Kodi 16.0 beta 5 – Last Jarvis beta

Posted By: Martijn Kaijser on Jan 11, 2016 in Site News

With this announcement we are releasing the last beta in the Jarvis line before we are switching to Release Candidates. We hope the feedback from users regarding this beta is positive since we as team can’t test all use cases ourselves. As such we wan’t to thank all the users who helped us find the biggest blockers before we can move towards the Release Candidates.

Why the rapid succession of these releases you might wonder? By doing more releases in the shorter period we reduce the amount of changes that are included in each one. Instead of a huge list of changes it now only has several which gives a better overview. The advantage of that is possible regressions get picked up way faster and that you as user also get the benefit of not having to wait a long time to get these fixes.
This Release Early Release Often (RERO) is what we as a team have decided to go forward with as we see the benefits of this approach. Our developers don’t have to wait a very long time before their features get included in a release and you a user will also get to try them out without having to wait many months. Enough about the RERO approach as we’ll soon devote a special review about this.

This we only have a small list of fixes that made it into this last beta.

Fixes done in this beta 5:

  • • Improved: better remote keymap for longpress functionality
  • • Fixed: correctly save skin setting when changing profiles
  • • Fixed: prefer forced subtitle in settings was not working
  • • Fixed: prevent crash on scanning certain mp3 files
  • • Fixed: correct numeric input in some PVR windows
  • • Fixed: better handling of some rotated recorded video files
  • • Fixed: fixed non working deinterlacer for DXVA on Windows
  • • Fixed: certain animated GIF files wouldn’t display correctly
  • • Fixed: a variety of code fixes that are too technical to mention

Visit the other announcements listed below for previous beta fixes.

A lot of changes went in Kodi 16. Removing old code, splitting up parts in more logical chunks and making it all more resilient to future changes. All these changes are part of a massive change list that only makes sense to developers actually knowing what the source code does. In short we will no bother you all with summing up the list. It’s just something that is worth mentioning that not all improvements have to be actual features and are visible to users. We prefer that the program actually works than adding bells and whistles.

Improvements so far in version 16

More in depth information can be found through the following links about the 16 release.

General: So far in version 16 there are no add-on changes that would impact any add-ons except for PVR. Since our 12.x Frodo release there have been some gradual changes but in general all add-ons, even from that time should still work, of course there are some exceptions. If the add-ons worked in Gotham, Helix and Isengard then we are happy to say that all these add-ons should still work.

Skins: Sadly due to the amount of changes we’ll have to announce that skins will have certain parts non working. This beta will mark any version 15 skin as incompatible and will ask you to switch back to Confluence. This means that for you to continue using Kodi 16.0 you will have to switch back to Confluence or wait till the skin you use has been updated in our repository. Good new however is that a variety of skin have already start updating to latest changes.
The following skins are already updated for version 16 and will auto-update when you upgrade. We’re sure more will follow soon.

  • • Aeon Nox 5
  • • AppTV
  • • Black Glass Nova
  • • Chroma
  • • Confluence
  • • Eunique
  • • KOver
  • • Mimic
  • • Nebula
  • • Rapier
  • • re-Touched
  • • Titan
  • • Transparency!

If you use these builds, we encourage you to report problems with these builds on our forum first and after that, if asked, submit bugs on Trac (following this guide: How to submit a bug report). Do note that we need detailed information so we can investigate the issue. We also appreciate providing support in our Forums where you can. You can of course also follow or help promote Kodi on all available social networks. Read more on the get involved page.
We are always happy to receive a donation by which you show your support and appreciation. • ThoMas Jan 11, 2016

I’m not getting any Audio (Menu,Movies) with my Sony Android TV (2015).

  • joe Jan 11, 2016

how is the state of the audio dsp plugin?

    • wisler Jan 15, 2016

Most platforms are shipped with AudioDSP add-ons except Android.

This week I got a NVidia Shield for developing. It will need some time to figure out how to develop and port these add-ons to android.

  • Rob A Jan 11, 2016

Nice job guys….can’t wait for the new version.

    Thank you….KODI team…

  • Patt Jan 11, 2016

And looks like no audio on bluetooth in Android still not fixed? :/

  • Omar N Jan 11, 2016

Tks guys for all the work put in to this update and kodi as a whole. It’s fantastic!

  • 1maynard Jan 11, 2016

That sounds great. I started using Jarvis 16.4 last week after having issues with 15.2 and so far it has been very stable. Will update to 16.5 later tonight. Keep up the good work.

  • bazzz Jan 11, 2016

Could anyone look into libgif.so on the Nvidia Shield TV running any version of

the Jarvis Beta’s.I cannot get GIFS to work in Jarvis. They work fine on all other

    OS Windows,OpenELEC,OSX etc,etc I’m not sure if it’s a limitation on some

newer Android devices like the Shield and the Minix Neo U1 I’m seeing the same

    issue on.Both non-rooted,would I need to compile this into a build?Or can

anyone help me out please.Thanx for the continued great work as always.

  • Ben Toy Jan 11, 2016

Thank you! Still wishing to improve the karaoke player. =)

  • Fritz Jan 12, 2016

great work. glad to help (I put feedback in the forum directly) This looks like a great step in the direction of the “new” media manager. I see so many changes it is becoming less and less like what has come before. Truly this project has matured to a state where it is a viable option for the masses (which is bittersweet).

    • jeff Jan 12, 2016

      I see You!

  • David Shuttleworth Jan 12, 2016

I have just installed the NEO X8-H PLUS ACCORDING to the instructions. (I hope) I am unable to turn it on. Where on the box is this LED light to show me it is on. Can anyone help?

    • Malcolm Jan 12, 2016

It’s a blue led light on the side of the unit next to the button. I held the button in a few seconds and the unit came on.

The Blue LED is hard to see unless you are very close to the unit, it’s not bright at all.

Hope this reply is of some help?

    • Malcolm Jan 12, 2016

Sorry the position of the Blue Led is at the front and not on the side as I said in my previous post. The MINIX shown on top should be facing you and the LED is on the right hand side at the front. The power button is on the right hand side panel as you look at the unit.

Hold the power button in until the blue front LED lights up. (you might want to be close to the unit to see it as it isn’t that bright)

Really sorry for my previous post by not giving you the correct info. Hope this is of more help?

  • sergio Jan 12, 2016

Hello, big up for your hard work guys !!!!!

Just waiting for Audio Dsp plugins !!!!!!

    Kodi is so great !

    • wisler Jan 15, 2016

Why waiting? On most platforms you can test/use AudioDSP add-ons.

      Only Android is missing :-)

  • Jordan Jan 12, 2016

  • Mmick Jan 12, 2016

    Thank you very much.

Though every single version after v14 doesn’t work well stable with my Amlogic S812 Android tv box. Sometimes a h264 file works better (without stutter) with AMCODEC ON and sometimes OFF!

With MX Player and XBMC v14 they work fine, after v15.x it has this issue. Kann people at least put at shortcut when playing a movie so I can turn it on/off in the moment ???

    Thank you very much

  • Mauricio Jan 12, 2016

I have an android TV box, using an old kodi program. My question is if I can download the program Kodi 16 beta 5. If so can you tell me how

  • Jay Jan 12, 2016

This really screwed up my music collection. Its like Kodi is pulling from Artists tags (like beta4) and pulling from Album Artist tag as well. It was working so nicely in Beta4.

  • Reza Jan 12, 2016

I want answers RIGHT NOW I felt like we’ve found something much better than hulu or Netflix and now you are giving us the finger and you have the nerves to not answer our questions

      • Martijn Jan 12, 2016

This is not a helpdesk section and you cannot demand anything from us

      • KODI User Jan 12, 2016

If it doesn’t work, you can put in an application for your money back.

If you read the FAQ you’ll find out about the debug logs. You’ll also find out that your crash is probably caused by one of your add-ons.

Shouting and screaming always gets the best responses on here. Open the window and scream loudly and the KODI Repair Squad will soon be flying to your aid.

        • KODI User Jan 12, 2016

I think YouTube is a better place for you really. Don’t think you really get what the word “community” means.

When you want KODI to run non-official add-ons the way you are then you will need to also learn how to deal with those non-offical addons. Psychic-Support only goes so far… which is where there is a forum for deeper support to work out what is “special” about your system.

I think I hear your Mum calling you down for your dinner.

      • Yaffle Jan 14, 2016

One of the rudest messages I’ve read for a long time.

If you have problems, register with the forums and ask there … chances are that you’ll get a response within 48 hours and not five months (although I appreciate that’s not as quick as you’d like given your four ‘demand’ messages on one day here). But no-one has any idea what hardware, software or addons you’re using, and so cannot possibly help you – leaving aside your utterly childish way of stamping your breath and shouting.

      • ginnz Jan 21, 2016

Wow… demanding?? with that kind of attitude, you don’t deserve SQUAT. As a matter of fact. throw away whatever junk you have KODI running on, and get a commercial STB and start paying for TV. You dont’t deserve what KODI has to offer IMO….

        • ginnz Jan 21, 2016

BTW, A BIG THANK YOU to all the KODI developers! KODI XBMC is the greatest thing thats come out for my entertainment unit / PC ever! I used to run a satellite DVB pci card in my system using softcam’s back in the day, and since the hole’s have been closed, internet TV has been a rather weak solution, untill now! KODI is simply AWESOME! thanks for all the hard work, and such a well put together, sweet looking application! KODI ROCKS!

      • jun Jan 21, 2016

great work as always kodi dev guys. keep doing what you are doing and just ignore, as always, fools like this sergio.

      • bazzz Jan 21, 2016

You are joking with that attitude Sergio?? Some real ungrateful people out there.

  • Blabla Jan 12, 2016

thanks for all your efforts/time and your hard work <3
    keep up the good work

  • Digitallogics666 Jan 12, 2016

Great Job Thank you for your Time and your Work on Kodi for all the User,s

  • Geoff Jan 12, 2016

Just an FYI, I am running windows 10 and a clean Kodi install. With 15.2 I had no issues. With Jarvis, all versions, when I shut off my receiver and TV, the screen is black when I come back. The only way to get it back is to reboot the machine, or sometimes it responds to the toggling of full screen and window. I have opened this as an issue in the forum and have see it on 3 computers, but have gotten no response regarding it. I have been a long time user and supporter, and am surprised by this one. Just wanted to share (and I tried to do it the official way too) I have reinstalled 15.2 and it is working fine again, so it seems to me it has to be something with Jarvis. Thanks for the great product!

    • Paul Jan 13, 2016

I had this issue as well on windows 10 with the last beta. My workaround was to hit “s” on my keyboard to bring up the settings menu, then hit the “back” key to get to the main menu (which would result in the black screen again), then hit “Back” again and all was good. I ended up uninstalling the beta and going back to 15.2. I was waiting for this release to see if it was fixed but it seems not, I’ll give the RC a try when it comes out.
BTW to the Kodi devs, thanks for all your continuing hard work bringing us this great software and making HTPC’s easy to use. Unlike the child shouting above, the majority of us appreciate your efforts :)

      • Geoff Jan 14, 2016

Agreed Whole Heartedly Paul. And glad to see I am not alone. :)

    • Mmick Jan 13, 2016

Disable hdmi-cec on all your devices (tv + receiver, etc) and try again.

Kodi reacts very bad when it is running on windows or Android, and the device is sent to standby through hdmi-cec (when you turn off a receiver or tv with that capability, it will seems through hdmi a signal for all devices connected to do the same).

I don’t know if it is the case, but on my tv box I have that issue. I also have an Amlogic S812 that with acceleration on sometimes have issues with Kodi 15 and 16. XBMC 14.x were the most stable for me.

      • Paul Jan 13, 2016

        Cool thanks :) I’ll give it a try :)

      • Geoff Jan 14, 2016

Thanks for the advice. I just looked and have none of those turned on. I am guessing this will be seen by a lot more people after the release, and hopefully it is fixed. It is so destructive, It is better to stay on 15 sadly. :(

        • Paul Jan 19, 2016

I’m running this beta on my windows 10 box and no issues so far (beyond what you’d expect with a beta on the windows – the occasional freeze but nothing serious). No sign of the black screen yet. Fingers crossed!

  • xOnur Jan 13, 2016

Kodi crashs in 15.2 if you disable tv while you’re watching

    pls fix it :)

    • Martijn Jan 13, 2016

      Try 16 beta5

  • Jon Jan 13, 2016

When will we see Kodi on Apple TV4 ?

  • B Jan 13, 2016

Great work everyone! Nice to see the incremental updates continue. Fingers crossed that some day that pesky ticket regarding the proxy settings not working when using on a Fire TV gets closed.

  • Martin Jan 14, 2016

Great to see that the new version is around but to be honest, having confluence skin as the default one in 2016 is an embarrassment. I know it’s light and works ok (and you can change it of course) but come on, with so many beatiful interface made by the community and other projects like Plex, Emby, etc it seems crazy that it’s still not updated. At least a revamped version with a similar structure!

    • Mmick Jan 14, 2016

      I agree. XBMC/Kodi have been updated and upgraded, but the default Skin didn´t (at least that people can call it in the that way);

What I still miss in Kodi v16:
      1) a lot more advanced yet clean Skin
      2) Advanced Video/Audio Settings through the playing video windows. Eg: AMCODEC on v15 and on v16 have issues with h264, sometimes it lags when ON, sometimes lags with it OFF. To change this (and other) video settings I have to go back to main screen, settings, video etc etc. The same when I want to change my audio output to for example Bluetooth and it doesn´t do it automatically. If people with a PC and remote with a lot of buttons this is only a [email protected] in the …, if you have a standard Android TV Box with a simple remote, it will be unpleasant.
      3) Add-On shortcuts on the main screen (as Music, Video, etc, also the possibility to add Add-Ons directly)

      The most important for everyone
      4) centralized database with CLEAN function. Kodi after a while has THOUSANDS of files and will become fat, VERY fat. Most devices where Kodi will be installed (Android TV Box, older PCs as Media Center, etc) have limited local storage, and usually a slow one like older HDDs or relative slow eMMCs.

4.1) Add-ons old “packages” clean function
4.2) Thumbnails + Actor/Film info on one file (up to FAT32 size limit, that it would had a second one, perhaps A-M + N-Z another one), with clean function that will delete everything that doesn´t exist anymore.
4.3) Add-ons/Skin standards: use of image and video size limit (some add-ons have some small video sequences when opening them) and max file number per Add-On to something normal! I have some add-ons with hundreds of unoptimized image files. Some of them I made the optimization myself. Result almost 80% size reduction. There are people who makes Add-ons with one picture-per-icon…
4.4) “Global Clean” option that would consist cleaning everything that could be cleaned as optimizing the database, old files, old add-on packages leaving just the last one.
4.5) On settings > Add-On > choose how many old packages´ versions should be left as backup (1, 2, 3…)
4.6) On settings > Backup & Restore > Backup All (exactly as Kodi is to be able to mirror later after an update from firmware, or mirror on another PC) / Backup Settings / Backup Filme&Actor Database / Backup Skins)

    • Psych05 Jan 19, 2016

Agree 100%. I love Kodi and support it all the way, but the default skin needs evolve with it.

  • vinitkumar Jan 14, 2016

    Kodi 16 beta5 is great.

  • fanour Jan 14, 2016

I was using 16 alpha switch to 16 beta5 will test and report .
    thank you

  • DonBob Jan 15, 2016

When the letter “L” is the new alphabetical letter used for that iteration of KODI, I suggest “LARVA”, since a larva eventually evolves into a higher form of itself….up too late…need coffee…

  • Soliter26 Jan 16, 2016

Hi, just one question. Is there any description regarding DSP addons, how to setup, for what hardware or equipment it is appropriate, how it is occurred in kodi via GUI, etc, because I can not find anything like that in kodi wiki.

  • Soliter26 Jan 16, 2016

Because, when I activate those DSP addons, nothing happens at all.

  • DoubleP Jan 16, 2016

Hi there thanks a lot for the wonderful job.

For information my mouse.xml keymap is now ignored after updating from beta 4 to beta 5 (Ubuntu).
Rollbacked to isenguard stable, it’s now OK. Sorry if it’s not right to log this tiny issue here.

  • Ash Jan 17, 2016

Can you guys please address the playback issues experienced by android rk3188 users since Kodi 15?

    • Martijn Jan 17, 2016

Contact rockchip so they fix their issues

  • Blepharocyte Jan 17, 2016

Si Nice guys, tank you for your work…

One add-on is missed on Kodi : Spotify… Please some one do it ! Spotimc is just to buggy…

  • SmoothSinner Jan 17, 2016

Very good but it’s still crashing my nvdia cards on both desktop and laptop. I have high end laptop and desktop gaming with latest tech.

    • Paul Jan 18, 2016

The same thing is also happening to me on a Windows 7 Ultimate custom built desktop. Has anything you tried worked to potentially fix the problem?

    • Ateryu Jan 18, 2016

This is something i have noticed, as well.
In 15.2 (and prior) Kodi could be left running overnight, and would still be fine the next day.
With 16 (any Beta or latest RC) Kodi will carsh every time.

I figured this would be a temporary condition, but i don’t think any of the devs leave Kodi running overnight, or this would have surfaced earlier….

For now, i have Kodi autorestart at night….

  • phil78 Jan 18, 2016

    Kodi 17 alpha 1 / NPVR 3.6.6
Regression : option to record TV series in the guide is not available

    • phil78 Jan 19, 2016

The feature is always enable under the title “add timer”. I’ve confused with the feature “record”.

  • Gagi Jan 18, 2016

After using this version over my stable one I keep getting “Exception caught on main loop exiting” while trying to play any video. Wouldn’t recommend it.

  • daniko Jan 18, 2016

please put equalizer on audio side, and make close app much faster, when close app he running in background for 30 sec or more before close definitley, sorry for my bed english…

  • Vito Jan 19, 2016

Here is what I noticed so far in Kodi 16 beta 5. It’s more stable and runs faster then Kodi 15.2. GOOD JOB!

  • Detail Jan 19, 2016

2 problems with 16 jarvis in shield and 4k tv:

1.watching Photo on 4k tv results in 1080 output from kodi.

    2. Kodi does output [email protected] when playing 4k60p files

  • Simon Jan 19, 2016

seems to be a regression somewhere between 20160105.efbb55d-16b5 and 20160113.fe2fa28-16rc1 as scrolling through movies is really slow even on quad core. still present in git20160117.9d50c19-16rc1

  • SmoothSinner Jan 20, 2016

I really don’t know if anyone important is taking notes. Since the first beta, Kodi kept crashing my video card on both my High Ends desktop and laptop gaming system. It doesn’t get any better than my systems for now. Since this is the last beta and the issue hasn’t been resolved, many of us might be left behind.

  • JohnWH Jan 20, 2016

all the colors are messed up on video and live tv in kodi 16 beta 5. Everything has a green tint, no idea what is going on. I have tried full clean installs and the results are still the same. Kodi 15.2 works perfectly, as did other releases.

    • thewarm Jan 23, 2016

This happened to me on my older work system. I fixed it by going to settings, video, acceleration, and changing the render method to ‘software’.
      Good luck

      • surebud Jan 30, 2016

thank you thewarm i had the same green tint problem you fixed it thanks again

  • vauwe Jan 20, 2016

Thanks for your great work, I would kindly aprreciate to find an addon which allows to select output modes: Movies I would like to send to the internal Player of my TV BOX (Himedia Q10 Andoird 4.4). But Music I would like to DLNA push to my Yamaha CD500N Network musik player. Push is necessary, so that I can controll my audio collection from within Kodi which is very nice.

A workaround for later exits http://kinkeadtech.com/2015/11/how-to-stream-kodi-to-chromecast-xbox-one-dlna-devices/ , but thus need to copy a file in the userdata folder in which already is the same fil for playback on the internal player. So it is very uncomfortable to copy this files every time the output chances.

    Thank you

  • nooryani84 Jan 20, 2016

Have been using it a few days and I haven’t experienced any issues. Then again, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced issues with any beta/RC release on Windows.

  • SmoothSinner Jan 21, 2016

I’m going to do a clean install to see if Kodi will still crash my video card.

  • SmoothSinner Jan 21, 2016

The clean install seemed to have worked. I’m gonna monitor it to see it Kodi will crash the video card. I thought there was no need for clean install. So far so good. Stay tuned!

  • Hussein Jan 23, 2016

Can you guys add keyboard layout based on numbers, like the old cell phones? This would be great feature for people who have normal remote control.

  • MO Jan 26, 2016

    Hello Kodi Team,
    Kodi is Awesome!!!
    But I have a Problem on 15.2.
I have Issues in the Live-Tv section.
Everytime I Created a Favorite Group or sorted out of the Channels…after restart all was gone to default… its isnt saved the setting like I wished.I am using it with the Simple Client.
Is this thing solved in version 16 too?

my android TV box has a clean install Jarvis 16 rc2. Android 4.2 system mk902 RKO magic box. when I switch between Kodi and one of these, browser, YouTube, email and come back to Kodi watch I had on it at the time, it reboots/reloads back to home page on Kodi. Anyone know why? Old Kodi didn’t do this,I could go right back to wherever I was on Kodi, like watching show. Help, is there a fix for this?
