Kodi 15.1 Isengard – Release Candidate

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on Aug 10, 2015 in Pre-Release

Once a ‘final’ version is released some new bugs and/or problems usually appear out of nowhere, and last release was no exception. Even though tens of thousands of users were already testing the 15.0 version before release, as soon as million started using it, some problems we either did not think of or which we did not notice popped up. To counter some of these new issues, we’re bringing you this maintenance release candidate called 15.1 RC1 which has some additional fixes on top of the 15.0 release.
This is still a release candidate; once enough users have verified that these improvements work out well, and we did not introduce any major regressions, we’ll be releasing it as final 15.1 version. To be safe just backup your userdata (online manual) first.
It should be ok to just install this on top of your current Kodi 15.0 version. For the MySQL users out there; we never bump the database versions in our bugfix or maintenance releases – you can safely keep using it within your network.

We will continue to solve some remaining issues and release it as a next point release in the 15.x range.

Fixes done in this RC 1 version

  • • Flush renderbuffers when flushing video player
  • • Fix broken network.bandwidth setting

  • • Ensure that file descriptor for logfile is NULL’ed
  • • [pvr] fix holding lock while querying backend

The complete technical list can be found on our Github milestones.

Improvements so far in 15.0

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 15.0 release.

General: So far in 15.0 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham and in Helix then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: As of this moment, all skins that worked in 14.x Helix should still work in 15.0 Isengard. In the PVR sections there are certain changes that might be noticeable and need specific skin changes. These changes are minimal and shouldn’t cause any major problems in usability. There still might be some options still missing which you relied upon first. We’re sure that most skin creators will be updating the skins in due time. Before that happens you should be able to enjoy this beta build without any problems.

Windows 10

Users who have installed Windows 10 should make sure that they have the correct video card drivers installed. We see a lot of problems that have to do with this reported on the forum. It’s not something we as team can do anything about. Make sure you have updated all drivers according to the manufacturers website in case you are experiencing problems. Windows 10 has just been released and as such is still in active development. Another thing that might be helpful is installing the special Kodi 15.1 DirectX11 build which is mentioned a bit further down.

DirectX 11 upgrade (not included in 15.0 or 15.1)

DX11Although this release post is all about the 15.0 version, mentioning the DX11 upgrade for next version is very important. Since switching from OpenGL in 2009, Kodi (and XBMC in the past) has used the DirectX 9 implementation for various tasks of rendering the user interface and media playback. This almost dates back to the XBOX days. With the hardware industry moving and focussing more on the newer DX11 with their drivers, more people have problems with running our outdated DX 9 version. This could range from simply not starting, crashing just after loading, playing videos or having problems with hardware acceleration. One of our developers afedchin took on this task and completely revised our DirectX 9 implementation and upgraded it to the more current standard of DirectX 11. Don’t worry if you still have an older card, we only use low level features so you don’t need to run to the shop for new gear. If you are having problems on Windows you can head to our forum where you can find the most recent build available which is currently based on our 15.0 release. We appreciate all the feedback we can get. Read more: here on our forum. Again this will not be part of our 15.x releases. It has already been successfully merged into our future 16.0 release.

Should you want to download and install this build please visit our download page.

Other Software

In addition to creating Kodi, the members of Team Kodi have created official remotes to be installed on your tablet or phone.

Kore™ (Android) Official Kodi Remote (iOS)
org.xbmc.kore Official Kodi Remote (iOS)

Like Kodi™ itself, both official remotes are free and open source software.

Get involved

Getting involved is quite easy. Simply take the plunge and start using these 15.0 Isengard builds. If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after that, if asked, submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support to other users in our Forums where you can, or donate to the XBMC Foundation if you like. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.

      • David P. Aug 22, 2015

I’m having the same problem David, Kodi 14.2 works perfect but 15, 15.1 and 15.1.1 incorrectly scales the video in playback (small in top left quarter on TV) Had the same problem with Kodi 14 until it was fixed in 14.2.

I’m running Kodi on M6 Android TV Media Box
        GPU is a Mali-400mp, CPU is a Armv7 Processor rev0 (v7l) and OS is Android 4.2.2

  • Adam Aug 10, 2015

I will need to test it to see if the bad stutter when playing dts or Dolby surround over passthrough has been solved. Sure hope so ’cause Kodi is brilliant otherwise.

  • Khalid Aug 10, 2015

    Great update!!

  • Craig Aug 10, 2015

Project M visualiser still not working on Mac.

  • Big Aug 10, 2015

when clicking in the timeline while watching videos to play forward, the video freezes and kodi hangs up since 15.0. in 15.1 it is still not fixed.

    • icla Aug 20, 2015

I have the same issue (minix x8-h plus)

  • Brad Aug 10, 2015

I was recommended to your page and cannot find the how to download to my iPad mini which I believe is supported. Any ideas?

  • J876 Aug 11, 2015

I hope you guys got rid of the autoscan for TV/PVR servers from this release (I have put a post in the forum already) or at leas an option to disable it in the System settings or TV settings menus.

Otherwise, Isengard is pretty good so far.

Thanks for all your hard work!

  • marcus Aug 11, 2015

    great work:)
hope dts-hd will come soon on mac OS X

  • Dennie Mahne Aug 11, 2015

Thanx You fixed my only problem with overlaping subs

  • renan Aug 11, 2015

subtitles always show on the bottom of the video and not below the video (over the black bar) for me, changing the setting doesn’t work, the subtitle wont show outside of the video. is that a bug or is it just on my system? Kodi 14.2 works fine here

    • cpl183 Aug 11, 2015

has been reported, doesn’t ssem to be looked at though.

    • luhan Aug 26, 2015

problem also happens to me, any solution?

  • Rakun Aug 12, 2015

Well done! Well done! Subtitles are now correct in PVR.

  • Pyromaniac Aug 12, 2015

Great work, thanks Kodi Team. But sadly I can’t run it on Windows 10 at the moment. Lets see when Nvidia and/or Microsoft gets its “new and great” Windows to work. :(

    • Adam Aug 12, 2015

I have Kodi running on multiple Windows 10 systems. Works just fine. Check your drivers if you’re having issues.

    • Anthony Aug 13, 2015

Nothing to do with Windows 10 which is working great for me across 3 different devices and most others. As mentioned in the initial post, the problems are almost definitely related to your video drivers. Ensure you have the latest. if you are using an ancient (>4 years) chipset on a laptop or something, then you may need to review options if nVidia don’t fix driver issues. Also ensure you try the DX11 build (again, as discussed in original post!)

  • Mark Aug 12, 2015

I have a few ‘problem’ HEVC files (720p). With 15.0, these files display ‘garbage video’ for the first 10-15 seconds, but then play normally after that – this would be about 5% of my entire HEVC collection – the other 95% play flawlessly.

However, on v15.1 RC1, these same problem files only play sound. I’m using an Amlogic S812 android TV box (model CX-S806) and have amcodec set on in the Kodi settings.

Please accept my appreciation for your work. v15.0 Isengard was a major step forwards in HEVC playback and I realise that this is still a new codec and don’t expect the issues to go away anytime soon.

  • NINO Aug 12, 2015

I am running 15.1 RC on an M8 android box with silence rom and it is running amazing! Great job guys! Cant wait to see what’s next! My only issue has been every few videos it reboots the the box. Going to upload my log and see if anyone has any suggestions on the forums. Other then that, everything is awesome!

Thanks for all your hard work!

  • Stefan Aug 12, 2015

Good work :) …Thank you so much.

  • Mitchell Aug 13, 2015

Does it work on ouya yet? The other did not.

  • kikassridec2 Aug 13, 2015

    15.1 rc1, windows 10 pro x64,

seems to always configure back to direct sound from wsapi for some reason so everytime need to change/enable passthrough in system settings not major just a small annoyance anyone else having this small problem?

  • Stefan Aug 13, 2015

Windows 10 have crap sound for moviewatching because they builded in a Sorround thing that can’t be shut off and movies sound like a cam when you play them in Kodi or in VLC or whatever……You can see that when you right click your speaker info….So I have left Windows 10 and gone back to 8.1 because movies is everything for me.

  • kikassridec2 Aug 13, 2015

    @ stefan

sound seems fine to me using windows 10 just seems to default back on that particular setting..? hopefully a fix on the next build..

    • Stefan Aug 17, 2015

@kickassridec2 …Well am glad sound atleast seams fine for you……but that default problem is not happening at my end……Maybe a Windows 10 driver bug causing it for you…..Have you tried driver update or clean Kodi Install? maybe check your add-ons too if the problem came after installing an add-on. ,Try the new release of Kodi and it might fix it…..Else I’m not sure what would cause your problem….if it is in fact Windows 10 then go back to 8.1 if it was what you used before and see if the problem go away.

  • Kurosh Aug 14, 2015

When will the Headless capability be implemented? I thought it was for Isengard? Particularly interested on Windows.

  • zefhit Aug 14, 2015

anyone know if subtitles over dlna on smart tvs is fixed???

  • Malcolm Aug 14, 2015

I have tried 15-1 Isengard RC and it is looking great as always kudos goes to all the Kodi Team for another great build.

I am not sure why it is on 15-1 that the splash.png get cropped though as it doesn’t on 15.0 but overall another great build, keep up the good work and looking forward to 16.0 Jarvis.

  • Tim2709 Aug 15, 2015

Thanks for all the hard work team, the dedication is outstanding.

I tried the one issue I had with 15.0 which was with not playing from a UpNP PVR and that still fails with error http 406 – any news on when that will be fixed?

  • Kristijan Aug 16, 2015

Android smb problem still exist. Can’t connect to windows shares, it doesn’t remember password. Kodi 14 works ok

  • Paul Aug 16, 2015

Has 15.1 final been released? My kodi was updated via Google play and it says 15.1 final but searching Google I don’t see anything about a final version being released.

As for how the update went, appears to work fine on my Samsung s4 and nexus 7 tablet but this 15.1 final update was a total mess on my mxq android tv box, when trying to use the seek bar the video would freeze for ages, eventually the sound would resume but the video image would remain frozen. I experienced this behaviour in multiple addons and different video files. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling kodi multiple times but still this seek issue remained.

I had to go back to 15.0 and now everything is back to working perfectly.

    • Mike Aug 19, 2015

Paul, I am having the same issue with my Matricom G box. Just wondering how you went back to Kodi 15.0 and did you lose your addons when doing this? Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Have the same problem with David P and David J. left portion of the video/display is cut. Can’t watch properly. My Android box is MXQ and am using a 55 inch TV. It was working fine under 14.2.

    Please help.

  • Lindsey revier Aug 31, 2015

I am running 15.1 on an mkx android box. the video playback is scaling the movies to only the top left of my screen. I’ve tried video calibration and looked all over of troubleshooting but falling short. All the settings options mentioned on the net do not exist in this version. Help! The very reason I use this is broken

    • Martijn Aug 31, 2015

      Get 15.2

  • Jamie Sep 01, 2015

How do I update kodi on the mxq box? I’m still running 14.2

  • ELX Sep 04, 2015

Why is it that all versions over 14.2Helix for Android ARM seem to not work when adding an smb client login password keeps popping up OVER n OVER n OVER!?

I updated from 14.2 only because of the constant crashes whenever I play any kind of video files sometimes even when starting it up the only good thing from that version was that it didnt gave me such BS logging into the smb client as the newer ones which the smooth navigating is a plus compare to the sluggish one but otherwise it makes no difference when one thing is fixed and another regressed to just a plain nuisance.

  • Scott Sep 04, 2015

I’m running an M8 Android box with 15.1, however the video playback on any of the add-ons is in the wrong position on the screen plus it seems to have zoomed the picture. I’ve tried looking for this issue in forms but no luck. I have the box hooked up by HDMI to a Sony 49″ 4K TV. I’ve tried changing the aspect setting on the TV with no luck either.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kodi is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.
