Kodi 15.2 Isengard – Final Chapter

Once a ‘final’ version is released some new bugs and/or problems usually appear out of nowhere, and last release was no exception. Even though tens of thousands of users were already testing the 15.0 version before release and we try very hard to prevent them, as soon as million started using it, some problems we either did not think of or which we did not notice popped up. To counter some of these new issues, we’re bringing you this second maintenance release 15.2 which has some additional fixes on top of the 15.0 and 15.1 release.

It should be ok to just install this on top of your current Kodi 15.0 or 15.1 version. For the MySQL users out there; we never bump the database versions in our bugfix or maintenance releases – you can safely keep using it within your network. To be safe just backup your userdata (online manual) first.

Most important fix done

Over time the Android version has travelled some bumpy roads. This is due to the fact there are tens of thousands of different devices out there with each it’s own Android version and each a slightly different firmware and hardware. Firmware is the part where the manufacturer of the device has to make sure the everything works as it should like audio and video output. This time after the 15.0 release it became clear that for several devices using an Amlogic chipset there was a change in firmware that caused Kodi to not function properly and only show a zoomed in or only used part of the screen. Devices that came from manufacturers that had properly updated their firmware did not have this problem. However for some this never happened and caused all the problems you might have experienced. One method was to put special build firmware on the device which fixes the problem and Kodi would just work fine again. Sadly this is a quite technical process and could brick your device if not done properly. Luckily a community developer invested a lot of time in tracking down the problem and together with our main Android developer came to a solution for fixing this.

In short, we’ve solved the problems for the users that had the zoomed in or partial screen using Kodi in Android. As such we included these changes into the 15.2 build for every one to test and hopefully get their device working again.

Secondly some playback problem popped up for many Android users where they lost video after fast-forward playback. This should now have been correct as well.

Fixes done in this 15.2 version

  • • Fix non DVB subtitles
  • • Fix incompatible MySQL queries
  • • Improvements on PulseAudio for Linux
  • • Fix multi images in grouplists/layouts
  • • Updated PVR add-ons: Tvheadend HTSP and MythTV
  • • Fix refresh-rate switching on Android. This should improve on most devices like Nexus Player and NVIDIA SHIELD TV and others which use the Android API

  • • Fix file time used in scanning library which may speed up scanning times on 32bit platforms
  • • Fix video rewind on Windows. May still leave artifacts for some seconds.
  • • Fix continues check on system partitions on Android
  • • Fix MicroDVD subtitles
  • • Fix subtitles positioning below video
  • • Fix memory leak on opening Bluray menu for stream selection
  • • Fix default sorting for songs over UPnP
  • • Updated taglib that fixes a crash when playing flac files
  • • Fix volume adjustment for XBOX controllers
  • • Fixes side flyout appearing when using touch
  • • Fixes freeze on win32 on away mode
  • • Fix crash on osx 10.7 when trying to resolve hdd names
  • • Fix Amlogic zoom problems on Android
  • • Set default screen region for dvb subs (wrong placed subtitles)
  • • Fix missing lyrics from tag when playing from musicdb url
  • • Properly set the time format when setting/changing regions
  • • Fix playback problems on AMLogic after ffwd or skip
  • • Fix fallback for nb_no language
  • • Fix empty LatestAlbum.Artist
  • • Fix watched flag in Confluence media info 3 view

The complete technical list can be found on our Github milestones.

Improvements so far in version 15

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 15 release.

Add-ons

General: So far in version 15 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham and in Helix then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: As of this moment, all skins that worked in 14.x Helix should still work in 15 Isengard. In the PVR sections there are certain changes that might be noticeable and need specific skin changes. These changes are minimal and shouldn’t cause any major problems in usability. There still might be some options still missing which you relied upon first. We’re sure that most skin creators will be updating the skins in due time. Before that happens you should be able to enjoy this beta build without any problems.

Windows 10 problems

Users who have installed Windows 10 should make sure that they have the correct video card drivers installed. We see a lot of problems that have to do with this reported on the forum. It’s not something we as team can do anything about. Make sure you have updated all drivers according to the manufacturers website in case you are experiencing problems. Windows 10 has just been released and as such is still in active development. Another thing that might be helpful is installing the special Kodi version 15 DirectX11 build which is mentioned a bit further down.

DirectX 11 upgrade (not included in 15.0 or 15.1)

DX11Although this release post is all about the 15.0 version, mentioning the DX11 upgrade for next version is very important. Since switching from OpenGL in 2009, Kodi (and XBMC in the past) has used the DirectX 9 implementation for various tasks of rendering the user interface and media playback. This almost dates back to the XBOX days. With the hardware industry moving and focussing more on the newer DX11 with their drivers, more people have problems with running our outdated DX 9 version. This could range from simply not starting, crashing just after loading, playing videos or having problems with hardware acceleration. One of our developers afedchin took on this task and completely revised our DirectX 9 implementation and upgraded it to the more current standard of DirectX 11. Don’t worry if you still have an older card, we only use low level features so you don’t need to run to the shop for new gear. If you are having problems on Windows you can head to our forum where you can find the most recent build available which is currently based on our 15.0 release. We appreciate all the feedback we can get. Read more: here on our forum. Again this will not be part of our 15.x releases. It has already been successfully merged into our future 16.0 release.

On Nvidea shield it’s not possible to update to 15.2.

On PC play store it is available but remains waiting, on TV play store it’s not available.

Great jog guys! Just in time for my Shield that arrives today!

  • Chris00780 Oct 19, 2015

So the Fire TV gen 1 on Fire OS 5 supports 1080p @ 24Hz. Can Kodi take advantage of this or is refresh rate switching only working on the Shield Android TV and Nexus player?

    • Martijn Oct 19, 2015

Should work on devices that support it

      • Chris00780 Oct 19, 2015

Does the TVHZ app need to be installed? I guess the only way to get the gen 1 Fire TV into 1080p @24Hz is in some odd remote button combo that brings up a hidden menu. I am not sure if this is the reason as to why it isn’t working on Kodi. I have yet to try it on 15.2

        • Hans Oct 19, 2015

Do you use Live TV with tvheadend in 1080p on your fire tv? Indepentend from the codec configuation it crashes twice an hour

iOS 9.0.2 iPhone 6s plus: It will start and you can add zip-Files but it seems there is a Problem with the Filemanager. I can not “Add Source”. I push or hold the button, but nothing happens.

Is there / Knows anyone a Workaround?

    • David B. Oct 26, 2015

Instead of just pushing or holding the “Add Source” button, try tapping/clicking it twice. In the past, I have found the “Add Source” button is the only one in the set-up/configuration/install from zip file process that requires two taps to get a response.

  • Ammoh Oct 20, 2015

    Awesome! Thanks for this guys!

  • Johan Oct 20, 2015

Since isengard update tv screen is upside down im using ipad4 with original apple hdmi connector.

I hope it get fixed soon this problem is well known because in earlier versions i had the same problem

  • tech123 Oct 20, 2015

    Android ARM version…

Since 15 and this version doesn’t appear to be an exception, the handling of 1080 broadcast source Kodi seems to try to display it as 720 content. This causes a blocky choppy picture especially in sports. Broadcast 720 content is actually SMOOTHER and less blocky. This is somewhat masked into looking somewhat good by the last of the 3 video accelerator codecs. Media something codec. This codec itself causes issues and in this Final version, when its on, you can’t view BlueRay ISOs as the picture is now simply black.

It odd, because the smoothest picture I get is actually turning off all three video accelerator codec and hoping the content is 720 as it appears to be just passed through. I would have thought that 1080 content would work equally as well, but like I said, it appears to down res for some reason.

The other annoying issue is the loss of some of the configuration at times. Many times when I go back into Kodi, I have to go back and Enable backend for TV.

My Android Box is a Matricom G-box Q w/ latest 1.4 firmware. HDHomeRuns for TV. NextPVR

I have none of these issues watching Netflix, etc. So what are the magic settings in Kodi to be able to watch something, especially sports without the stuttering and down res?

    • Jimmy Dean Oct 21, 2015

Matricom just wants you to get the GBOX Q, which is another disaster.

I have been using versions higher than 13.2 for a long time.

Their support staff has no idea what they are doing.

    • Razor109 Oct 24, 2015

720 broadcast is most likely progressive and the 1080 is i assume interlaced? Quite the diffrence actually.

  • Ryan Oct 20, 2015

Kodi installed on iPad, can mirror to atv3 AirPlay but is small on screen. When selecting display#2 it shows fullscreen on the tv but has a pop up window “save screen resolution yes/no” gesture swipes cannot select yes so after a few seconds it defaults back to the small screen. Any ideas? Otherwise damn what a program!

Why is the ARM apk version of “15.2″ I can download here (Git;2015-10-19-02e7013 “older” than the one which I get via the PlayStore (Git:2015-10-27-17fa8da)!?!

    • Martijn Oct 30, 2015

Because Play Store had problems and we had to make a new one

      • odoll Oct 30, 2015

Ah, ok, but the PlayStore version pretends to be 15.2 as well (and not 15.2.1 or 15.3) ;-)

I have a Streamax xbmc Box and after upgrading to the latest version of Kodi through my “MAX APP” which is a permanent application on the system, my menu screen was coming in just in the upper left corner of the TV Screen, I was dealing with it figuring the new version coming would fix this, then last night not only my menu but now the selected program was coming in corner size only, as well. I factory reset, erased everything rebooted, re-installed, re-downloaded, numerous times and I continue to revert back to Kodi Version, 14.2. No Streamax, apps! Don’t know what to do????

Iam using the kodi 15.2. while iam setting up the live tv — like this system-Tv- select the Enabled –
    now it shows that –
The PVR manager has been enabled without any enabled PVR add-on. Enable atleast one add-on to use the PVR functionality.
when pressing OK — it shows
PVR IPTV Imagenio Helix — disabled
    TCA1TV —- disabled

even when iam enabling both and after starting KODI again these messages came up like the same and thse two PVR’s are still disabed.

    can anyone help please.

when downloading 15.2 to my mac os, it downloads and all. Then it takes to me to the file and app screen. But when i connect to the fire stick and try to install the apk it only shows it greyed out and unable to click on it. My old 14.2 helix is still on there and I am able to install that one. So not sure what I did differently this time but it is annoying the hell out of me being that there is no other videos showing what I am looking for. The only videos I seem to fine are the ones to operate kodi on the mac. Very frustrating as I have tried everything. Again I am able to download the file and all but I am unable to click on it when trying to install the apk through the adb app.Help!!

Hi guys I’m trying to install kodi on to my Amazon fire stick but when downloading the kodi arm file for android onto my pc. It comes as a zipped file not an apk. If I extract it I still can’t see the apk. Do I just have to extract and then rename the file or am I missing something? Any help would be great

Why could this not be fixed completely? It worked fine in the 14.x builds?
