Kodi 15.2 Isengard – Release Candidate 3

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on Oct 04, 2015 in Pre-Release

Once a ‘final’ version is released some new bugs and/or problems usually appear out of nowhere, and last release was no exception. Even though tens of thousands of users were already testing the 15.0 version before release and we try very hard to prevent them, as soon as million started using it, some problems we either did not think of or which we did not notice popped up. To counter some of these new issues, we’re bringing you this second maintenance release candidate called 15.2 RC3 which has some additional fixes on top of the 15.0 and 15.1 release.

This is still a release candidate; once enough users have verified that these improvements work out well, and we did not introduce any major regressions, we’ll be releasing it as final 15.2 version. To be safe just backup your userdata (online manual) first.

It should be ok to just install this on top of your current Kodi 15.0 or 15.1 version. For the MySQL users out there; we never bump the database versions in our bugfix or maintenance releases – you can safely keep using it within your network.

Most important fix done

Over time the Android version has travelled some bumpy roads. This is due to the fact there are tens of thousands of different devices out there with each it’s own Android version and each a slightly different firmware and hardware. Firmware is the part where the manufacturer of the device has to make sure the everything works as it should like audio and video output. This time after the 15.0 release it became clear that for several devices using an Amlogic chipset there was a change in firmware that caused Kodi to not function properly and only show a zoomed in or only used part of the screen. Devices that came from manufacturers that had properly updated their firmware did not have this problem. However for some this never happened and caused all the problems you might have experienced. One method was to put special build firmware on the device which fixes the problem and Kodi would just work fine again. Sadly this is a quite technical process and could brick your device if not done properly. Luckily a community developer invested a lot of time in tracking down the problem and together with our main Android developer came to a solution for fixing this.

In short, we’ve solved the problems for the users that had the zoomed in or partial screen using Kodi in Android. As such we included these changes into the 15.2 RC build for every one to test and hopefully get their device working again.

Secondly some playback problem popped up for many Android users where they lost video after fast-forward playback. This should now have been correct as well (if you had not yet got the extra Play Store update for 15.1).

Should you still experience problems with this build please provide feedback on our forum or in this 15.2 specific test thread: link Be sure to provide sufficient information.

Improvements so far in version 15

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 15 release.

General: So far in version 15 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham and in Helix then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: As of this moment, all skins that worked in 14.x Helix should still work in 15 Isengard. In the PVR sections there are certain changes that might be noticeable and need specific skin changes. These changes are minimal and shouldn’t cause any major problems in usability. There still might be some options still missing which you relied upon first. We’re sure that most skin creators will be updating the skins in due time. Before that happens you should be able to enjoy this beta build without any problems.

Windows 10 problems

Users who have installed Windows 10 should make sure that they have the correct video card drivers installed. We see a lot of problems that have to do with this reported on the forum. It’s not something we as team can do anything about. Make sure you have updated all drivers according to the manufacturers website in case you are experiencing problems. Windows 10 has just been released and as such is still in active development. Another thing that might be helpful is installing the special Kodi version 15 DirectX11 build which is mentioned a bit further down.

DirectX 11 upgrade (not included in 15.0 or 15.1)

DX11Although this release post is all about the 15.0 version, mentioning the DX11 upgrade for next version is very important. Since switching from OpenGL in 2009, Kodi (and XBMC in the past) has used the DirectX 9 implementation for various tasks of rendering the user interface and media playback. This almost dates back to the XBOX days. With the hardware industry moving and focussing more on the newer DX11 with their drivers, more people have problems with running our outdated DX 9 version. This could range from simply not starting, crashing just after loading, playing videos or having problems with hardware acceleration. One of our developers afedchin took on this task and completely revised our DirectX 9 implementation and upgraded it to the more current standard of DirectX 11. Don’t worry if you still have an older card, we only use low level features so you don’t need to run to the shop for new gear. If you are having problems on Windows you can head to our forum where you can find the most recent build available which is currently based on our 15.0 release. We appreciate all the feedback we can get. Read more: here on our forum. Again this will not be part of our 15.x releases. It has already been successfully merged into our future 16.0 release.

Like Kodi™ itself, both official remotes are free and open source software.

Get involved

Getting involved is quite easy. Simply take the plunge and start using these 15.0 Isengard builds. If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after that, if asked, submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support to other users in our Forums where you can, or donate to the XBMC Foundation if you like. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.

MX still not working, sound coming but no picture

    • nooryani84 Oct 04, 2015

Sounds like an issue for the developers who maintain MX, not the Kodi Team.

    • Aaron Oct 07, 2015

What MX box are you talking about. I know 4 boxes that is called the MX box and not one is the same box. Check your box firmware you may need to upgrade to the newest firmware to support the new Kodi. Its a given. This may solve some of your issues. Keeping your box with up to date firmware from the manufacture makes sense.

go to acceleration in video settings and uncheck hardware acceleration (all 3) and restart Kodi

  • Khalid Oct 04, 2015

    Great work!!

  • S Oct 04, 2015

In Ubuntu 14.04 I added the unstable PPA and it did bring in this RC but it does NOT appear to include the updated PVR add-on Tvheadend HTSP. I tried specifically installing the kodi-pvr-hts using apt-get and it said the current version is already installed, and when I checked it was still the older version that doesn’t work properly. Did someone forget to build the updated addon for the Linux unstable repo?

Here’s hoping the “.2″ release of v15 is “the one” for Windows, just like in v14!

  • Atreyu Oct 05, 2015

    Great work guys!

V15 is starting to get all polished out.
Much appreciated, still very much thrilled with this opensource alternative to other (commercial) solutions!

Kodi needs to be made compatable with Mac 10.11 El Capitan.

After installing and launching a pop up states that Kodi is Broken or Damaged. If you go into System Preferences and change the setting to allow all apps Kodi opens fine. I think apple have changed something as it say Broken or Damaged before on earlier version of OSX.

I ended up deleting my whole Kodi setup due to that popup message thinking that Kodi was actually damaged or broken.

Apple are a pain in the backside with there software changes!

  • Alen Oct 05, 2015

Still no willy builds in ppa… :(

  • Malcolm Oct 05, 2015

I have just installed Kodi 15.2 RC 3 and that went well, so you can ignore my previous comment regarding compatibility with El Capitan.

Not sure why I got the pop up regarding broken or damaged though but that never came up after installing Kodi 15.2 RC 3.

Keep up the good work guys! I absolutely love what your doing with Kodi, It’s the Best!

  • Jordan Oct 05, 2015

Anyone else having streaming and buffering issues with Amazon Fire TV??

  • Sam Craig Oct 05, 2015

Do I need to install this manually? None of my add ons are working properly since last night.

  • Vitalyg149 Oct 05, 2015

Could you please test it for a longer period of time? MUCH, MUCH longer, to prevent more issues when the final version is released. I don’t understand the need to get thing out so fast. Developers cant catch up to all these updates, making a lot of addons not work. For example lots of addons showing movies being 1 min long meaning one hour… kodi 15 broke a lot of addons that show movie time and needs to fixed.

    • Kib Oct 06, 2015

Are you talking about unsupported add-ons showing illegal bootleg video ?
If not, where is your report with debug logs and screenshots showing the issue ?
If you are, we really don’t care about that issue. Those add-ons are giving us a very bad name, especially because people keep associating the add-ons themselves with our name.

We have been testing version 15 for 6 months before releasing the first version, and it has now been another 4 months since.
Only about 1% of our users downloads and installs a alpha, beta or release candidate. If you want more testing, do it yourself and provide proper bug reports early on.

      • Vitalyg149 Oct 07, 2015

Kodi is a media center based around people downloading movies and music storing it on their hard drive and using it to display in a nice way. (i’m sure that wasn’t the intent of the software) however I wasn’t even talking about that.

By they way, on android nexus player, play store version is 15.2 RC2 or RC3 now… and it crashes so STFU

Whatever… not worth replying further to you…

        • Klojum Oct 07, 2015

A few million people happily using Kodi by now, but there is always one asshole thinking he is more important than others. Congratulations.

        • Atreyu Oct 08, 2015

Wow! Nice attitude man, good luck with that in life.

          Unbelievable ….

  • Brandon Oct 06, 2015

Anyone have an issue with the new TVheadend addon? Mine sits and buffers every 5 seconds, like a bad signal. The backend shows 99% signal and worked great on last version.

  • Matt Oct 06, 2015

My video is in a small box in the upper left hand side of the screen, everything else is fine on my box, but when I put the movie or tv show on it does the small box… Someone help me!!!

    • Burleig Oct 07, 2015

Disable the first option for hardware acceleration.

Make sure you are on experts settings.

  • Jen Oct 06, 2015

Updated to the new version last night and an hour later all my accounts started to get hacked ?

    • meh Oct 10, 2015

I installed it too, and money started pouring into my bank account!

  • Rick Oct 06, 2015

Thanks for all your great work guys.
15 RC3 is working fine here.
I had some issues with 15 RC2, so I deleted Kodi and did a clean install of RC3 on my Android M8 box and everything is working great.
    Kodi Rocks!!

  • David Oct 06, 2015

Hi. Plz help. I just installed the 15.2 rc3 and I cannot use anything for more than 3-5seconds before I lose wifi and my router restarts itself. Everything worked fine before I installed the update. Thanks.

  • soliter26 Oct 07, 2015

Hi there, first of all thank for your hard work, you guys are rock. Just one question: Is there any chance to add to kodi so called MIRACAST (DLNA) function? I believe there are a lot of people with android device connected to home wifi network. The only chance to connect the tablet or mobile phone to TV is just with a dongle like chromecast or easycast or anycast etc. Of course smart TV with wifi is the other one. Google did not tell me how to do it. Maybe in future releases? Is there a chance? Once more – thanks a lot.

I can’t get connection to a windowsdrive, with my android mediaplayer, because the userid and password are not accepted. Userid and password is working in filemanager app.

    • Min2001 Oct 19, 2015

You only need to add the first name of your account login as your name for Windows 10.

  • Petri Oct 09, 2015

    Hi Kodi team
I wonder when are you planning on givin this Amazing software 3D support?

keep up the good work guys :)

    best whishes

  • DZG Oct 11, 2015

  • ian Sutherland Oct 12, 2015

Any chance you can fix the Kodi to work with sdcard1 on the aftv 2, xbmc_evn props?

  • Danielle Oct 13, 2015

So this is going to be extremely embarrassing because my question is simple and all of you are extremely intelligent. I turned on my dream machine box to go to my favorite part, Kodi, to see it updated but the “movies” and “TV” section I’ve been seeing in the videos is missing … Am I doing something wrong?

    • Zebu Oct 14, 2015

Go to videos -> files -> add source. Add your folders and choose what kind of content the folder contains (movies/tvshow/music etc.). Let i scan and get the media info from the web. You should now see the missing movies and tvshows in the main menu :)

  • MG Oct 13, 2015

As with rc2 it freezes Minix…

  • DZG Oct 15, 2015

One thing that could be good, instead of poping up a message every time a new release is up, which is quite disturbing. Make it that it only pops up once a new stable release is up..

    Best regards.

    • Martijn Oct 16, 2015

      then don’t install an RC

  • renexxxk Oct 15, 2015

Since new iOS 9, Airplay with Kodi doens’t work anymore.

  • Nicholas Oct 17, 2015

    Hi there,

I still have audio problems which started since kodi 15.0 came out. Can you eventually come with a fix before releasing kodi 15.2?
My problem exist even with kodi 15.2 rc 3.

GREAT JOB Kodi Team! A minority of people don’t appreciate the
superior programming you guys are delivering however, please don’t
forget those people are only a minority, and most of them don’t have
any idea how much time & unique knowledge are involved in
programming. They have no idea because they’re not educated in writing
codes, and they see only the final beautiful product. Kodi team are
extremely intelligent. Keep up the GREAT programming guys, and thanks
for all Kodi versions you guys have delivered.

Have a few problems with RC3 on an Android M8 box.

    1) When i press play this will actually reboot the box instead of playing the file. Happen with random files. The pronlem persists if i remove from library then add again.

    2) The audio is all over the place. I have to adjust it for every file with some older movies not syncing at all.

Do i have to uninstall to go back to RC2? I keep getting the App not intalled message if try to put RC2 back on.

Any ideas about the above… or should l just wait it out for the next stable release?

  • leli Nov 25, 2015

After installing Kodi 15.2 RC3 on MINIX with android 4.2.2 software I also encountered a problem with sound but it’s a bit different then the problems above, the sound will come but after about 2 minutes that the movie starts…has any encountered this issue?
