg paradox. What to do, what to do..

    • Kib May 05, 2015

There is a modified version of that skin on the forum which works with Isengard.

    • Avinash May 05, 2015

I face the same problem than Mr. willem…The Aeon MQ5 doesn’t work properly… so, for me along the years the combination XBMC/Kodi and Aeon Skin is like water and hydrogen… but… the hope is immortal! Someday it’ll works.

      • willemd May 05, 2015

Yeah, I found out that on the Aeon MQ forum (here on the Kodi site) someone named scott967 posted an updated version of MQ5 for Isengard. Same day as our comments above. I tried it for a few minutes, seems to work splendidly!

  • allan May 05, 2015

Anyone in Coventry that does upgrades

  • Ben May 05, 2015

This is the best release for Android ever. Pvr now works like a dream. I can only say… People on Minix x8.. Install this realease. Thank you for Kodi. Love it.

    • Eddy-B May 08, 2015

I Agree, works like a charm on a minix neo-X8.

  • subcell May 05, 2015

broked my sound. is it because im using a DP1.2

    going back to 14.2

    • fritsch May 06, 2015

Without any logs, bugreport – you will be happy to have that very same bug in final v15.

  • Antonio Miranda May 06, 2015

So, in v15.0 beta1 there is no Portuguese-Brazil option in Default Subtitle Language to Download???

  • Rick May 06, 2015

PVR Add-ons are not showing up under Mac where as they are under Windows. Also the dutch translation (and I am guess others) are mixed up with english translations. Other than that the speed is outstanding and the new features are looking really good! Thanks for this great preview and looking forward to the official release! Will be donating again very soon because this is by far the best piece of software I have ever used. Thanks again!

  • Steven May 06, 2015

For those of us using the Raspberry Pi 2, could we have a more straightforward way to use external drives, a MicroSD only holds so much.

    • nedscott May 19, 2015

Kodi fully supports USB HDDs on the Raspberry Pi. It should even automatically mount them and list them in the files node under “Videos”.

  • Dave May 06, 2015

Hi, thanks very much for the beta release, great work as always. One quick question–I see in the changelog this sentence: “Android HEVC H.265 support for some chipsets”. I have a FireTV, so I’m wondering if its chipset will be one of the ones that is supported. I’ve been trying to find somewhere on the forum where the HEVC support is discussed, just out of curiosity, but for some reason I must be missing it….?

    • Nathan Betzen May 07, 2015

Almost certainly not. We can’t add support to chipsets that don’t have it. If the hardware provider advertises support (AML s805 and NVIDIA Shield Console are both examples of this), then support is either in place or more likely in the future.

  • Charlie Allen May 06, 2015

the programs are always zoomed in. I can’t get it to fit the screen properly…any help???

    • Nathan Betzen May 07, 2015

You should post in the forum. It sounds like your view mode is messed up, but it’s hard to say how to fix it without knowing what your input options are.

    • Reece Jun 09, 2015

i also have this problem i have it installed on a m8 tv box and the picture is always zoomed in???!!! if you find a solution can you please let me know or looks like i will have to downgrade back to 14.2 helix.

  • rnegri May 07, 2015

What about ASIO driver in KODI? Should be included in new Isengard version?
Is there a any news……as I know currently there is just audio option just for Direct Sound and WASAPI…..

    BTW….if I want to listen 192KHz audio, I must use Foobar2000!?

    Thanks in advance,

  • Yahoo May 07, 2015

Hi, great build. Just one question – where can I find External subtitles over UPnP in Settings? Thank you.

  • Petitcanard May 07, 2015

Hello, wonderfull app, is my alone app on tv box android, but i realy need this function : power down / shutdown / sleep … plz help me

  • dcrdev May 08, 2015

Are there any plans for a more modern confluence skin? It’s not changed since Frodo and is beginning to look a bit dated. I’ve tried other skins but found them all to be over the top.

  • BAM May 09, 2015

    * Add jump to first unwatched in TV section

Hoping this will work like I think, let me open the context menu on an episode in the Recently Added list and find the first unwatched of that series when a few have piled up.

  • sparklyballs May 09, 2015

Will this version (15 itself, not specfically this beta) have the headless capability or not ?

  • ralf May 09, 2015

will kodi 15 Support MKV-MVC, finally? That’s the most important feature for me, this time.

  • Joe May 10, 2015

I hope for plans on a bit of eye candy spicing up the music section. What about some Winamp like skinning so us music lovers can enjoy vu-meters, spinning records, tape decks? The ability to simulate home stereo systems would be great. Keep up the good work. I’m enjoying your work since Dharma.

    • Kib May 11, 2015

One of the team members is almost finished with implementing shadertoy based visualisations for music, which would make it possible for people to develop visualisations at shadertoy.com, and then simply start using them within Kodi. I’m pretty sure what you describe would be possible as well.

  • Lucas Hicks May 11, 2015

Just stays at the splash screen. Nothing happens. And my old Kodi setup was nothing special, straight out of the box running confluence.

  • JDizzy May 11, 2015

Using the 5.95.1 version of OpenElec and for some reason when I go to Addons there is no option for Visualizations. I am looking for ProjectM (linux) but nothing is available through Addons?
Don’t know what the problem may be……

  • artur May 14, 2015

When will retroplayer be added to Kodi?

  • Michael May 14, 2015

was using the xbmc_env.properties file on Android to locate kodi data folder to USB stick it doesn’t work anymore on 15 will this be reimplemented?

    • nedscott May 19, 2015

Nothing has changed for that setting and it should still work under v15.

  • Avadhesh Bagla May 14, 2015

Guys hyperion download on Ssh not working on kodi on Raspberry pi2,some certificates issue, had to go back to kodi Helix from isengard beta1…..any ideas how to solve or any future fix for this?

  • Mark May 15, 2015

Will this version support Blu Ray menus? I have Dragon’s Lair that refuses to work with all versions so far …

  • buddy May 17, 2015

Will there be a version with built in screen mirror to smart tv through allshare or dnla

  • buddy May 17, 2015

Will there be a version with built in screen mirror to smart tv through allshare or dnla or with the little screen icon like you tube

  • Shelle May 17, 2015

I just wanted to say a quick thank you to all the developers. Admittedly my use of features is limited; I only use Kodi to play video files stored on my own PC or the local network, but it rocks, thanks! :)

This release feels so much more responsive…

Normally I’d notice a slight pause as the program first opened, however this version makes it obvious that I actually do have it installed on a SSD! I don’t know what changed to cause the speed improvement in that way, but it’s a case of very well done.

Once again, thanks to all involved. :)

  • Zucki May 18, 2015

Does the external subtitles over UPnP work for anyone? I was unable to get the system use the external subtitles via DLNA.
Is there any extra setting where I can turn it on?

    • Martijn May 18, 2015

      It’s a setting

      • Zucki May 21, 2015

Can you be a little more specific, please? Where can I find this setting, as there is no option to turn it on under subtitles settings (expert mode)

  • silvereyes May 18, 2015

Large fonts in kodi 14 was a great feature, but it doesn’t work on international characters. Please address that.

Thanks to all the developers for these great programs, just a little note to this one I’m using a customised skin and on this kodi I can no longer use the search function in any of my addons , also unable to go to the settings on many to input my login details it just does nothing when you press to input your details . This is on every addon I use this would be great to have fixed.

Thank You all dev’s for excellent work!!!

Are there any planned changes and/or updates for either picture/image management or database support?

  • willem nl May 30, 2015

More finesse in the picture / slideshow department would be much appreciated, yeah! Loving Kodi for video though. :)

  • Timbergetter May 31, 2015

I have now looked at Isengard hoping to see an option that would allow the playing of a multi-cd album, without breaking the experience into discrete disks. Unfortunately this ability appears to be still not present. It is telling that Plex has finally realized that this feature is highly desirable if not essential and has included it in its latest release this month.

To be clear, this feature would allow the playing of say a 5 disk album starting on the first track of the first disk and continuing without intervention to the final track on the 5th disk.

    • Martijn May 31, 2015

I use that all the time and it works just fine. Just properly tag you mp3 files so it reads out disk number

      • Timbergetter May 31, 2015

I’m not sure what you mean by ‘.. so it reads out disk number’. My objective is to avoid any prompting for which disk is needed.

My tagging scheme involves numbering Track tags contiguously from 1 to N where N is last track number on last CD. I make sure the Album tag is identical on every file. I do have a separate directory for each disk in the album. In my experience with Kodi I always need to select a directory before I can navigate to a file. If you are able to play the whole album without having to select each directory / disk number in turn then I’d be keen to know what tagging scheme / directory scheme you use.

Have anyone put 15.0 on Amazon Fire Stick ? If so, how do you like it ? Thanks

  • bfarley68 Jun 01, 2015

The OSX version has no support for PVRs. I had to go back to 14.2. When you go into System/Addons/MyAddons there is no PVR section listed at all. Was this an oversight in OSX?

It is available in the Android build.

  • paul Aug 26, 2015

Why is it so hard to get a straight anwser? I just updated to the latest version of kodi via Google play store on my gbox q. Now there is the zoom issues on playback of any video. I’ve seen the queston asked a few times above. The common reply is to adjust the zoom. Well I will tell you after hours of getting the zoom adjusted for the video now the entire kodi menu is out of zoom. HOW DO WE GET BACK TO THE OLD VERSION PLEASE? So frustrating
