Kodi 16.0 beta 3 – Jarvis is getting ready #3

Posted By: Martijn on Dec 06, 2015 in Pre-Release
Kodi-Wallpaper-blue

With this announcement we are releasing beta 3. Why the rapid succession of these releases you might wonder? By doing more releases in the shorter period we reduce the amount of changes that are included in each one. Instead of a huge list of changes it now only has several which gives a better overview. The advantage of that is possible regressions get picked up way faster and that you as user also get the benefit of not having to wait a long time to get these fixes.

This Release Early Release Often (RERO) is what we as a team have decided to go forward with as we see the benefits of this approach. Our developers don’t have to wait a very long time before their features get included in a release and you a user will also get to try them out without having to wait many months. Enough about the RERO approach as we’ll soon devote a special review about this.

Music library improvements

Well not exactly new but certainly something that got overlooked a lot is getting your music scanned to library. For videos it’s quite obvious there’s a library where you can scan in all your movies and tv show from your local or remote storage. Setting this up is relatively straight forward because when you add a source it immediately asks if you want to add it to the library. For music this was anything but obvious. You add a new music source which contain all your music files and that was it. Although that was how it seemed. Somewhere hidden in the context menu (which you pull up with right or using “C” key) there was an option scan to library. This magically started scanning your music files and reading all the tag data which contain artist, title, year and whatever more in a nicely organised library. Time to make it more obvious.

Add music source Scan music to library

After you added a new music file source it will now ask you if you want to scan all the files in that folder using the tag data in those files and organise it for you.

Caveates to music library:

  • • Your music needs to be properly tagged. For example with ID3v1, ID3v2.3, ID3v2.4, Vorbis Comments or APE
  • • If not properly tagged Kodi can’t properly organise it and things might be completely misplaced.
  • • Properly tagging music files can be a tedious job however there are several tools for assisting on that: MusicBrainz Picard, Mp3Tag, TagScanner and so on
  • • Scanning these files could take quite a while before it’s finished depending on the amount

Advantages to music library:

  • • You will get an awesome looking library view just like for movies and tvshows
  • • You can search your music files
  • • Library splits up the music in sections: Genres, Artists, Albums, Singles, All songs, Years, Top 100 (based on your playback), Recently added/played albums, Compilations
  • • You can split everything up even further using smartplaylists
  • • You can rate your music and filter based on that
  • • Since Kodi also acts as UPnP server you can share them over you home-network if the clients support this
  • • You can scan for additional information like artist biography or album review/synopsis (right click or C key in album or artist library)
  • • This can be enabled by default in settings -> music -> library -> “Fetch additional information during updates”
  • • You can change the default language for online information by going to settings -> addon-ons -> my add-ons -> Information providers -> Album or artist information -> open the universal album or artist scraper

Although music library is not yet at the same level as movies or tv shows, there is certainly work being done in this area to make it better. Stay tuned for next version.

Example of tagging your album with MusicBrainz Picard

Visit the other announcements listed below for previous beta fixes.

A lot of changes went in Kodi 16. Removing old code, splitting up parts in more logical chunks and making it all more resilient to future changes. All these changes are part of a massive change list that only makes sense to developers actually knowing what the source code does. In short we will no bother you all with summing up the list. It’s just something that is worth mentioning that not all improvements have to be actual features and are visible to users. We prefer that the program actually works than adding bells and whistles.

Known problems in this beta

As with all developments we sometimes hit problems that need a little more time. One of the known problems is using profiles. With the splitting of skin settings we hit a small regression that affects users who are using the profile feature. Switching will possible cause your profile to be reset so in case you use this feature we suggest to not upgrade to this version. There is currently a fix pending for this but we could use some help testing. If you have problem regarding the profile switching not keeping your skin settings you can get a test build here: LINK. Please comment in that forum thread if you still encounter problems or if it has been fixed. Please limit comments to only this particular problem.

Improvements so far in version 16

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 16 release.

Add-ons

General: So far in version 16 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham, Helix and Isengard then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: Sadly due to the amount of changes we’ll have to announce that skins will have certain parts non working. This beta will mark any version 15 skin as incompatible and will ask you to switch back to Confluence. This means that for you to continue using Kodi 16.0 you will have to switch back to Confluence or wait till the skin you use has been updated in our repository. Good new however is that a variety of skin have already start updating to latest changes.
The following skins are already updated for version 16 and will auto-update when you upgrade. We’re sure more will follow soon.

  • • Black Glass Nova
  • • Chroma
  • • Confluence
  • • Eunique
  • • Mimic
  • • Nebula
  • • Rapier
  • • re-Touched
  • • Titan
  • • Transparency!

Community Designed Kodi Shirt and Hoodie

At Kodi DevCon this year we spent a lot of time talking about how to better recognize our community, and this solution was proposed. We’re going to try featuring a new, different shirt every month designed by a community member.  So this month, thanks to Sam Fisher for an awesome design! Sam was a major help in our logo search and makes most of that cool artwork you see on Facebook. If you would like to be the featured artist next month, post your design in theshirt forum thread! Also, be sure to browse through the available options. There are multiple colors of shirts and – it being winter time – we’ve also made hoodie versions available. T-shirt is available up to 5XL and the hoodie to 2XL and shipping is worldwide at a very reasonable fee.
This design is only available for a limited amount of time!

I foresee a Christmas release of Jarvis!

completely kidding, but that would be awesome.

  • Blurayx Dec 06, 2015

Brightness & contrast adjustments has been removed in beta 3 for Nvidia Shield TV.
    is this permanent?

  • Mark Dec 06, 2015

    • Berry Dec 06, 2015

      That would be nice,!

    • zee112 Dec 07, 2015

They’ve answered that many times before. No more proprietary protocols. So, no.

    • fritsch Dec 07, 2015

No and no and no. We are doomed enough with our airplay support … not yet another proprietary blob support …

      • Ego Dec 10, 2015

What’s blobs? Isn’t AirPlay support an open source implementation? I highly doubt they’re using Apple proprietary files, for fear of lawsuit

  • Saskia Dec 06, 2015

Personally, I mostly care about Airplay with El Capitan (iTunes 12.3.1). Can we expect this to be fixed soon? Thanks!

    • Klojum Dec 07, 2015

Perhaps you should ask yourself why Apple is changing the rules on Airplay time after time. It gets broken all the time for a reason.

    • VonMagnum Dec 08, 2015

What doesn’t work with Airplay with El Capitan for you? Yes, iOS8 and iOS9 doesn’t work for me to Kodi, but iTunes 12.3.1′s Airplay works fine with 15.2 on FireTV for me (both music and videos sent from iTunes on my Mac Mini 2012 running El Capitan).

Or are you saying the 16.x betas don’t work with 12.3.1?

  • Shay Dec 06, 2015

I’m a new user to Kodi. I’m using Isengard on the fire stick. I I changed my skin or theme in then lost function with the remote control. I’m not able to see the cursor nor can I get to the settings to change back. I’m limited on what I can do. Can somebody help me so I can update etc. Will I have to erase it and redownload or is there another way around it?   I’d appreciate the help.   Function is limited ..

    • Adam Dec 07, 2015

  • Jorge Dec 06, 2015

    Hello
I installed the version beta3 . The mouse wheel it no longer works.
    Apreciate your help.
    Thanks

    • Bellemount Dec 07, 2015

Same here. Beta 2 mouse wheel works on android stick mk808 with Logitech usb mouse. Kodi 16 beta 3 mouse wheel fails and I don’t see an error in the log.

  • Diogenes Dec 06, 2015

Thanks guys for yet another piece of art. Will definitely jump to 16 on the Bello skin gets Jarvis support. Until then, i’ll keep enjoying my sweet 15…

  • poukman Dec 07, 2015

hi,Maybe a full support of DXVA2 for hevc/x265 with nvidia GTX 960 in beta 4 update??

    sorry for my poor english

    • fritsch Dec 07, 2015

HEVC 8 bit works as it should. For 10 bit – ffmpeg needs adjustments which are coming in slowly. There are some testbuilds done by @afedchin on the forum which support full HEVC on nvidia.

  • fdishy Dec 07, 2015

I can’t get my live tv to work with the same channels that I get on IPTV Stalker 9.0.21. I use NFPS is that one being eliminated? I know a lot of people don’t like it but I think it is a voluntary bargain that cost me a dollar a week for a so so quality program. Sometimes it plays great and other times it buffers or won’t come in at all. It beats paying $150.00 per month for cable or satellite. I was run over by a drunk driver years ago on my motorcycle and broke my back. I am now on a very small disability check and can afford this programming when it works. I also enjoy looking at all the free channels and learning how to find more. Thanks you do great work, I have been using many versions of your products.

  • J.O. Dec 07, 2015

Huge thank you for work on Audio DSP.

  • Mary Dec 07, 2015

I have downloaded Kodi on my fire stick know how do I get it to work HELP

  • kdb424 Dec 07, 2015

Seems like the mouse is not read as a mouse at all any more on android. Using on a shield TV with a mouse, nad the wheel doesn’t work as stated by others, but simply moving the mouse over the video doesn’t brong up the interface, and I have to click to get it back. Anything on skins that you can mouse over the edge to bring up also doesn’t work. Awesome update, small regression.

  • Kodiguy Dec 08, 2015

After installing this update on my Android box (myGica) I have lost the touchpad and “focus on hoverover” fuctionality with the wireless keyboard I have attached to the device. Some glitches are expected.
I hope to see this functionality restored in the next update(s).
Great work on these builds by all involved. Thanks.

  • willemd Dec 08, 2015

When I peeked at the github.com, the changes in Master are for version 17, right? Not for Jarvis?

    • Kib Dec 08, 2015

Correct, once we start the path towards a release, master is opened for the alphas of the next release (new additions etc) and we branch of for the release candidates.
You can find latest commits for Jarvis in the Jarvis branch at https://github.com/xbmc/xbmc/tree/Jarvis

      • willemd Dec 10, 2015

Would you say that the nightly builds are probably more stable than the beta that’s a few days old now?

        • eema Dec 10, 2015

Nightly builds based on jarvis are.. The ones based on master arent. In master it already went in a big change (reworked player) that created several bugs..

  • Danilo Dec 08, 2015

I have minix X-8H with XBMC Minix .
I have also separeted install of Kodi 15 Isengard working well .
After install a new version Kodi 16 beta 3 , menu of Kodi is not seen anymore .
I just have a blue screen with bublles and I can not do anything .

  • Dominic Robinson Dec 08, 2015

Kodi is great, but when oh when will there be an updated confluence skin? Confluence has been the same since Frodo and it’s really looking outdated. I could of course use another skin, but I like the stability of Confluence.

    • Johan Dec 12, 2015

      +1

I also prefer Confluence and there’s nothing really wrong with it.
But it wouldn’t hurt with a refresh. Maybe a new background.

    • Paul K Dec 12, 2015

Use the CCM Helix Confluence skin instead, very similar to confluence but can be customised to give a much cleaner look and has many more options.

  • DoDe Dec 08, 2015

    Hi,
is there any chance that Kodi will be available for Windows 10 as a universal app?

  • 4500 Dec 08, 2015

Any chance there could be a fix for the audio sync probles with android, please? I’m sure i read it was due to a hack/fix not being used on 15. Playing around with audio sync (and subtitle sync) at the beginning of movies and shows is getting real old.

    Thanks x

  • Soliter26 Dec 08, 2015

Anyone else with live tv problem? My live tv does not appear at all, doing what doing. There is just short info that the live tv starts, but nothing happens then.

    • Atreyu Dec 09, 2015

please post issues in the support forum, not here

  • Olool Dec 10, 2015

  • alex Dec 10, 2015

Scroll wheel mouse don’t work on android box with 16 beta3

    • Martijn Dec 11, 2015

install tomorrow’s nightly build for Jarvis

  • Animac Dec 10, 2015

    I love Jarvis!

I’ve got the latest nightly running on Win 7 and it’s a thing of beauty.

Only glitch I’ve found so far is no way to bring up the function bar on live TV. It’s not the end of the world, I can back out to the EPG and just choose again – just though I’d mention it.

Love “look and feel” menu too.

Well done guys, best Christmas present I’m going to get.

  • Kurosh Dec 11, 2015

    Hi,

Can someone please answer the headless question that keeps getting posted on every Kodi update but yet to be answered…

When will headless functionality be available? In particular, on Windows.

    Thank you

  • tkgafs Dec 11, 2015

using music library view, if I queue a single album from the album view the artwork is not displayed on the currently playing screen. If I choose a single track to queue the artwork is displayed.

If I choose party mode no album artwork is displayed

If I use the artists view and queue an album again no artwork is displayed

I am running on windows 10 64 bit and using the default skin for kodi

this seems to be a regression between beta 2 and beta 3

  • kiesa Dec 11, 2015

Kodi 16.3, running good for android marshmallow. Brightness & contrast are must haves due to vid quality when viewing. Eliminate non working & usefull sources(why user)? Save on exit doesn’t exsist. Should compile?
