Kodi 17 – Code name has been chosen

Thanks for all your suggestions!
We decided to go with the most popular suggestion from the community and have selected

    Krypton

as the code name for Kodi v17!

Since the dawn of time, or at least since 2008 each released version has received a code name next to the version number. Giving each development iteration a code name in a certain category is kind of a tradition that is not only applicable for software but also for hardware. Google does so for Android and Intel also names their chips. Who are we to break this tradition and as such we follow in their  steps with a theme that started out with mythical places or  names.

With Kodi v16 Jarvis almost being final (just waiting on some fixes) we’ ll need a new code name that will be added to v17 which our developers are already working on. Don’ t worry we’ ll still look after any bug that might pop up in Jarvis and try to fix it first.

History

Below are the code names we have used in the past to give you an idea.

As you can see we now arrived at the next version that will start with the letter K. We thought it might be a good idea to ask the users to send in suggestions on what the next code name should be. You can post your suggestions on our forum here

So up to you to suggest a great code name that will be added to Kodi v17

hey a lot of people were posting the name krypton i also think it should be called kryipton i like the name, and a lot of people were posting coments tht say they like the name so why doesnt the kodi dev team use that name and post the betas for v17 in this forum or somewhere else on the site for the public, and can the kodi dev team also put the “version name (when its decieded)” chosen by the public becuase u asked the public for the new nme of kodi i think we have a winner ,and i also like iot but it should be kyrton bc it also strats with a k and a lot of people liked it and posted that they liked it ,and i also like it ,so kodi dev team plz go with kryton as the name for v17,from matthew pitsicalis

    Kinetix
She is part of the Legion of SuperHeros.
Kinetix possessed telekinetic abilities, which she primarily used to manipulate and reshape solid matter with her thoughts. As a Terrorform, her abilities were undefined, partially as they are reactive to the circumstances she is in. She has been shown to possess healing abilities, flight, greatly enhanced strength, the ability to survive unaided in space, and control of gravity. It was revealed in the Legion of the Three Worlds mini-series that Kinetix had absorbed the magics of the home universe of Earth-247 after its destruction, making her stronger than ever.

Kuiper studied planets… at a time when they were scarcely of interest to other astronomers. But with new telescopes and instrumentation, he showed that there were great things to discover, which is as true today as it was then.

His work laid the foundation for the spacecraft missions of the late 20th and early 21st centuries.

    Krypton +1

For anyone concerned about infringement, it’s KRYPTONITE that is the fictional material from Superman. Krypton still hearkens to the lost planet (in line with the ancient/mythical/fictional sites like Atlantis, Camelot, Eden, etc.), but Krypton is also the name of the ACTUAL element, the noble gas. Much less of a concern for infringement (and more fitting than “Kraken”, imo…).

    I suggest Yin Yang.

Basic Concepts Defining the Nature of Yin Yang
1.Neither Yin nor Yang are absolute. Nothing is completely Yin or completely Yang. Each aspect contains the beginning point for the other aspect. For example: day becomes night and then night becomes day…Yin and Yang are interdependent upon each other so that the definition of one requires the definition for the other to be complete.
2.Yin Yang is not static. The nature of Yin and Yang flows and changes with time. A simple example is thinking about how the day gradually flows into night. However, the length of day and night are changing. As the earth ages, its spin is slowing causing the length of day and night to get longer. Day and night are not static entities.Sometimes changes in the relationship between Yin and Yang can be dramatic where one aspect can literally just transform into the other. As an example: some species of fish have females that transform quickly into males when the population of males aren’t enough.
3.The summation of Yin and Yang form a whole. One effect of this is: as one aspect increases the other decreases to maintain overall balance of the whole.
4.The balance of Yin Yang can be skewed due to outside influences. Four possible imbalances exist: •Deficiency Yang
    •Deficiency Yin
    •Excess Yang
    •Excess Yin

These imbalances can be paired: so an excess of Yin can also simulate a Yang deficiency and vice versa.

As an example this concept is especially important for Chinese healing practices. So an excess of Yang results in a fever. An excess of Yin could mean the accumulation of fluids in the body. Chinese healing examines a person’s health is in terms of the eight principles: Internal and External stimuli, Deficiency and Excesses, Cold and Heat and Yin and Yang.

5.Yin Yang can be subdivided into additional Yin and Yang aspects. For example a Yang aspect of Heat: can be further subdivided into a Yin warm or Yang burning.
6.Additional principles defining Yin and Yang qualities exist. The concepts listed here are merely a starting point to illustrate the nature of Yin and Yang. Usually as a practice Taoism does a good job of not codifying life. Which is ironic since many Taoist’s can happily list out what is Yin and what is Yang. Typically Taoist texts will list a few examples of Yin and Yang and then meander off to the next topic. Which makes sense as from a Taoist perspective it’s for the reader to reveal life from their own perspective. As an example go back to the Taoist passage quoted above from the Tao Te Ching. You will discover a few additional aspects to Yin and Yang, but the passage isn’t a complete definition either. The author of this passage fully expects you as the reader to go out and to explore the ideas on your own.
7.This is only the start. You can dig into Yin Yang in an infinite manner due to its relative nature.

I suggest Krypton, even before reading a single comment I was constantly reading your previous codenames trying to find a pattern. The biggest one that stood out was Gotham, Eden, Isengard, Atlantis…. I immediately noticed a theme locations based on fictional stories. After reading the comments it seems like everyone else came to the same conclusion. So just like Google continues their dessert codenames maybe you should continue with city names.

Although Krypton and Kronos are great names, I think that could potentially leave the xbmc/kodi community in a bit of a legal dilemma. With that being said, I suggest either Keno or Kino or some other variation of spelling, or even Kore.

Another thing to consider is to skip “K” as the it is already used in the software’s title “Kodi.”

Lots of noise around awful names. Names already been used for something or for somebody. Easy way to made a mistake!

There is another “codename”, also well-known, but it never been used:

    knick-knack

Truely defines the purpose of this software, and have a “magical” name at the same time: written with K, but spoken without it!

Full name shoud sound like “Knick-knack Kodi”.

PS. Three (K) in one name, it’s symbolic!

I would recommend Kandor, the capital city of Krypton, to tie in with Batman v. Superman, or Kamino, an ocean planet in the Star Wars universe, to tie in with Star Wars Episode VII. They are both purposefully slightly vague as to their franchise of origin, making them easier to use for copyright reasons.
