kodi16.0-jarvis-alpha

Development never ceases on Kodi, and so we’re delighted to present the 3rd alpha for Kodi 16 with features and fixes galore.

Long Press

More and more hardware companies are coming out with remote controls with a very limited button set. In particular, all current Android TVs are lacking a dedicated context menu button altogether. To deal with this, we’ve taken a page from the touchscreen UX and added a long press feature to remote controls. Now, if you press and hold the OK/Enter button for a few seconds, you will pull up the context menu. In the future, long press may be extended for additional functionality. For a better view of what this means, see the following video.

Additional Fixes/Changes

Here’s a quick look at a few other notable fixes and features.

  • • Three finger touchpad mapping in iOS to make room for new tablet gestures which will be available in Alpha 4 to complement existing tablet gestures.
  • • Kodi now supports being compiled with Xcode 7
  • • The Kodi GUI now supports a new stereoscopic depth effect for users of Kodi on 3D TVs or VR headsets
  • • The Music Library and Files View for music have now been unified, similar to how video files and library are unified
  • • Extended support for browsing movies by country and through UPnP as well as user-ratings which we be added in future versions.

Needless to say, this is not the entire list of fixes and features for Alpha 3, but that list is quite long and tends to focus on under-the-hood items that are mostly of interest to other devs, skinners, and add-on writers. As these under-the-hood changes begin to work their way up to the user experience, we’ll do our best to detail them here.

Conclusion

I can report that the new Alpha seems to work well for me, and seems to improve the efficiency of software decoding of HEVC, which is much needed on my older system. Top stuff. I do have a question though – are there any plans to address the Digital TV PVR Teletext issues? In it’s current state it’s unusable but it would be great if this were fixed for the final release – there’s a lot of people out there with poor hearing who would find this immensely valuable. The code is there, it just needs some shoehorning to work well within the UI.

On second thought, still struggling with H265 1080p video. After some time the video and audio desyncs on an Intel E7400. No problems in VLC.

First, thank you very much for adding the option to not display movie sets/collections with only 1 movie
It was a very tedious task for me correct them manually on 50+ collections
    Now it works great
Also, the default option you set seems good.

Btw, when you have time, please add the new GUI strings to Transifex so we can start translating them

    Thank you

    Less alpha, more final.

    Finish 14.2

    • Nathan Betzen Oct 04, 2015

I definitely hope this is some kind of not very good joke.

      • Kalliban Oct 04, 2015

Haha yeah, it will be released when it’s finished. Nobody wants a rushed release, let them take all the time it needs! The username is quite fitting though :P

OT: Awesome work, Kodi really is something special!

  • liquidskin76 Oct 04, 2015

Don’t forget DTS-HD MA decoding as well ;) Option to decode full MA track instead of DTS core is awesome for those who are not using passthrough. Excellent, many thanks!

  • Frank Werner Oct 04, 2015

What about rating music while it plays? A very long expected feature to get the WMC-Users…

    • Martijn Oct 04, 2015

That’s already available since a long time for regular albums and songs

  • Dave Sutherland Oct 04, 2015

    Thanks Kodi

    @liquidskin76

is passthrough best option to select if available to maintain original quality for 7.1 dts hd-ma?

  • Chocco Oct 06, 2015

Is kodi decoding dts HD master audio and truehd instead of my amp (the new function in jarvis) and sending to my amp as “multi channel in 7.1″ IDENTICAL to bitstreaming to my amp and decoding it there? Is there any quality lost whatsoever decoding in kodi? Thanks very much.

I have noticed this build crashing on my Samsung tablet with android 5.1 as well as on the new amazon fire tv with the amazon is 5. I went back to 15.2 and the crasking stopped.

  • Matt Oct 14, 2015

    “Long Press” great idea!

On the Nexus Player, I’d love to see long-press for the back button to exit Kodi.

  • Chocco Oct 14, 2015

Hi, Nvidia have now implemented passthrough support for Dts HD MA and Dolby Truehd in its native player in the nvidia shield android tv but needs kodi and other apps to adjust API (did I get that right?) in order to passthrough from kodi to the shield. Will this be implemented in jarvis do you think? I know you’re designing things specifically with the nvidia shield in mind. Thanks very much

  • Blu Oct 17, 2015

Really liking Jarvis. I hope the auto frame bug gets fixed for the Nvidia shield TV very soon.

  • Blu Oct 18, 2015

  • Simon Ireland Nov 29, 2015

    Thank you everyone who contributed.
    Will it come with DSP?
I use a Raspberry Pi in headless mode. Would be brilliant to be able to have audio AGC and more.

  • AJAy Dec 14, 2015

  • Martin Jan 10, 2016

I love the new 16 ver. I had to go there because of a strange happening. I use a droid T8 box. After using 15.2 without issue for weeks, i turned it on today and when i clicked Kodi it went to either a black screen or when trying to get to submenus, a black screen. The play menu went away when playing a movie. I did the Kodi force stop, clear cache, reinstalled several times, it simply would not run. I then downloaded ver 16, and hello…everything is fine and back to normal.
I will certainly donate, you guys are awesome..any ideas on what happened to my 15.2.

can you please let me know if there are any settings that i need to change in kodi for android tv in order to play 4k video from a NAS? at the moment it stutters a lot and by using other players, it works very good so this is for sure a kodi problem. also in other video players, even the image quality looks better than the one in kodi (not too much different). can you please help me with this? thank you
