XBMC 12.3 – Frodo fixes!

12.3 Frodo

First of all we want to wish happy holidays and a merry Christmas to all our users, developers, contributors and every one else. Thank you all for the support and help and for enjoying our software. Let’s hope the year 2014 will bring all of you health and happiness and of course make XBMC even more great than it already is.

Now for the important news and Christmas surprise. It has been around seven months after the release of XBMC 12.2 and we are happy to announce XBMC 12.3 with fixes for bugs found in the 12.2 release. The list of fixes contain several bug fixes that are back-ported from the ongoing development from our 13.0 Gotham release. The list only contains fixes that are deemed critical and are relatively easy to apply to the Frodo 12.2 release without risking stability regressions. This means we are aware of several shortcomings of Frodo and trying to fix those would be to intrusive or risky to apply. This also means that 12.3 will be the last of the Frodo line and all future, major improvements will only be included in Gotham 13.0

Without further ado here’s the list of fixes included:

  • OSX 10.9 Maverick fixes that appeared when it was release
  • update PVR addons
  • several PVR related bugs
  • memory leaks
  • audio channel mapping
  • possible crash on progress dialog
  • and more

You can read the complete list of fixes here

Dealing with OSX 10.9

As many of you may have experienced, 10.9 has caused a number of issues for our current releases. In addition to forcing us to release a 12.3 version, we’ve learned that 10.9 appears to have reset security settings. Now to install XBMC, you need to right click the application after it’s been installed and select “Open” from the list (this need only be done once).

Alternatively, you can go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> General. From there, unlock the lock at the bottom of the window and “Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere.” This second method is the preferred method, as you will no longer be bothered for future XBMC updates.

Previous releases

As for the previous releases you can find the sum-up below.

Fixes from 12.2 included:

  • Fixed infinite loop on addon dependencies, resolves crashing problem that arrose immediately post 12.1 launch
  • Numerous UPnP fixes
  • Memory leak fixed when XBMC is minimized
  • Various Raspberry Pi playback fixes and software codec support
  • Fixed OSX audio mixing
  • Fixed some audio-related crashes in Linux builds
  • AirPlay fixes
  • Bluray folder resume-bookmarks now work
  • Ability to scan for new content on file folders has been reimplemented
  • Language updates from Transifex

Fixes from 12.1 included:

  • XBMC now supports using OSX’s default output device for audio as well as hardware decoding with Intel GPUs in OSX
  • XBMC no longer hogs audio for Linux and on resume audio will continue to work in Linux
  • Full iPhone 5 resolution is now enabled
  • Volume buttons on Android devices now control Android volume, rather than XBMC volume
  • Volume buttons on OSX devices once again control OSX volume, rather than XBMC volume
  • Player optimization on the Raspberry Pi, including more efficient playback, better subtitle support, and many crash fixes
  • iOS 6 support on the AppleTV 2.
  • XBMC does not crash when listed on the AppleTV top shelf
  • Added support for additional Xbox 360 controller types
  • Broader and more intelligent support for CEC devices
  • Fixed problems with several addons due to broken binary read/write in our python interface
  • Language fixes, including 7 new languages: Albanian, Burmese, Malay, Persian (Iran), Tamil (India), Uzbek, Vietnamese
  • AirPlay fixes, including making discovery of XBMC more reliable on OSX
  • Numerous crashing and stability fixes across all platforms

To update to XBMC 12.3, please visit our download page, which includes downloads for Windows, OSX, and Android, and instructions for Linux, iOS, the Apple TV, and the Raspberry Pi. XBMCbuntu users can see these instructions for upgrading to 12.3 using ppa:team-xbmc/ppa.

If you have any problems read the Frodo FAQ, the Raspberry Pi FAQ, or the Android FAQ, depending on your version.

How To Help

If you would like to help with XBMC, we encourage you to submit bugs in Trac, provide support in our Forums where you can, or donate to the Foundation if you like.

For those of you who are tracking and submitting bugs: You may notice that Github has an “Issues” section. The Team would very much appreciate it if you did not submit bug reports through that section, but rather continued to use the forums and Trac. At the moment, the Team is using Issues as a concise means of grouping and identifying particular bugs that they gather from the forum and Trac sources. Thanks for your help!

Hi, first off, thanks very much for the Christmas surprise :) Second, just a quick minor note–if you click the Apple logo in the Download page, it looks like that still links to 12.2. The text links for the two flavours of OSX both point to 12.3, but the logo itself links to 12.2.

Also…on that subject, would it be possible to simplify the two OSX text links? Some people might not be 100% sure what the difference is between “OSX” and “OSX x86-64″.

Cheers, and happy and safe holidays to the XBMC team!

  • omar Dec 24, 2013

I wish happy holiday to all wonderful team, behind the creation of this excellent amazing media center. People from all over the world really appreciate your hard work. I encourage them to donate generously to the team.

  • Danny Dec 25, 2013

I was happy to see a update thinking that it would fix the stuttering and choppy video play on my Nexus 5 running Kitkat 4.4 but it is still a issue…I can only hope that this gets resolved in Gotham 13.

    • Martijn Dec 25, 2013

For Android KitKat 4.4 users I can only recommend the Gotham nightly versions

      • Danny Dec 26, 2013

Hi i have had no luck with the nightlies for kit kat 4.4..just wondering if you know one that is working?

        • Mike Dec 28, 2013

I’ve been using the Gotham night lies for several weeks on my Nexus 5, and they work beautifully.

    • Kevin Jan 07, 2014

I had the same thing happening too, I went to System-Settings-System-Un-blue or
uncheck “use a fullscreen window rather than true fullscreen. And fixed the video, so that it ran smooth and not dicey or choppy. Hope helps you.

  • Seyko Isakov Dec 25, 2013

    Thank you for the update.
And what about wrong resolution on iPad air (1024×768 instead of Retina resolution)? How do I fix it?

  • Kai Dec 25, 2013

  • Tom1502 Dec 25, 2013

Yay, Great! Any reason, whz the DVBLink Plugin is not coming with 12.3? At least I cannot see it…
Thank you for the great work!

  • istvan varga Dec 25, 2013

” regret, but the Xmas surprise for me was a message “unable to create GUI”" even after I have deleted the old and downloaded the new 12.3 version. I am using W7 and following the download process correctly did not help either!

    • Nathan Betzen Dec 25, 2013

Usually this is a sign of messed up hardware. You might look into updating your drivers. You’ll probably also get the message if using something like VMware or Remote Desktop.

  • Uomiarz Dec 25, 2013

    THX ! Merry Xmass

  • Nathounet Dec 25, 2013

Hello, I tried to dowload XBMC but when i launch it (the allowed apps is on Anywhere) the XBMC icon appear in the dock and disappear immediately..!
I tried the both versions (x86 and x64-x86) it’s the same.

What am I doing wrong ?

    Thank by advance !

    • Nathan Betzen Dec 25, 2013

Have you tried right clicking (or if using a touchpad double-finger clicking) and then selecting Open from the context menu? That might get it going for you.

  • drbouzas Dec 25, 2013

    Bad news…

In the version 12.3 there is a bug in the sound and stability of xbmc.

  • Frans Dec 25, 2013

the good news, it worked fine in OS X 10.9
the bad news, I got sound issue in OS X 10.6

  • Aidan Dec 25, 2013

How do I fix this in the latest version of XBMC for iOS? iPhone 5s on 7.0.4:

  • Zack Dec 25, 2013

Tried to upgrade to 12.2 to 12.3.1 with Cydia and get filesize mismatch error. Had to delete partial download to retry, same issue, tried three times.

Is there any way to install 12.2 from cydia?

    • Zack Dec 25, 2013

Looks like the download stops at 39.6MB. When you try and reinstall, Cydia tries to resume from that point and fails with the size mismatch.

      Completely stuck. Help!

      • Bulent Dec 25, 2013

        Me too :( (

      • Zack Dec 25, 2013

Tried on a different iPad. Removed old 12.2 xbmc through cydia, then started install for 12.3. Exact same issue.

      • Yong Dec 26, 2013

      • Ned Scott Dec 28, 2013

  • vaggii Dec 25, 2013

“Looks like the download stops at 39.6MB. When you try and reinstall, Cydia tries to resume from that point and fails with the size mismatch.

    Any help ?

    • Martijn Dec 25, 2013

      • Zack Dec 25, 2013

        Now working. Many thanks.

  • Just some guy... Dec 25, 2013

Question: Does the DB structure in 12.3 stay the same as 12.2 ?

Why: I do a MySQL shared library from win 7 server, and my two primary systems are on win 7.

And , I have a few of the Pivos Xios Linux boxes, which may lag in update.

I hesitate from doing an update unless I know that the DB’s are the same in 12.2 and 12.3

    • Martijn Dec 26, 2013

      no db changes done

      • Just some guy... Dec 26, 2013

Thanks for the response. Greatly appreciated.

  • Yong Dec 26, 2013

  • Yong Dec 26, 2013

    working now ,thanks

  • eegorr Dec 26, 2013

Year metadata is still incorrectly processed for WMA files in version 12.3. It has been most of a year since I (and others) reported this issue. Maybe this will be fixed in v13?

  • kokhean Dec 26, 2013

When will it get Android 4.4′s immersive mode?

  • dirtyminds Dec 26, 2013

works great on ios 7 it feels that it is working smoother than before
    great work

    keep up the good work

  • Thomas M. Schulz (tms) Dec 26, 2013

Merry Christmas to the team and many thanks for the update. Unfortunately i also run into the problem discussed here:

The “iMon HID device” is listet under Input devices. This problem first shows up with Frodo 12.3. Previous Versions (12.2 and lower) did’nt have it. Besides that XBMC works fine so far, but it’s annoying to get this “New device configured – iMon HID device” Message every time I run XBMC. Greetings from Germany and merry xmas again – tms.

  • Dave Roberts Dec 26, 2013

Thanks for the update, upnp now fixed between my 2 XBMCBuntu boxes on wiredLAN.

  • 655321 Dec 26, 2013

I updated today and now all Videos are stuttering. It seems VAAPI doesn’t work for me, in 12.2 anything worked without problems.

    Athlon II X2 240
AMD 880G Chipset (HD 4250 integrated graphics, Catalyst 13.1)
    Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    Best regards, 655321

    • b79 Dec 26, 2013

after update hd channels stuttering :(

i;m using ubuntu 13.10 intel i3 with intel 4400 HD, on 12.2 everything works fine :/

    • wsnipex Dec 27, 2013

VAAPI on AMD is broken and has never worked properly, And since AMD abandoned legacy hardware in catalyst as well as the OSS radeon, you won’t get any hardware acceleration with your hd 4250 on linux.
I have the same card too, so I know the feeling.

    • eksurf Jan 01, 2014

I just updated to 12.3 and there is endles stuttering. This happens on two different computer running linux that used to play the same videos flawlessly. Any idea whats going on?

  • Cassiel Dec 26, 2013

    DXVA broken on Windows 7 64-bit :( :( :(

  • Jacob Dec 26, 2013

  • Kay Jan 03, 2014

Hi, i had the volume issue where it would become disable when changing tv inputs. I’ve updated from 12.2 to 12.3. Initially I thought it worked. But after 3 hours of watch tv, I switch my input back to xbmc and mu volume is disabled again. Anyone else experiencing this?

  • Mike Linski Jan 03, 2014

I love the great work you do.
It’s amazing how many apps for sale that claim to do this and that then fall short or operating system not compatible.
Why they can’t just have an app that plays all video files like you do.

Even the XBMC for the original XBox does things they say can’t be done.
Why is it that you can and they have just excuses as well as try and make money off incomplete work that falls short.

Other than that, can’t wait for the next version. Frodo 12.3 keeps crashing on my android using cyanogenmod just trying to play simple files. Either way, far better than anything you can find on the market.

    Don’t stop development, please.

  • arquikecto Jan 03, 2014

when i try to put the psw “alpine” it doesn’t work does anybody know why?

  • björn Jan 03, 2014

Well done team, your efforts are highly appreciated!

I would also like to take the opportunity to push for the slingplayer compatibility issues with Slingbox HD Pro. I have understood that we are quite a few that would be very happy to use XBMC as remote live tv viewer.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Kasper Vestergaard Jan 03, 2014

I am still getting an error with addon.py in 12.3 on Mavericks. Also hanging when i try to exit the polite way (xbmc shutdown through interface menu).

  • bat0nas Jan 03, 2014

i just recently updated to frodo 12.3 but i am having problems as to sound. i have 0 sound coming from program itself . i am using xbmc on a macbook pro. any suggestions?

  • eas Jan 05, 2014

“From there, unlock the lock at the bottom of the window and “Allow apps downloaded from: Anywhere.” This second method is the preferred method, as you will no longer be bothered for future XBMC updates.”

No, the preferred method would be for XBMC to release properly signed binaries for OS X, or barring that, for people to just deal with jumping through the extra hoop to run the unsigned binary on the rare occasions when the app whitelist is reset.

Your suggestion makes users who don’t know better more vulnerable to malware, and such users are already more vulnerable to malware.

    • Martijn Jan 05, 2014

Totally false and we will never sign any binary

  • jm Jan 05, 2014

I replace xbmc 12.2 for 12.3 but when the movie is playing if i touch in the screen the xbmc stops.

I am using android with JB tablet

  • Papa Jan 05, 2014

    Subtitels not working.

  • Glen Jan 05, 2014

Hi, I will pay $$$$$$$$. For an in-program airplay button to airplay xbmc videos from my ipad to my appletv 3. NOT MIRROR. Mirroring sucks. Straight up Airplay – like the buttons in many many many many other video programs like YouTube, airvideo, etc. etc. etc…. I am incredibly sure this request has been made on many occasions… So what’s up.. What’s the problem.? Please respond as I have been searching and searching for some fix to this.. And have only ever come across answers that reference crappy mirroring. Thanks in advance.

  • Glen Jan 05, 2014

Not to sound ungrateful I ABSOLUTLY LOVE XBMC. It is a good program.. It could be GREAT with an airplay button though!
Again, thank you very much for a nearly perfect experience!

  • adrian Jan 06, 2014

hello i have a problem.. everytime i try to open XBMC i have to install it all over again. i dont know how to fix it

  • Mike Linski Jan 07, 2014

    After several days of testing.
Constantly crashing on my android tablet. Observation is when it accesses large directories (video type files)

Although I have a 4 core@ 1.5 ghz playing of MKV files is extremely choppy.
This was tested streaming over WIFI and I did not check direct from local storage.

Same files work great streaming to a windows laptop so I would like to rule out the WIFI.

Audio works great however it has to read into library every time I access a directory even if it’s the same directory so I shut that feature off.

Avi files work great but who uses them anymore.

Love your work, can’t wait for v13
