Kodi 16.0 beta 4 – Jarvis is getting ready #4

Posted By: Martijn on Dec 13, 2015 in Pre-Release
Kodi-Wallpaper-blue

With this announcement we are releasing beta 4. Why the rapid succession of these releases you might wonder? By doing more releases in the shorter period we reduce the amount of changes that are included in each one. Instead of a huge list of changes it now only has several which gives a better overview. The advantage of that is possible regressions get picked up way faster and that you as user also get the benefit of not having to wait a long time to get these fixes.

This Release Early Release Often (RERO) is what we as a team have decided to go forward with as we see the benefits of this approach. Our developers don’t have to wait a very long time before their features get included in a release and you a user will also get to try them out without having to wait many months. Enough about the RERO approach as we’ll soon devote a special review about this.

This we only have a small list of fixes that made it into this beta.

Fixes done in this beta 4:

  • • Fixed: several credentials leaking in the debuglog
  • • Fixed: fix enabled status for audio DSP add-ons
  • • Fixed: stop scraping album overriding tags when override tags Disabled
  • • Fixed: Custom Music Node/Playlist Rule Based Queries
  • • Fixed: Input.Select for PVR fullscreen windows with JSON-RPC
  • • Fixed: ghost timers in EPG window
  • • Fixed: sidemenu now playing buttons in Confluence
  • • Fixed: mouse handling regression on Android
  • • Fixed: don’t use cached results for dir checks in our Python API
  • • Fixed: missing header label on clean EPG progress dialog
  • • Fixed: [configure] make sure the top kodi src dir is always in INCLUDES

Visit the other announcements listed below for previous beta fixes.

A lot of changes went in Kodi 16. Removing old code, splitting up parts in more logical chunks and making it all more resilient to future changes. All these changes are part of a massive change list that only makes sense to developers actually knowing what the source code does. In short we will no bother you all with summing up the list. It’s just something that is worth mentioning that not all improvements have to be actual features and are visible to users. We prefer that the program actually works than adding bells and whistles.

Known problems in this beta

As with all developments we sometimes hit problems that need a little more time. One of the known problems is using profiles. With the splitting of skin settings we hit a small regression that affects users who are using the profile feature. Switching will possible cause your profile to be reset so in case you use this feature we suggest to not upgrade to this version. There is currently a fix pending for this but we could use some help testing. If you have problem regarding the profile switching not keeping your skin settings you can get a test build here: LINK. Please comment in that forum thread if you still encounter problems or if it has been fixed. Please limit comments to only this particular problem.

Improvements so far in version 16

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 16 release.

Add-ons

General: So far in version 16 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham, Helix and Isengard then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: Sadly due to the amount of changes we’ll have to announce that skins will have certain parts non working. This beta will mark any version 15 skin as incompatible and will ask you to switch back to Confluence. This means that for you to continue using Kodi 16.0 you will have to switch back to Confluence or wait till the skin you use has been updated in our repository. Good new however is that a variety of skin have already start updating to latest changes.
The following skins are already updated for version 16 and will auto-update when you upgrade. We’re sure more will follow soon.

  • • AppTV (added this week)
  • • Black Glass Nova
  • • Chroma
  • • Confluence
  • • Eunique
  • • Mimic
  • • Nebula
  • • Rapier
  • • re-Touched
  • • Titan
  • • Transparency!

Community Designed Kodi Shirt and Hoodie

At Kodi DevCon this year we spent a lot of time talking about how to better recognize our community, and this solution was proposed. We’re going to try featuring a new, different shirt every month designed by a community member.  So this month, thanks to Sam Fisher for an awesome design! Sam was a major help in our logo search and makes most of that cool artwork you see on Facebook. If you would like to be the featured artist next month, post your design in theshirt forum thread! Also, be sure to browse through the available options. There are multiple colors of shirts and – it being winter time – we’ve also made hoodie versions available. T-shirt is available up to 5XL and the hoodie to 2XL and shipping is worldwide at a very reasonable fee.
This design is only available for a limited amount of time!

Conclusion

Should you want to download and install this build please visit our download page.

Please report any problems on our forum http://forum.kodi.tv and not on the release announcement.

Donations or getting involved

Getting involved is quite easy. Simply take the plunge and start using these 16.0 Jarvis builds. If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after that, if asked, submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support in our Forums where you can. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.
We are always happy to receive a donation by which you show your support and appreciation. All donations go towards the XBMC foundation and are typically used for travel to attend conferences, any necessary paperwork and legal fees, purchase necessary hardware and licenses for developers and hopefully the yearly XBMC Foundation Developers Conference.

Doing a great job. I continue to convert friends and family to kodi for their home media needs. I look forward to the public release of this next iteration. Happy Holidays!

  • SmoothSinner Dec 13, 2015

    Great work guys

  • Brian Davidson Dec 13, 2015

OK. Where do we get this from?
I ask only because the XBMC Unstable page on Launchpad still lists only beta3: 2:16.0~git20151206.1622-beta3-0trusty

    • Kib Dec 14, 2015

It usually takes a day or two before the builds are available on launchpad, after we finalize.
You can find it there now.

  • Springless Dec 13, 2015

Can not get library listing by title on any of five android devices.

  • Kudos Dec 13, 2015

    GREAT!!!!!!!!!

  • Daniel Dec 13, 2015

    Hi guys,

Please try to leave more space for words to be translated

For example the bottom line of buttons on the “Movie Information” page is too crowded

the 3 words “Set my rating” is pretty short in English, but is clipped in most of the languages

In my opinion the horizontal list of items is pretty bad choice when it comes to i18n

Any news on the Arctic Zypher skin? Will it be updated and integrated with the Kodi 16.0 anytime soon? My favourite build inuse is based of the Arctic Zypher

  • wuerOo Dec 13, 2015

    Super-cool

  • Ali Dec 14, 2015

    Good work Guys

  • Robert Dec 14, 2015

My Kodi was working fine the past week – then all of sudden it doesn’t work anymore. I’ve did a “Fresh-Start”, but when I try to install addons, I keep getting message “Can’t connect to the internet” although I’m all ready contacted. This is happening on every device! Does anyone know if there is a problem with the network because that’s what it’s suggesting.

    • Ron Jan 07, 2016

I had the same issue. I had to reset by fire stick by to factory settings. This means you lose anything you have on it, but it fixed my issue.

    • matt Jan 10, 2016

hi. i had this problem and other pc’s Were online. the problem for me was my isp (verizon fios $uck$) DNS server! i switched my dns to googles dns and all works great again.

  • SmoothSinner Dec 14, 2015

Guys, can we get a “always on top” in “setting”. That way when we’re not using full screen, we can still see it while using other things on the screen. Thanks

    • JohnK Dec 19, 2015

I second his idea, i’ve always wished for such an option for multiscreens configurations instead of using fullscreen window to be able to multitask on another screen.

  • William Maesta Dec 14, 2015

Can you add scroll bars on the side and button of the screen. Also, how about a minimize button.

  • Polarrys Dec 14, 2015

fix enabled status for audio DSP add-ons

    Yeah !!
    Thx ;)

  • Scott Dec 14, 2015

after upgrading to beta 4 pvr.hts addon is broken : ERROR: PVR – Add-on ‘Tvheadend HTSP Client’ is using an incompatible GUI API version. XBMC minimum GUI API version = ’5.10.0′, add-on GUI API version ’5.8.0′

  • Marco Dec 14, 2015

    Thanks guys,

    I’m dreaming…. of a Jarvis…..christmas!

  • Movie78 Dec 14, 2015

It looks we are going to get the official release in Christmas…

  • Kurosh Dec 14, 2015

    Hi,

Can someone please answer the headless question that keeps getting posted on every Kodi update but yet to be answered…

When will headless functionality be available? In particular, on Windows.

    Thank you

    • Simon Dec 17, 2015

I’d given up on waiting for this to happen, so tried Plex but really missed DVD playback and some of the add-ons, then I stumbled upon EMBY! It’s android app has some way to go yet, but I use the plugin to give me the full metadata experience in KODI, and for everything else I fall back on the EMBY app.

EMBY gives me a headless media server offering DLNA, transcoding and chromecast support. For me it’s the perfect solution!

  • Edward Dec 14, 2015

ok, youtube to play 1080 quality videos when will you enable ,that possibility?

  • Atreyu Dec 14, 2015

This build is now part of my daily enjoyments.
Cheers, guys, really excited about developments!

  • SmoothSinner Dec 15, 2015

I don’t know if you guys get reports but my kodi screen would usually go bad after I pause it or while watching a video. Also, my video card would fail and recover because of Kodi. I’m using W10 64bit and I must say my computer is solid with 32GB of rams to say the least. I hope this info help you guys. This also happen on both my laptop and PC. The other one running version 15 is fine. Keep up the great work.

    • 24K Dec 16, 2015

I have the same issues with beta’s of Jarvis.
      Going back to Isengard.
      Also on W10Pro x64

  • Robert Dec 15, 2015

I just installad the Jarvis beta 4 on my Ubuntu. Until beta 3 everything was perfect – MANY THANKS TO THE KODI-TEAM. My problem now: after the installation of beta 4 I cannot load any pvr-manager. I used dvbviewer until beta 3 – now it is not loading any more. I tried dvblink – in beta 4 it does not load.
On my windows-client i have although installed beta 4 – no problems with pvr.
So perhaps you can solve it :-)

  • dilu Dec 15, 2015

Will Jarvis have the Crop Black Bars Feature again?

  • Jordy Kleian Dec 15, 2015

    Hi all,

I have installed Kodi 16 beta 4 on a windows 10 machine, and all works very well.
But I cannot find any power management settings for system or PVR.
Which I did have in Beta 3 (running on Win7). Could somebody confirm this.

    Regards Jordy

  • Cheryl Dec 16, 2015

What happen to the lastest movies in the 15.2 kodi? Why the new look?

    • Atreyu Dec 16, 2015

Kodi doesn’t provide content and the look is definately the same ;-)

    • BJ Dec 19, 2015

Why are so many people so, uh, not very intelligent?

      • Klojum Dec 19, 2015

        Perhaps it’s a blond thing.

  • BobJack Dec 16, 2015

I can’t believe Chromecast support hasn’t been mentioned in the comments section yet. I would have figured it was a bot doing it. :-p

  • daddyrod28 Dec 17, 2015

I’m having problems with the play on 15.2 the movie plays for 15 minutes then cuts kodi off could it be the skin I’m using or because of all the new updates? I’ll wait for 16 to finish with all the kinks then I’ll get it

    • Michael Nunez Dec 17, 2015

I’m having the same issue with my 15.2, could it possibly be the build i am using?

    • Atreyu Dec 19, 2015

      This is a Jarvis blog

  • Anthony Dec 18, 2015

Does anybody know if the beta has directx 11 yet ?

    • Atreyu Dec 19, 2015

All Jarvis builds are dx11, and there is also a Isengard dx11 build on the downloads page

  • SmoothSinner Dec 19, 2015

Please add “Always On Top” feature. Thanks

    • JohnK Dec 19, 2015

Once again, yes for “always on top” subsetting to Fullscreen option to NOT minimize Kodi while using another screen.

  • Robert Edmunds Dec 19, 2015

Kodi 16 Beta 4 has broken several of my addons. Please can you release Kodi 16 final soon so I can get these fixed?

    Many thanks

  • Sanjay Dec 20, 2015

Dear martijn. Thank you for your great work of adding dts hd to jarvis 16. I hope the dolby true HD option will be added down the road to the arm version so that I can play every sound format on my nvidia shield tv.
Thank you for all the hard work and have a great christmas and new year.

  • Craig Dec 21, 2015

I’m glad the Goom visualiser is now available on Kodi however it doesn’t fill the entire TV screen. Around an inch is missing from the left hand side and the top.

  • Lady Boy Dec 21, 2015

    1. Really need a web browser.
    2. Need Jarvis to be fixed for Chrome Launcher.
    3. Need Netflix to work the right way.

  • Konstigt Dec 22, 2015

Still quite buggy on my NVIDIA Shield, for example audio that doesn’t start on 5.1 using passthrough (intermittently) but does work with 2.1 with passthrough disabled.

Please add (official) feature to report bugs from within app, cumbersome process!

  • SmoothSinner Dec 24, 2015

Is this where to provide feedback? Is someone taking note? I have a two high end desktop and laptop. Desktop has 32gb of ram, and top video card. The laptop has 16gb of rams with outstanding video card and more. When I run the betas 3, and now 4, the screen would normally go black though I can hear sound. Then I have to force close it. It happens on both. If I go back to version 15, then no more problems. I tried to give feedback before but I don’t know if the right people are taking notes here. I tried beta #3 I had that problem and it wasn’t fixed on beta#4 .

  • mazey Dec 27, 2015

4:3 content ZOOM function no longer works, acts like 16:9 nonlinear on android arm. i prefer the zoom funciton of 15.2 as i dont mind losing abit of the top and bottom and being zoomed as the image looks correct and not squashed. thx

  • Sam Dec 28, 2015

It would be nice if you would quit trying to pump out multiple versions.
Concentrate on one and make it flawless.

    • Martijn Dec 28, 2015

      Feel free to help then

    • Tyrone Walton Dec 30, 2015

Yes, that is what I say.

  • ToddeSwe Dec 28, 2015

    Hi!

Installed it on my Windows 10 PC and it crashed after 10 secs.

    • ToddeSwe Dec 28, 2015

If you are interested i have saved the logfile. Just contact me with the mail i supplied here.

  • al Dec 28, 2015

Good work! keep those updates flowing.

PS ,Holy shit did the global average IQ just plummet or did we hit an AOL bubble?
Seriously a lot of the comments here are moronic at best.

DON’T UPGRADE TO BETA version unless you are interested in helping to debug and know the correct way to search and report.

  • JB Dec 29, 2015

I am new to Kodi, recently installed Version 15.2 on a Windows 10 64-bit laptop. Kodi is truly amazing, and I have only scratched the surface of its unique array of functions. Very polished and intuitive, with a forward thinking vision. Thank you for your tireless efforts and expertise in developing this evolving technical wonder.

    Happy New Year!

  • 2635599 Jan 03, 2016

is 16 finally going to close properly on 10? it’s annoying to click on shutdown and have it crash instead of closing properly.

  • SmoothSinner Jan 05, 2016

Keep crashing after I installed it again. I should have stayed with 15.2. As always, It keep crashing my Nvidia graphic card. Windows 10 has a message that says it has blocked Kodi.exe from accessing the graphic card hardware.

  • MIchael Jan 05, 2016

Love Kodi been using for years (xbmc, etc) one issue that is holding up me finally fully converting my household off WMC….live TV and PVR. I know we have lots of PVR addons and such..but cant seem to get here in the US, a good EPG feed (without tapping the Windows MC one that will likely die as Win7 support goes away). Trying to create the simple Remote UI, usability that WMC yes (no not a windows fanboy and I know how lame it is) but for the rest of my family, WMC just works…(but will die soon) so I am scrambling trying to play with so many addons and such to recreate something like that….any advice?

  • HDMan Jan 05, 2016

I am experimenting with Kodi as a PVR front end. With Microsoft continuing their quest to become irrelevant WMC seems to be going away.

For me “table stakes” includes at least the ability to do “series recording”. I have installed the released version, Beta4 and now a daily build from Jan 1 (Windows front end) and have tried both MythTV and TVHeadend (debian linux, latest) but I still see no series recording options.

I’ve seen screenshots including series recording options, so I’m guessing I’m just doing something wrong, but after 1 week of trying I still only see a simple choice of “record” and “stop recording” for the pvr.mythtv and the tvheadend pvr client.

I am running the January 4th daily build of Kodi and have MythTV 27.5 as a backend.

This post is my “throwing in the towel” and asking for help, please re-direct me if my post is misplaced.

Please point me to a solution.

Aside from this issue, your software looks brilliant, thanks!

    HDMan

    • Patrick Jan 09, 2016

      HDMan,
I’m not on beta (Not the time to make sure my different versions stay on the same DB), but for me on MythTV client, I went to the context menu and selected “Client Actions”. There it allows me to select to record on a recurrent level (I.E. Series)

  • VonMagnum Jan 06, 2016

Is there an actual forum to report bugs/problems with these Betas? The support areas don’t really seem geared around Beta reports since they are entirely platform specific.

The ARM Beta 4 version takes 3x-20x longer to start movie files on my Fire TV Stick than 15.2 (OS X version seems fine by comparison but it’s running files locally). LOTR extended DVD versions were the worst by far and took over a minute to start (compared to only about 5 seconds on 15.2 by comparison). Other movies that took 3 seconds to start now take 6-9 seconds, etc.

On both OS X and ARM, the on-screen display still shows “5.1″ for 7.1 files (everywhere else it reads correctly now).

DTS 6.1 showed correctly in 15.2 and still does on the OS X version, but the ARM version usually sees “DTS Stereo” in the audio selection panel (the OSD shows 6.1 still though, but automatic preference sorting based on the “best” soundtrack picks Dolby Digital 5.1 over “DTS Stereo” (even though it’s 6.1 in reality) because of that. If I use Subler to import the DTS 6.1 track instead, Subler then sees 5.1 in the selection panel and menus instead of 2-channel and oddly so does the ARM beta of Kodi so there appears to be a link. One movie (The Haunting) does show up correctly, though for unknown reasons as Subler still shows 2-channel there. Again, the OS X version doesn’t have this problem at all (except 7.1 showing as 5.1 on the OSD), just the beta ARM versions.

  • hidalgo67 Jan 10, 2016

I’m running Jarvis 16 beta 4 on Windows 10 and MediaPortal as a backend. If I start a recording per epg while the program is running yet, it creates a timer entry but never starts the timer.

  • liam Jan 11, 2016

I am running kodi jarvis beta 4 arm. on a minix x8. when watching videos from my library most of the time the video plays with no sound for the first 60 seconds or so. also can happen if i pause and play again.
i have found that when there is no sound i can pause and start immediately to get the sound on again. this is a pain when it happens every time i want to watch something in my library.

  • James Jan 28, 2016

    Hi,
I’m new here and new to Kodi after someone turned me on to it on my Phone. Was into home theater big time 10 years ago, but stopped when we had our Son and I had no time. blah blah balh Anyway, its amazing to me how many people are complaining about problems they are having after installing 16 .4 It’s a beta version for gods sake. Released so that people can help report bugs and problems that can be fixed before the final version. Even an idiot like me knows that. Don’t install a Beta version if you’re not installing it to help the community or can’t deal with the bugs. Wait for the final release. So many of these people also seem very unappreciative of all of the hard work these folks put into developing Kodi. I’m sorry, do you want a refund? Oh that’s right, it’s open source and doesn’t cost you anything and they donate all of their time and talent to make it better with every release. You should be on your knees thanking them for what they have done and propose to do, rather than complaining about a function here or there that doesn’t work. I digress. Some of us appreciate and are amazed at the generosity that you display by working so hard to create great software like Kodi, for free and then give it away to anyone who wants to use it. Thank You for your time, effort and generosity. Keep up the great work! Kodi is amazingly awesome!
