Kodi 15.2 Isengard – Release Candidate

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on Aug 28, 2015 in Pre-Release

Once a ‘final’ version is released some new bugs and/or problems usually appear out of nowhere, and last release was no exception. Even though tens of thousands of users were already testing the 15.0 version before release and we try very hard to prevent them, as soon as million started using it, some problems we either did not think of or which we did not notice popped up. To counter some of these new issues, we’re bringing you this second maintenance release candidate called 15.2 RC1 which has some additional fixes on top of the 15.0 and 15.1 release.
This is still a release candidate; once enough users have verified that these improvements work out well, and we did not introduce any major regressions, we’ll be releasing it as final 15.2 version. To be safe just backup your userdata (online manual) first.
It should be ok to just install this on top of your current Kodi 15.0 or 15.1 version. For the MySQL users out there; we never bump the database versions in our bugfix or maintenance releases – you can safely keep using it within your network.

Most important fix done

Over time the Android version has travelled some bumpy roads. This is due to the fact there are tens of thousands of different devices out there with each it’s own Android version and each a slightly different firmware and hardware. Firmware is the part where the manufacturer of the device has to make sure the everything works as it should like audio and video output. This time after the 15.0 release it became clear that for several devices using an Amlogic chipset there was a change in firmware that caused Kodi to not function properly and only show a zoomed in or only used part of the screen. Devices that came from manufacturers that had properly updated their firmware did not have this problem. However for some this never happened and caused all the problems you might have experienced. One method was to put special build firmware on the device which fixes the problem and Kodi would just work fine again. Sadly this is a quite technical process and could brick your device if not done properly. Luckily a community developer invested a lot of time in tracking down the problem and together with our main Android developer came to a solution for fixing this. Past week we provided some special builds on the forum which solved the problems for the users that had the zoomed in or partial screen using Kodi. As such we included these changes into the 15.2 RC build for every one to test and hopefully get their device working again. Secondly some playback problem popped up for many Android users where they lost video after fast-forward playback. This should now have been correct as well (if you had not yet got the extra Play Store update for 15.1).

Should you still experience problems with this build please provide feedback on our forum or in this 15.2 specific test thread: link Be sure to provide sufficient information.

Fixes done in this RC 1 version

  • • Updated taglib that fixes a crash when playing flac files
  • • Fix volume adjustment for XBOX controllers
  • • Fixes side flyout appearing when using touch
  • • Fixes freeze on win32 on away mode
  • • Fix crash on osx 10.7 when trying to resolve hdd names
  • • Fix Amlogic zoom problems on Android
  • • Set default screen region for dvb subs (wrong placed subtitles)
  • • Fix missing lyrics from tag when playing from musicdb url
  • • Properly set the time format when setting/changing regions
  • • Fix playback problems on AMLogic after ffwd or skip
  • • Fix fallback for nb_no language
  • • Fix empty LatestAlbum.Artist
  • • Fix watched flag in Confluence media info 3 view

The complete technical list can be found on our Github milestones.

Improvements so far in version 15

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 15 release.

General: So far in version 15 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham and in Helix then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: As of this moment, all skins that worked in 14.x Helix should still work in 15 Isengard. In the PVR sections there are certain changes that might be noticeable and need specific skin changes. These changes are minimal and shouldn’t cause any major problems in usability. There still might be some options still missing which you relied upon first. We’re sure that most skin creators will be updating the skins in due time. Before that happens you should be able to enjoy this beta build without any problems.

Windows 10 problems

Users who have installed Windows 10 should make sure that they have the correct video card drivers installed. We see a lot of problems that have to do with this reported on the forum. It’s not something we as team can do anything about. Make sure you have updated all drivers according to the manufacturers website in case you are experiencing problems. Windows 10 has just been released and as such is still in active development. Another thing that might be helpful is installing the special Kodi version 15 DirectX11 build which is mentioned a bit further down.

DirectX 11 upgrade (not included in 15.0 or 15.1)

DX11Although this release post is all about the 15.0 version, mentioning the DX11 upgrade for next version is very important. Since switching from OpenGL in 2009, Kodi (and XBMC in the past) has used the DirectX 9 implementation for various tasks of rendering the user interface and media playback. This almost dates back to the XBOX days. With the hardware industry moving and focussing more on the newer DX11 with their drivers, more people have problems with running our outdated DX 9 version. This could range from simply not starting, crashing just after loading, playing videos or having problems with hardware acceleration. One of our developers afedchin took on this task and completely revised our DirectX 9 implementation and upgraded it to the more current standard of DirectX 11. Don’t worry if you still have an older card, we only use low level features so you don’t need to run to the shop for new gear. If you are having problems on Windows you can head to our forum where you can find the most recent build available which is currently based on our 15.0 release. We appreciate all the feedback we can get. Read more: here on our forum. Again this will not be part of our 15.x releases. It has already been successfully merged into our future 16.0 release.

Other Software

In addition to creating Kodi, the members of Team Kodi have created official remotes to be installed on your tablet or phone.

Kore™ (Android) Official Kodi Remote (iOS)
org.xbmc.kore Official Kodi Remote (iOS)

Like Kodi™ itself, both official remotes are free and open source software.

Get involved

Getting involved is quite easy. Simply take the plunge and start using these 15.0 Isengard builds. If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after that, if asked, submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support to other users in our Forums where you can, or donate to the XBMC Foundation if you like. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.

Wow, you guys are on fire, hammering out these releases. Kodi keeps getting better and better!

Really appreciate all of your hard work.

That blue would make a good splash screen :)

  • tellmeastory Aug 29, 2015

    Appreciate the fixes.

Still having issues with rewind (all speeds) and fast forward at 32x on Windows 10. Any idea when there will be a fix for these rw and ff issues?

    • Martijn Aug 29, 2015

Why don’t just use skip? 32x will never be fixed likely because it’s plainly not done.

      • Kodi userp Aug 29, 2015

That would be such a loss, as its very basic functionality that any other half*ss player can handle. The fact that devs use skip (which is ok, but doesnt allow you to view the exact position in the video for editing purposes) in my opinion should not be a reason to just leave it broken.
I sure hope you guys reconsider. In any case i thank you guys for bettering a already great program on other areas

        • tellmeastory Aug 30, 2015

I occasionally do use the skip functionality, tend to use the two functions for different things (i.e. jumping to a different section of the movie vs. trying to find a particular spot I want to watch again or jump ahead to).

I agree with userp — I hope you consider fixing the functionality. If there really are no plans to fix it though, maybe remove it since it doesn’t work anyway?

  • renan Aug 29, 2015

Same issues with subtitles of every Isengard version. Back to Helix 14.2 again.

    • MIK Aug 29, 2015

Yes, this is big problem for me. I use Kodi with projector and subtitles under the picture. Also I stay in version 14.2 .

      • Martijn Aug 29, 2015

        check your subtitles settings

    • Martijn Aug 29, 2015

      check your settings

      • renan Aug 29, 2015

Doesn’t matter what settings I choose, subtitles always overlay the video.

        • Martijn Aug 30, 2015

This is an announcement blog post not a support section. You want help? Go to the forum and provide information like the rest does. No information mean no fix.

          • klosz007 Sep 08, 2015

For me subtitles also overlay video even if they are set to be displayed on the bottom of the screen (on the black band), not on the bottom of the video. Was fine on 14.2. Posted on forum, no help…
So far for me 15.x broke more things than repaired (really no video rewind anymore ?) so I rolled back to 14.2.

  • Rei Aug 29, 2015

The Bello theme made Kodi completely unusable when I updated from 15.0 to this. TV tunes fails then the screen turns purple and I can’t do anything. Really…the Bello theme hasn’t been working correctly since 15.0 came. I fixed the issue by starting fresh and readded my stuff.

    • LZ28 Aug 31, 2015

I’m having the same issue Rei. Glad Im not the only one. I guess I’ll have to do a complete re-install by what it sounds like. Let me know if you figure out how to use Bello theme without causing any issues. Thank,

    • sweets Nov 24, 2015

How did you fix this, I put Bello for skin now same thing is happening how do I fix? It says tv tunes error and screen goes black can’t do anything inside kodi…

  • manuel Aug 29, 2015

So i had to re install kodi, doing it from play store gets me 15.2 RC instead of 15.1 really odd

And then I get an ugly error

Remote communication server failed to start

    is this normal?

    • Damon Oct 28, 2015

Hey did you get this fixed?

This has started popping up on mine…..

  • Jeffry Aug 29, 2015

I cannot get kodi 15.2 to download, can anyone pls help

  • rmcrys Aug 29, 2015

My Android (TV) Box installed automatically the 15.2 RC version, and now:

    1) it says “Superrepo” version Isengard does *not* have the correct structure (with 15.1 it works well) and the items from Superrepo do *NOT* install. I already removed the repos, deleted the “zip” from “packages”, deleted “temp” folder, installed again the “superrepo” (both isengard & helix to try) and I have no luck with the Isengard version. Helix version tried a couple of times and works. With the 15.1 the isengard version works very well…

    2) same issue as on 15.x with Amlogic latest chipsets: jumping on time when watching a movie with cursor UP / DOWN freezes the image (but the sound works); *disabling* “amcodec hardware” works well on time jumps (though sometimes the movies are somewhat choppy). On 14.x I can keep amcodec HW ON and it works always very well.

    • Martijn Aug 30, 2015

      Stop using Superrepo

      • rmcrys Aug 30, 2015

That is not a fix or a solution. As disabling amcodec…

  • Paul Aug 29, 2015

Same problem: where is the download link?

(I cannot get kodi 15.2 to download, can anyone pls help)

    • Martijn Aug 29, 2015

      have you scrolled down?

  • davi Aug 29, 2015

    • Vitaly Gurevich Aug 30, 2015

  • dars Aug 30, 2015

I have adroidbox t8 running kodi 14.2 would I have install a new wizard if upgrade to isengard 15

    • Kodi userp Aug 30, 2015

I wouldnt install any wizard. Those things are evil

  • mo123 Aug 30, 2015

Hope there will also be fixes for Rockchip devices like RK328/RK3368 and not just AMLogic in the future.

Auto refresh rate switching is not working in Lollipop firmware on Rockchip devices.
Passthrough is not working on Rockchip devices but works in SPMC.
Mediacodec ff/rw get out of sync on Rockchip devices, don’t know if it’s better now.

  • Nelson Aug 30, 2015

My nvidia shield remote not the game pad but the remote won’t open the context menu why is that? Please fix.

    • Martijn Aug 30, 2015

you will have to wait for 16.0

      • Vitaly Gurevich Aug 30, 2015

Yes it works in 16, but it crashes…. like crazy. Same issue on Nexus player.

  • Eric Fondren Aug 30, 2015

Will 15.0+ be available to openelec users.
We’re using raspberry pi2 and 14.2 is the only version available.

Could you suggest the best platform for pi2?

  • Curtis M Aug 30, 2015

Thank you for this amazing multimedia system, I really appreciate your creativity, thought put into it, and unwavering dedication to forging the future of the home entertainment environment! Glad you’re the ones leading it!

      • Joey Vento Sep 06, 2015

This version fixes the zoom problem but has a serious audio/video sync problem

    • Klojum Sep 02, 2015

Your TV has what is called “overscan” enabled by default. LG’s TV settings have a zoom option called ‘Scanning’ where the pixels are shown 1-on-1, thus giving you a normal 1080p screen. If this doesn’t help, visit the Kodi forum or IRC channel for more support.

    • Jim C Oct 18, 2015

I had picture problems with my Android M8 TV box with Kodi 15.2. !4.2 it was supplied with worked perfectly but crashed a couple of days ago. Like others I’ve tried the Kodi video settings but no success. Found you have to go into The M8 box settings and alter display from Auto detect to 1080p 60hz, you may have to experiment for you TV. Hope this helps.

  • matt Aug 31, 2015

this is NOT the tech support forum

  • lukson Aug 31, 2015

Still – thesubtitlles are in wrong position. Can’t force placing them on the black bars (below the video)

Widnows/android version of 15 v. has the bug.
    Please fix it!

    • Martijn Aug 31, 2015

      Sound a little demanding…

      • renan Sep 01, 2015

Why? Every version below 14.2 helix subtitles work like a charm, if choose ” below the video” (over the black bar) they appear below the video over the black bar…
It’s no like that only on Isengard versions.

        • Martijn Sep 01, 2015

This is not a support section. Go to the forum, provide information, load gsoc and samples

  • Tim. Aug 31, 2015

Thank you guys for constantly keeping up with the problems of supporting a wide variety of devices! You are always appreciated. RC1 working great on my Android devices.

How can I make KODI to work with Mag 254

  • Larry Sep 02, 2015

I am using Kodi 15.2 rc on the matricom gbox q. When installing a repository from zip file the box will freeze several times during the installations and I will have to reboot it to continue. Is there anything I can do to stop this?

  • holden Sep 02, 2015

Hello i just bought a amazon fire tv stick that someone installed the koi 14.2 software on.
im not very tech savvy at all. i can’t watch anything though the shows start but they don’t play. I’m not sure if my internet connection is not fast enough or if its the old software or if I’m doing something wrong. Any information would be much appreciated

  • Roger Sep 02, 2015

Would someone please put Kodi 15.2 rpm’s on freshrpm’s when it is final? I love Fedora and run Kodi 14.2 on Fedora 22. I would like to upgrade. Right now every Fedora user rolls their own Kodi build. Fedora is a great platform and deserves the same attention (or more) as proprietary platforms. Thanks.

  • Roger Sep 02, 2015

Kodi 15.1 is on freshrpms. THANK YOU.

  • Jakob Sep 03, 2015

    Thanks Martijn & crew

    Keep up the good job!

  • Johnny Boy Sep 03, 2015

Man, so many complaints for a free software program, anyone here donating any $$$ to Martijn and the KODI crew to help in development and all the fees incurred in bringing us this awesome program? Nothing is perfect and these guys been working their asses off making it better.

Keep up the good work KODI peeps!

    • Martijn Sep 03, 2015

Thx for the kind words :)
I’m merely the one typing some text. The rest are the real heroes

  • Koray Sep 05, 2015

People who have problems and “demanding” fixes immediately please realise this is FREE and developed by volunteers fro many platforms. They owe us nothing and doing this for reasons which I can only imagine to be greater good and also personal development. We do not have the right to demand things from them however we can recognise their hard work request features and bugs to be quashed. That’s it.’I have done maybe 100 builds so far and spent ages to get my box to run just perfect but since this is a community project with many contributer not once demanded anythig to be changed. Unlike some of us I know which side is my bread is buttered.

  • Darrell Sep 06, 2015

Thanks for the hard work guys. I’ve sent a small donation to Kodi and bought some merchandise.

I agree with Bledd, that blue logo would look great as a splash screen!

  • whatever Sep 06, 2015

Thanks, looks like release speed is greatly improving at KODI.

One thing must be said though, I hope that KODI developers focus more on the ARM branch of the release because 4k ARM set top boxes can be had for as little as $16 dollars now.(Allwinner H3 chipset)

There are a few 4K ARM chipsets that are inside a lot of the sub 50 dollar market, which make them great for KODI deployment
Amlogic S805, Amlogic S812, various MTK chipsets, and what I am using is the newest Allwinner H3(which the most recent KODI 15.2rc can only detect 2 out of the 4 A7cores)

    Keep up the great work.

  • internnetham Sep 06, 2015

Perhaps if you stopped pushing out releases so quickly and did longer testing like the old days, we might see less of these fix fix fix releases.

So that’s now 14 and fifteen that’s had this going on….
Should we expect the same for 16?
Whoever in the dev team pushed for the high speed releases, needs to admit their mistake to the rest of the team.

    • Martijn Sep 06, 2015

perhaps you have no clue what you are talking about? You are just shouting complete nonsense.
There is no need to admit any mistake because there is none!

      • Kevin Oct 09, 2015

Are you one of the gods if so great job on this stuff forums are nice but he’ll I don’t understand it lol.

    • Morpheus Sep 06, 2015

Just take the blue pill and everything will be fine.

  • Web and Other Sep 09, 2015

Is there any news on the sound problems that appeared after the release of Kodi 15.0? The sound gets lost after some time of playback or it takes some time to start in the first place.

  • Steve milligan Sep 09, 2015

How can I get my fire stick updated to the latest version I’m not any good with computers etc so I normally buy already done, but realise this is not effective, love the kodi and just want to update from 14.2!!! Help

    • Alcaloide Sep 14, 2015

Steve, you need to sideload kodi on AFTV. As you already have it installed, you need Total commander so you can access reinstall the new kodi versioni. First, uninstall Kodi, then install total commander, then download apk from this site (android version) on a usb flash drive, then put this flashdrive on AFTV usb port and use total commander to install the new kodi version.

About Kodi

Kodi is a free and open source media player application developed by the XBMC Foundation, a non-profit technology consortium. Kodi is available for multiple operating-systems and hardware platforms, featuring a 10-foot user interface for use with televisions and remote controls. It allows users to play and view most videos, music, podcasts, and other digital media files from local and network storage media and the internet.
